  1. 1. Should City bid for Shane Long?

    • Yes but no more than £6m
    • Yes but no more than £4m
    • Yes cash and player exchange
    • Only if we fail to land Nicky Maynard
    • Only if another Championship side makes a bid
    • No not a chance

C'est vraiment très intéressant.....

Edit: Though he is 32 in September and has a dodgy back - Well, he did at Stoke last season........

il est tres parresseux.

wouldnt want him here to be honest, would rather us stick with some of the other targets

Enough with the he's not worth £?m in every thread. If that's your pathetic attitude then we'll buy no-one. A player is worth whatever you can get for him at a particular time. Pay or don't have.

I'm sure all those complaining that we shouldn't pay £8m for long and we shouldn't pay £5m for Maynard and we shouldn't pay £1m for Evans will complain even more if we don't buy a striker.

Agree with this.

I always consider transfer fees while they are in contract must be more than the players worth... it has to be a significant amount to lure the player away and to tempt the other club to sell.

i.e. the ridiculous amount Real Madrid paid for Ronaldo.. yes he is an amazing player and I cannot argue with his record, but a lot of money needs to be considered to sell your best asset.

Basically what I'm saying is I don't blame teams for over pricing their star players.. just the same as we wouldn't want to lose ours and a very special bid would have to come along to think about it.

What a shock :o

Leicester City are the latest club to have shown an interest in Reading striker Shane Long.

Last season's 25-goal hero is the hottest prospect in the Championship and is rated at £8million by Royals.

Sven-Goran Eriksson has already poached Matt Mills for an initial £4.5million from Madejski Stadium and the big-spending Foxes look intent on flexing their financial muscle again.

Eriksson has been working hard on a deal for Bristol City forward Nicky Maynard, but it is un-derstood they are losing patience with officials at Ashton Gate - and are now ready to turn to Long.

Although Reading manager Brian McDermott told the Reading Post his 24-year-old star would not be sold to a league rival, City are even rivalling Premier League sides in their player recruit-ment this summer.

Long is out of contract in 12-months time, but it looks like Royals will play a waiting game and drive a hard bargain for their prized asset.

Saw Carew a few times at Stoke last year, not impressed.

He's slowed a lot over the last year (was never quick), work rate pretty poor, and mental wages. Wouldn't want him here.

Leicester City are considering a move for Reading's sought-after striker Shane Long as manager Sven-Goran Eriksson looks to bolster his attack.

Eriksson is looking for a proven striker to spearhead his attack and Long has emerged as a potential record-breaking transfer target.

City have already had three offers for Bristol City's Nicky Maynard rejected, but he remains under consideration, along with Tottenham striker Robbie Keane, who seems certain to leave White Hart Lane this summer.

City were also linked with Middlesbrough striker Leroy Lita yesterday and were reportedly offering him £15,000 a week in an attempt to hijack his move to Swansea City.

But the Premier League side announced yesterday they had agreed terms with Lita.

However, Long is seen as the man who can score the goals that will fire City into the Premier League. He scored 25 goals in 50 appearances for Reading last season, 23 in the league, but City's Thai owners will have to smash the club transfer record and beat off rivalry from West Brom and West Ham to land the 24-year-old Republic of Ireland international.

Reading are resigned to losing their star striker, who is out of contract next summer, and are believed to looking for a fee of at least £7million for Long.

Reading have confirmed they have received two bids for him, one of which is believed to be from West Brom, but is said to have been well below the Royals' valuation, as little as £3m.

City have already raided the Royals for their captain Matt Mills earlier this summer, and could now return for their star striker.

Meanwhile, City are believed to be taking a look at former Liverpool midfielder Damien Plessis.

Sources in Greece say the 23-year-old is heading to Leicester from Panathinaikos for a trial after being told he can leave the Greek club.

Plessis played only eight games in three years for the Reds but was tipped to be a top prospect before he joined Panathinaikos a year ago for an undisclosed fee.

However, the France Under-21 international has been told he can find a new club.

City have also been linked with Tottenham winger Andros Townsend.

The 20-year-old is available on loan after spells with Ipswich, Watford and Millwall last season

There are several ways to look at our spending. If these players get us promoted then they have not only paid for themselves, but are hopefully good enough to form part of the prem squad. Also, if you sign them on 5 year deals and believe they can play in the prem, then their is no difference between signing them now for 8m or next year for 8m. The owners are intending to be in the Prem, and see no reason not to spend on that basis.

Even on 3 year deals they are able to recuperate money at the end of this season if you want.

It's also important for people to realise that we are likely to lose some games too along the way.

Expectation is running very high at the moment and it will be interesting to see how some of our fans respond when we do lose.

Roll on the new season!

Yes please, I would love Shane Long here, the Maynard saga has raged on long enough, we're going to have to pay over the odds for players as other clubs think the owners have bottomless pockets but I don't care if it gets us up, I just want to see some good football and City back where we belong!

A question for everyone which two out of the three would you prefer out of Keane, Long, Carew

Longs in there and tbh I'm not sure on who the other would be... probably would say Carew.

Come on people, £8mill?! I do not want the club spending that amount of money on a Championship player.

He would be worth it if he got us promoted and did a decent job in the prem.
