The Doctor Posted 1 July 2011 Posted 1 July 2011 I could understand why administrators of the other FAs were against a joint team, even though there is a less than zero chance that FIFA would reduce it's own income by forcing the home nations into one team. I couldn't understand why the fans wouldn't want their players to cheer on. Reading your post makes me think that some Scots, Welsh , Irish whose only source of footballing pride is seeing England lose would rather not have their players involved so that they can still hope that the GB team lose. not at all, I'd love to see some of my national side at the olympics but realistically that won't happen. The scottish players who are, IMO at least, good enough to play for "Team GB" are Gordon, McGregor, Hutton, Adams & Fleck. Of those Gordon will almost certainly be injured, McGregor & Hutton are over-age and will almost certainly be snubbed despite that Hutton is arguably the best RB any of the home nations have and McGregor is probably the 2nd best keeper available to Team GB after Joe Hart. Adams will also be overage (I think). As for Fleck, he'll be overlooked for the likes of Henderson.
Alexikokopops Posted 2 July 2011 Posted 2 July 2011 Mack has outshone himself again. Every time it's another gem.
General Smuts Posted 5 March 2012 Posted 5 March 2012 Don't understand what everyone's been moaning about with regards to the other 3 nations. If a player wants to play let the bugger play. It's not like England's going to take lives or freedom because of it, so Mel Gibson can chill out. Bert is right though - no one in the England squad for the Euros will be in this squad. Think the squad will look something like the below would appease all the nations: GK: Ben Amos, (Overage GK) DR: Adam Matthews, Lee Hodson DL: Danny Rose, Chris Gunter DC: Jonny Evans, Stephen Caulker, Martin Kelly, Craig Cathcart MR: Alex Oxlade Chamberlain, David Beckham ML: Gareth Bale, James Forrest MC: Aaron Ramsey, Jack Wilshere (if fit), Ross Barkley, Josh McEachran ST: Connor Wickham, Jordan Rhodes, David Goodwillie, (Overage Striker)

Finnegan Posted 5 March 2012 Posted 5 March 2012 Given the lack of England senior players in the squad I'd fancy a cheeky punt on Joe Allen and Adam Matthews making the side (though I doubt the starting eleven) if Bale and Ramsey open the flood gates by accepting. Which they will.
General Smuts Posted 5 March 2012 Posted 5 March 2012 Unless Pearce takes Flanagan and Kelly or picks Hodson ahead of Matthews he surely will go. I can't see Allen getting a look in though unless Wilshere's not fit and Ramsey opts out, Scholes doesn't fancy a swansong or Giggs either or Pearce doesn't opt for Jay Spearing. Basically he's got no shot.
StanSP Posted 5 March 2012 Posted 5 March 2012 Jack Rodwell will be a great midfield addition if he's not picked for the Euros. Would love to see him representing Team GB at the Olympics. Is there a minimum/maximum limit to amount of players from each nation?
BlueSi13 Posted 5 March 2012 Posted 5 March 2012 No. I don't self identify as British and never get behind British teams (perhaps with the exception of the Lions but that's a little different.) Contrary to popular belief, I like the English. You're good people, most of my friends are English and the country is okay. So it isn't about being anti-English or having a chip on my shoulder I just find all the culture and iconography associated with 'Britain' and 'Britishness' to be things I dislike. I have never felt British. But Welsh? Yes. European? Yes. You live on an island thats been called Britannia for over 3000 years, these are the British islands, if Wales were to break away from the political union that is the UK, you will still be British, just not by passport.

If you're going to start arguing pedantic semantics then I'm a Brython. Oh, and we called it Albion / Alban. Of course you could accept that the point I was making was a cultural and political one and not one of geographical or historical specifics, but there you go.

No arguing from me brah, im just saddened that the peoples of this island have to pretend that there are some sort of distinct cultural and historical differences between each other that cause us to be divided when in fact that we as a people, thanks to thousands of years of blood mixing are identical in almost every way. If we were from a country that had achieved a whole amount of **** all then i'd understand this, but as we are from one of the worlds great nations i simply cannot.
Darkon84 Posted 6 March 2012 Posted 6 March 2012 If people are talking about Joe Allen etc, then why not Steven Davis of Northern Ireland?
General Smuts Posted 6 March 2012 Posted 6 March 2012 If people are talking about Joe Allen etc, then why not Steven Davis of Northern Ireland? Cos he's over 23 isn't he? Shocking that I forgot Rodwell.
StanSP Posted 6 March 2012 Posted 6 March 2012 Shocking that I forgot Rodwell. Who would you replace him with? I'd swap Cathcart (if you're gonna use Rodwell as DC) or Barkley (as MC). Rodwell's better as a defensive midfielder, but can also play reasonably well at centre-back. Central midfield options of Ramsey, McEachran, Wilshere and Rodwell does look pretty good!
RonnieTodger Posted 6 March 2012 Posted 6 March 2012 I think it will be a team comprised of the players that didn't make the England squad for Euro 2012, then at least 1 Northern Irish, Scottish and Welsh player. Ramsey, Bale and Rodwell have already modelled the kit so I'd expect to see them 3 in there. And hopefully Beckham as one of the overage players. I'd imagine the Northern Irish player would be Jonny Evans. If he's not young enough, then probably Steven Davies. I'm looking forward to it, and am sick of all this shite about FIFA deciding to scrap the home nations and make a Team GB permanently.
Darkon84 Posted 6 March 2012 Posted 6 March 2012 Cos he's over 23 isn't he? Shocking that I forgot Rodwell. Id take Davis ahead of Beckham
PAULCFC Posted 6 March 2012 Posted 6 March 2012 Just as a side note to this,Does anyone know when we get to know which teams play at which grounds.Going to the rickity for all the games.
StanSP Posted 6 March 2012 Posted 6 March 2012 Just as a side note to this,Does anyone know when we get to know which teams play at which grounds.Going to the rickity for all the games. There's venues listed for each date on the following link; not sure about opposition. That's decided later on in the year . http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/olympics/15674327
MrSpaM Posted 11 May 2012 Posted 11 May 2012 I couldnt find any other threads about this, so i just wanted to know if any of our players have been shortlisted for the team GB side for the olympics this year. They've got some forest, birmingham and palace players in there so I would have thought we'd have some players in contention? Cant seem to find an actual list anywhere though.
Jace Posted 11 May 2012 Posted 11 May 2012 The GB team wanted Konchesky but apparently Hodgeson wants him for the Euros instead
Super_horns Posted 28 June 2012 Posted 28 June 2012 Looks like despite all the hype Beckham won't be picked as one of the 3 over 23. its Bellamy,Giggs and Richards (if he decides to play I presume)
Soar Fox Posted 28 June 2012 Posted 28 June 2012 Dissapointed Beckham won't be in the squad. Richards shouldn't be in the squad as he should have been in the Euro squad anyway.
Leicesterpool Posted 28 June 2012 Posted 28 June 2012 I'm sorry but I think it's an utter disgrace that Beckham isn't in the team, he's probably one of the few people who are proud to play for their country. Hope there's a players revolt "if David isn't in the team, then we don't play"
Tielemans63 Posted 28 June 2012 Posted 28 June 2012 Confirmed now: http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11095/7846753/Beckham-left-out-of-Team-GB The other over 23 place goes to Micah Richards. Ryan Giggs and Craig Bellend are the other two over-age players.
