Kitchandro Posted 4 April 2013 Posted 4 April 2013 Grand National meeting: Horse dies after Aintree collapse The Fox Hunters' Chase, the big race for amateur jockeys on the opening day of the Aintree Festival, was overshadowed by the death of Katie Walsh's mount Battlefront. The 11-year-old, trained by Walsh's father Ted and owned by her mother Helen, collapsed and died after being pulled up at the 11th fence. http://www.bbc.co.uk...racing/22032810 Shouldn't really be posted in this thread. Would be more suited to the Grand National one.
theessexfox Posted 4 April 2013 Posted 4 April 2013 Just read this thread, one point that the 'Pro Horse-Racing' camp are missing is that when they say that these horses choose to race, and you wouldn't get a random horse jumping over fences, however this is surely just because that is what they're trained to do?

It's in their nature. Whether it's wild horses or race horses, they like running in packs. They are trained to jump, but they are not trained without a rider I shouldn't think.

They are trained to jump, but they are not trained without a rider I shouldn't think. Many people in this thread have said that you wouldn't be getting an ordinary horse to jump over fences. They use this to back up the argument 'They're not being forced, you couldn't force most horses', but this backs up my argument 'They jump over fences because they are trained from birth'.

ozleicester Posted 5 April 2013 Posted 5 April 2013 But there hasn't been a single post since then either. Bandwagon. Wait... so you want me to talk about animal rights and cruelty MORE? How many horses competed in race during that time? 80 deaths will be a very small percentage Oh...oh well thats ok then... if only a few animals die for our entertainment thats perfectly fine How many fish have died since then? In organised for our entertainment fish races... i would suggest none.... your point is?
Kitchandro Posted 5 April 2013 Posted 5 April 2013 Many people in this thread have said that you wouldn't be getting an ordinary horse to jump over fences. They use this to back up the argument 'They're not being forced, you couldn't force most horses', but this backs up my argument 'They jump over fences because they are trained from birth'. They aren't trained from birth, they're trained from when they're about 3 or 4. If you put any kind of obstacle (within reason) in front of a horse they'll jump it. The training is to make them better at it, to do it with better rhythm. Wait... so you want me to talk about animal rights and cruelty MORE? Oh...oh well thats ok then... if only a few animals die for our entertainment thats perfectly fine In organised for our entertainment fish races... i would suggest none.... your point is? You keep saying this - you realise the entertainment is seeing them race, not seeing them die?
Ant out of Ant'n'Dec Posted 5 April 2013 Posted 5 April 2013 Essex Fox - so a horse in a field will never jump over a fence and be killed by say traffic? Or falling awkwardly in a large ditch? I think you know the answer so maybe best to pretend you never saw this. Wae'aye man!
AdamN Posted 5 April 2013 Posted 5 April 2013 Oh...oh well thats ok then... if only a few animals die for our entertainment thats perfectly fine These horses are bred to race. Yes, 80 racehorses might have died in that time period, but that's also 80 horses that would have never even existed if it weren't for racing. I doubt you agree, but as long as the horse has lived a happy life, then I can't get upset over the death of one (or 80 for that matter). In most cases, death is the most humane option.
Manwell Pablo Posted 5 April 2013 Posted 5 April 2013 You can tell the Animal rights thread has been closed. I would actually agree with him on this subject, but as it's Oz world and I eat meat I'm not allowed an anti horse racing opinion so I have no option but to vote no. EDIT: apologies it's not been closed, just no one cares anymore, my mistake!
Uncle Phil Posted 5 April 2013 Posted 5 April 2013 http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/horse-racing/22045330 Another one bites the dust.
ScouseFox Posted 5 April 2013 Posted 5 April 2013 Why do people (Oz) kick up more of a fuss about horses dying than the fact a jockey was left paralysed after Cheltenham?
marbelladave Posted 5 April 2013 Posted 5 April 2013 Why do people (Oz) kick up more of a fuss about horses dying than the fact a jockey was left paralysed after Cheltenham? The jockey had a choice........ Horse racing means that there are more horses in the world, a good thing in my view......
Bert Posted 5 April 2013 Posted 5 April 2013 The jockey had a choice........ Horse racing means that there are more horses in the world, a good thing in my view...... If the horse doesn't want to run it won't, point proven by mad moose in the 3:05 today and the last time it was supposed to race. Planted both times.
leicesterisme Posted 5 April 2013 Posted 5 April 2013 Horses are not forced, just look at Mad Moose today. If a horse doesn't want to race it will not race.
ScouseFox Posted 5 April 2013 Posted 5 April 2013 Yeah, a horse has a choice too. It's trained and knows to race, but if it doesn't want to leave the stalls, or doesn't want to jump a fence it will refuse to do so.
ADK Posted 5 April 2013 Posted 5 April 2013 Horse racing should be banned for being a shit sport along with basketball.
Kitchandro Posted 5 April 2013 Posted 5 April 2013 Horse racing should be banned for being a shit sport along with basketball. In that case I hope they get rid of cricket too.
iamafox Posted 5 April 2013 Posted 5 April 2013 Yes horse racing should be banned because the horses are being unfairly manipulated to race against each other and win people money, just like some of the greyhounds out there. They should have the freedom to live peacefully and not have their lives endangered by competing in a reckless sport.
