Convince Me!

I've been going down the City for every home game and plenty of aways since the early 60's with just a short break when my kids were very young. I've had a ST for the last 25 or so years only missing the odd game through illness.

Over the last 10 years every year I've agonised over whether to keep on going and spending an ever increasing amount of my income on renewing. I know that if I don't get ST I can't afford or justify the over priced match tickets.

The club has stumbled from one season to the next through a seemingly incompetent bunch of owners and a stream of bungling ineffective managers. This has led to ever season seeing a big turnaround in players, there's hardly a player I think of as being a Leicester City Player and no doubt we'll see another merry go round this summer.

I struggle to feel any affinity to the club or the players and it's like I'm just just going through the motions, oh it's Saturday already that means it's football.

Coupled with this we have the oppressive treatment of fans from were I was watching there were 9 stewards and 8 police officers. I counted at least 140 police officers at the Peterboro match and yet not a single one did anything to ease the pedestrian crossing of roads or the flow of traffic away from the ground.

It's not even about winning or not winning, I personally am not fussed as to whether we get promoted or not of course I'd be pleased but it's more to do with being entertained, being part of the club, feeling that everyone at the club including the fans are all pulling in the same direction, feeling that there is a common purpose, feeling part of it, feeling that by my attendance I'm contributing to both the short and long term prosperity of the club, having players I get to know a little. It can feel like you're watching someone else's team sometimes.

I look towards next season and I just see the same scenario repeating itself, there's already plenty of fans calling for a change in manager, for players to leave and a whole list of players to get in how does one maintain or build any rapport with what is happening on the pitch?

So can anyone convince me that I should give it one more go and risk another season?

Sorry for the ramble but it is Monday morning. :P

Nope, can't do it, I have nothing but respect for the people who shell out large amounts of hard earned cash to follow a football club, but I honestly think football fans all over the country should say enough is enough, this is not to do with Leicester, but what football is turning into, the obscene wages and yet the constant dismissal of fans and what they stand for. Prices are exhorbatant and people are getting priced out in favour of football tourists, yet we still lap it all up, paying what we can for overpriced crap, to get a players name put on our backs only for them to fvck off to another club for more money, or turn out to be lying, cheating, unpleasant racist human beings. Football is fast becoming a grotesque caricature of a fair sportng contest, just look at Newcastle Liverpool yesterday, or the elite academy crap, and the number of clubs going in to administration. I think the fans as a whole should stand up and walk away until it sorts itself out because at the moment it is a mess.

On a personal note, you don't need a season ticket at Leicester we never sell out, so it's not like you will miss any games you want to watch, and it gives you the freedom to pick and choose rather than have your weekends dictated by the whims of Sky TV.

Also do it for the good of the club, you know that the first season in 25 years you don't have a season ticket will be a good one, it's sod's law.

If you don't get one, you know you will put on the radio to listen to the city games instead. And that means listening to Stringer and co desribe what hat someone is wearing in more detail than they do the football. That's enough reason on its own. ;)

Morning Davie,

I had a similar 'crisis' a few months back, around the end of january.

To sum it all up I adopted the attitude 'That if they (the team) couldn't be arsed to put in the effort playing, I couldn't be arsed to put in the effort going to watch'.

I live in London and do not have a ST, so for me the decision was easy, I just stopped going and have not really regretted it.

As you say it is not the results that matter, I have supported through times when we had no money, shit teams and poor seasons but that was, somehow, ok, because it appeared that the team, the club, were actually trying their best.

That feeling has totally disappeared this season and with it any reason for supporting a club that is not going to have a chance at some sort of trophy. It is going to take quite a lot to get me going next season but that said who knows where we will be come august.

Regarding your points about policing and the like when travelling away, I (used to) get to quite a few away games and with a London address I stayed well away from our travelling support. I travelled independently, used to find somewhere nice for a pie and a pint then walked to the ground like a normal human being, no hassle. Generally a much nicer experience than being herded around like cattle.

No I can't - because of the other paragraph I quoted.

It's not the same at all any longer, it is like watching someone else's team - and that someone else is an ignorant pinhead who sits nearby screaming abuse at the players then cheering them then booing before phoning RL.

The future is Non-league football, it reminds me of what watching a game used to feel like many, many years ago...although I do miss meeting good friends in the pub before City games. I miss that a lot.

Oh Daggers, that bit is just so true, although you forget then coming on here and mashing their fists on the keyboard and spraying the screen in spittle. Although last lower league match I saw was Shrewsbury AFC Wimbledon, I really hope that wasn't the future because it was pretty dire.

It sounds like it's time to have a break from the ST. Use your money to pick and choose games you want to watch when it suits you. Watch the others on the net, well over half have been on the net this season and the way football is going you'll soon be able to ppv for matches on the net so you can watch the whole season from home if you wish.

That has been a real highlight of the season, the atmosphere, it would be a shame if that got dragged down by the performances on the pitch.

I only go to a handful of games each season. I don't own a car, so going to a match is easily £20 for a train fare (booked weeks in advance) plus a 9am start and 10pm finish, and the cost of the match ticket in itself. Not owning a ST means I can pick and choose the games I want - e.g. Hull as my mum supports them and I can take her with me.

It sounds as though you've made your mind up already and just need some positive reinforcement. Why not wait until the second half of the season? If we're consistently in the playoffs you can always get half a ST.

sounds to me like you want to ditch the season ticket, however when we make the play-off final or similar next season, don't complain if you don't get a ticket.

that should win you round. I have never missed a wembley game and I'm not sure I could live with the thought of not seeing them should we go there again.

I've been going down since I was 17 in 1990. I've had a season ticket for most of those seasons except for a gap three years where I found myself living away from Leicester and too broke to go down regularly.

During that period I expected I would follow the results pretty closely. The truth is I didn't. Life got in the way and I got to the point where I was only vaguely aware of where City were in the table and not knowing when the next game was. This was pretty unthinkable before my gap or after. After a while, I even managed to convince myself I wasn't that interested anymore.

I didn't exactly miss the football but there was a barely perceptible hole which occasionally ached. Then, I had a bit more money and life wasn't getting in the way so much. I decided to pick and choose my games.

The first game I went to see was a boring 1-1 draw with Stoke. Levein was manager and everyone around me was pretty fed up. But not me. It was like meeting your first love again! I came away from this dull game besotted. But there was so much I had missed. I did not know who the players were and I didn't really understand for a while the desperate situation the club was in post administration.

I'm not sure which side of the argument I am supporting. Do you have a break and love again or see through the rocky period? It's for you to decide.

But...now I have a season ticket again, I know the intimate details of the club and it sometimes gives me moments of great pleasure, although admittedly not as often as when it was new.

You could say we are going steady again.

I had a season ticket from when I was 17 through to 30, I haven't had one for 6 years and don't really regret it, the switching of matches due to tv and the hassle involved in midweek matches was more hassle than I got out of the experience, picking & choosing games has been better for me personally

Yes, it's like watching someone else's team

Going back to the Martin Allen fiasco of all those signings, followed by the managerial changes and then the clown Holloway along with loads more of his signings I've felt nothing to attach to, the season in lg1 was the best since our administration which brought everyone together as the fans felt invested in the players.

I enjoyed lg1 not because we generally won, but because I felt we were building something, we had a manager who made astute signings and our turnaround was measured, people forget that many relegated clubs can take years to get back up from the third tier, but that achievement is brushed off by the majority and is just put down to being expected. That measured & astute approach continued to the following season. The way Pearson was undermined and had no choice but to leave I felt a bit of the club died & then when we got back into the silly circus again, which has seen us become a national joke... but all the more unbelievably if some fans are to be listened to they want even that to start all over again.

Football has changed, fans have changed, it's been going on for years around the country... but the new owners have accelerated the change here & I don't like the deluded, entitled, whiny bunch we've picked-up/become.

Saturday afternoon Shepshed anyone?

First season I've not been to a home game since 1994. The whole club is fvcking boll0x. Until I see the changes i think it needs I'm ****ing done with giving them my money. I have even turned down free tickets this season. I think i have probably seen most games this season watching via streams, and yes I will listen to the radio from time to time too but not every game. In my opinion I think the board sucks, the palyers suck, Nigel has sucked to some degree, the stadium sucks, the kit sucks, and our fans fvcking suck. We deserve to be where we are. Rubbish.

I'm a lot younger than you (no offence :P) and I've sat through some absolute rubbish, several relegations and just plain mediocrity with nothing to get excited about, along with the much better times when we overachieved and took on the best, winning on occasions.

However, this season has been the flattest, for me. All the hype and expectation, all the hope for a great time, gone within a few games pretty much and never recovered. If it hadn't have been for the cup run this season would have even less to remember it by.

It's up to you. I wouldn't stop going altogether, but maybe become a member and go to the games you wish rather than commit to a ST and regret it early on.

Save your money Davie. Most home games are streamed on the internet. Put the money you save towards a nice Saga holiday with Mrs Davie G. Will be far more enjoyable in the long run.

I haven't gone regularly for years now. PAP!!!
