Eddie Big Balls Posted 5 March 2013 Posted 5 March 2013 Well if you're interpreting it literally, a set of studs to the upper ribs could certainly be considered excessive... As I have said I think it was a poor decision but I can at least see the reasoning behind it. I cannot at all see the reasoning behind the non-red card for Varane in the first leg, that ref just totally bottled it in front of the home crowd... Shame we didn't get a ref like that too
potter3 Posted 5 March 2013 Posted 5 March 2013 You can see why the ref gave the red, especially watching it in real time, but it's very harsh. Nine times out of ten that's a yellow. The worst thing about the decision was that it imbalanced a very interesting match.

Shame we didn't get a ref like that too The position of contact on the body is completely irrelevant to how forceful it is. Nani's tackle wasn't in a stamping action, his foot was dangling. There is no way it was excessive force I was desperate for Madrid to give Ubited a pasting but that wasn't right.
Samilktray Posted 5 March 2013 Posted 5 March 2013 I'm sure the imminent arrival of Schlupp will cheer up United fans everywhere after tonight.
Eddie Big Balls Posted 5 March 2013 Posted 5 March 2013 I'm sure the imminent arrival of Schlupp will cheer up United fans everywhere after tonight. I did actually lol
Haydos Posted 5 March 2013 Posted 5 March 2013 By the book it's a red card. Fair play to the ref. It shouldn't be though, they need to be able to use discretion and be humans not robots. It SHOULD be a yellow in my opinion. No intent, not reckless, no thought other than trying to control the ball, it was an accident.
AKCJ Posted 5 March 2013 Posted 5 March 2013 What about the 2nd best player in the world? He's in the better form at the moment, no doubt. But he's not as good as Messi.
Eddie Big Balls Posted 5 March 2013 Posted 5 March 2013 It turns out that this ref has a Twitter and is following 30 people, 2 of whom are Ronaldo and Real Madrid
SystonFox Posted 5 March 2013 Posted 5 March 2013 The red card was similar to those given to Carlton Cole and Darron Gibson in a West Ham v Everton game earlier in the season. Both were rescinded. So you think Uefa will rescind this red and let Nani play the rest of the match after all? You mad bro?
Jimothy Posted 5 March 2013 Posted 5 March 2013 So you think Uefa will rescind this red and let Nani play the rest of the match after all? You mad bro? Not sure if you're taking the piss or are actually serious? I'm obviously not saying that, just pointing out that two players where sent off for similar fouls earlier this season, and both were rescinded so bans in future games didn't occur. So I'm saying I don't think it's a red card, others who have been punished for similar have had their punishment stopped. I fully expect Nani to be available for Man Utd's next European game (if he's still at the club)
SystonFox Posted 5 March 2013 Posted 5 March 2013 I was taking the Michael fella. Seems an odd angle you're coming from that's all. In the grand scheme of things Nani being available for Yaniteds next European game are the least of most Man Ure fans. God I'm so glad they're out. Plastic wankers
acooling08 Posted 5 March 2013 Posted 5 March 2013 To be fair that's probably a red card in most countries, where football is a non-contact sport.
Uncle Albert Posted 5 March 2013 Posted 5 March 2013 Funny when United fans banging on via Twitter forget things like this. It's a harsh Red card but like Haydos said letter of the law he has got it right. Was shocked Ferguson didn't change it round as soon as Nani went, should of gone more defensive.

Plastic wankers I see what you mean, the fact they were rescinded doesn't really help Man Utd now. Really I'm just saying it wasn't a red to all those who claim it was if you're comparing it to fouls proven not to be reds earlier in the season.
Super_horns Posted 6 March 2013 Posted 6 March 2013 Maybe it was harsh but the reaction was sadly chidlish and predictable...
Fox in the North Posted 6 March 2013 Posted 6 March 2013 For me after just seeing the replay, it seems that he made a mistake, but putting your boot that high is asking for trouble. I'm not saying it was a red, but he certainly did himself no favours. Yes arbeloa rolled around but that was going to always be the case.
Eddie Big Balls Posted 6 March 2013 Posted 6 March 2013 I think the biggest indictment is that even the Real players seemed pretty surprised at the red. If their own team isn't outraged about their player then the likelihood is that it's not an outrageous challenge. I WAS gonna post a pic of Ozil looking at the ref in surprise at the red, but that ****er always look surprised anyway
Jaspa Posted 6 March 2013 Posted 6 March 2013 First impression of it was no foul, player had his eyes on the ball and put his foot up to contest the ball, but after seeing it several more times Nani clearly puts some force into the players ribs whilst looking at the player, a very stupid split-second reaction from him and its a borderline red card the inclination of the Ref comes into it and from how the game was and the qualitity in the tie beein showcased I understand it being red. The only thing Im left wondering was if the ref now gets words from an official infront of a screen reviewing events because the events afterwards made it look so

As I've illustrated above, according to the letter of the law it's still incredibly harsh. You're right about Ferguson though. The game was won and lost then. Mourinho changed things around immediately, Ferguson didn't. The same thing happened 3 years ago when Rafael was sent off against Bayern.
AyewJoking Posted 6 March 2013 Posted 6 March 2013 I've never seen a more deserving red......................................than Fergies face last night.
Jimothy Posted 6 March 2013 Posted 6 March 2013 As mush as I've said I don't think it was a red and I've seen similar ones rescinded, Jesus Man Utd are ****ing melodramatic! Fergie virtually having a heart attack on the touchline. Phelan being sent out for the press conference calling it an "amazing decision" (it wasn't, I don't think it's a red, but I can see why with one look the referee might give it) and only Phelan being there because Fergie couldn't face the media. Players crowding the referee after the red card, Rio clapping his hands in the referees face, which in my opinion should have been another red. Can't they just lose with some dignity, even if they do feel a bit harshly treated!
purpleronnie Posted 6 March 2013 Posted 6 March 2013 They should have been as concerned about their team folding immediately after the red.
foxfanazer Posted 6 March 2013 Posted 6 March 2013 It should've been a yellow but it was kind of nice to see a big decision go AGAINST united at old Trafford for once
howlinmadmurfdoc Posted 6 March 2013 Posted 6 March 2013 I don't see how losing a largely ineffective show pony winger would cause you to lose a game, typical united looking for any excuse, fact is they didn't score enough goals,
Guest shearfox Posted 6 March 2013 Posted 6 March 2013 I don't see how losing a largely ineffective show pony winger would cause you to lose a game, typical united looking for any excuse, fact is they didn't score enough goals, They had one less player...
