ADK Posted 1 July 2012 Posted 1 July 2012 Dissapointed that Beckham isnt in the squad. Best footballer we've produced in recent times and deserves a place imo.
21st Century Fox Posted 1 July 2012 Posted 1 July 2012 Rumoured to be in the squad; Marvin Sordell, Daniel Sturridge, Josh McEachran, Ryan Bertrand, Tom Cleverly, Joe Allen, Aaron Ramsey, Jason Lowe, Jack Butland, Kieran Gibbs, Steve Caulker, Nathaniel Clyne, Wilfred Zaha. Team GB will also be training at an unnamed Leicestershire health resort, before the friendly with Brazil.
Jaspa Posted 1 July 2012 Posted 1 July 2012 Anyone think Andy King shouldve been given a go ? Some interesting names in there, I hope they do well and develop into something we can utilise in the world of FiFa

Not sure of Caulker's nationality.
21st Century Fox Posted 2 July 2012 Posted 2 July 2012 Am I right in saying there's no Scottish or N Irish players in that squad? Not sure of Caulker's nationality. You are correct. Interesting to see the vein of Swansea players running through the squad.
Tielemans63 Posted 2 July 2012 Posted 2 July 2012 I thought guys like McArthur & Bannan might represent the Scots and maybe McCourt for NI. I take it the SFA and IFA weren't keen in their players being selected?

Not sure why the FAs object so strongly - it doesn't really compromise their autonomy does it? FIFA aren't going to demand we compete as Great Britain from 2012 onwards are they? Seems like pedantry to me.
leicesterisme Posted 2 July 2012 Posted 2 July 2012 Like the look of that squad, nice to see quite a few Swansea players in there.
Leicfox Posted 2 July 2012 Posted 2 July 2012 Pearce said that tokenism never crossed his mind when selecting his squad. He said: "I've got a list of names written down now, who I think ability-wise are good enough to do a job. I didn't pick on personality, I didn't pick on ticket sales and I certainly wasn't picking on nationality. "To be honest I cannot tell you how many players there are from England and Wales. There 18 players are all Olympians now and that's the only way I view them." http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/olympics/no-scottish-or-northern-ireland-players-as-team-gb-football-squad-is-announced-for-the-olympics-7904093.html
Daggers Posted 2 July 2012 Posted 2 July 2012 How long until the name undergoes a cricket-like transformation from GB to England&Wales to simply England?

Apparently it's because they do not want their players involved for fear of risking their countries' separate identities in world football. They could not block players participation if players were selected from their countries though.

Guest MattP Posted 3 July 2012 Posted 3 July 2012 How long until the name undergoes a cricket-like transformation from GB to England&Wales to simply England? Didn't realise the Cricket team was ever referred to as GB. When you see Spain's side will contain Mata, De Gea, Tello, Thiago, Marino and Muniain the rest are in trouble.
