Sensational last round from Smith. Had Rory not been so conservative it could’ve been a different story!

A putting masterclass from Cam, proving yet again why he’s one of the best putters on tour.

Players Champion, now Open Champion, kind of makes up for making a mess in the final round at The Masters.

This was on Sky too.

Henrik Stenson to join Liv golf and be stripped of his captain role for the Ryder Cup.

Also big rumours that Adam Scott going too. That's no problem to me, it will save having to constantly check if he is anchoring his long putter.

Apparently Cam Smith would not confirm that he is not joining.

Just seen the vid of that, he gave a similar answer the other month of “I leave that stuff to my team”.

Sounds a bit dodgy in all fairness, if some of his Aussie mates join, you wouldn’t be surprised if he follows.

Matsuyama another big name rumoured as well.

What a round of golf under that pressure. The Aussies are just wired up different aren’t they. Class.

Played my first 18 holes since pre-Covid yesterday. I knew I was going to be a tad rusty, but that would end up being a severe understatement.

Luckily the 3 lads I was playing with weren't much better lol

Any advice would be welcome people,

Been playing about four years and got fitted for my new mizunos late last year. Now I want to change my very old hippo driver but unsure what I am looking at.

I know my swing is not totally consistent and I straight fade 7/10 of my tee offs. Are there any drivers that are genuinely engineered to compensate for this?

Ive tried various stances and swing approaches to no avail.

Any advice would be welcome and appreciated

 Budget is £250-350

Taylormade drivers have adjustable weights in the head to encourage a draw.

Whilst the brand new Stealth driver is about £400, there are plenty of their older range out there for around £250-£280. I think it's the Sim or Sim max you'd be looking at

Plenty of golf stores will still have them in stock too for you to try out.

I've got an older version, the SLDR, which has definitely helped me cut down on my slice, looking to upgrade to the Stealth in the next few months.

Everything I've read says the Big Bertha B21 is the best driver for forgiveness and helping straighten out drives. Ultimately though you are only talking a few hundreds of rpm of sidespin reduction, not thousands. A club won't fix the slice, only lessons will.

All of the big brands pretty much offer “anti slice” (whether they work or not, different conversation) drivers nowadays. For your budget, I’d just go and get fitted and see what you come out with, as you’ll probably have enough there to buy off the shelf (maybe not 2022 models, but you should be able to get some 2020/1 specs id imagine). The fitting is sometimes free, or they’ll knock the price of the fitting off if you buy from them afterwards. Good luck!

@The Bear @tom27111 @stretch1965

I was loving this forum until an indescretion! anyways, back to the topic at hand.

@stretch1965 basically a "draw" driver wont create a draw for you. To create a draw, you would need to have your swing path going the opposite way across the ball to what it does now, as the ball will start where the face is pointing, and curve away from your swing path.

Bear this in mind for the next point ill make.

What the draw driver will do is create a face angle thats a bit more closed, and also be more forgiving on shots you hit from the heel of the club. Heel strikes tend to be very spinny and cutty due to the gear effect of the club, so it mitigates the effect of the bad strike.

So the draw driver will reduce your slice/fade a little (theoretically) by having a more closed face angle. So whilst you might not ACTUALLY reduce the amount of curvature on the shot.....the shot will start a bit further left, and have more chance of being in play.

HOWEVER (the dangerous bit)

The ball starts where the face is pointing and curves away from the path as said.

If you have a driver that starts the ball MORE to the left, you may end up building compensations into your swing where you swing EVEN MORE to the left, which could result in a more cutty ball.....the exact opposite of what you dont want!

The best thing to do is get professionally fitted for a driver model where all aspects of your swing are monitored.

For example, what might actually be better for you might be a heavier shaft for example, which might encourage you to swing more from the inside, for a straighter swing path.

I would say if youre looking for absolute forgiveness out of your club, the best brand to go for would be PING with the straight flight technology, very hard to hit those with a bad left to right shape. You might also find however that the head weights of the ping drivers might be quite a bit heavier than youre used to with your Hippo, so the club at least in the short term might feel quite different.

The only issue i have with Taylormade is, they bring out so much gear that if you buy one of their clubs, theyre trying to flog you a new one again within 6-12 months. Not really necessary.

Let us know how you get on!

I also struggle like hell with my driver to hit it straight.

Yet I absolutely love my 3W and struggle to hit that anything other than straight. It's a Mizuno ST200X with a 39g regular shaft in it. I played yesterday and only missed one fairway with it!

I tried choking way down on the driver to simulate a shorter shaft and that helped a lot for the brief few shots I hit like that, so I think I'm gonna get it cut down from 45.75 inches (way too long for a short-arse hacker like me), to 44 inches.

Very common issue that one.

Without getting all technical you most likely hit your 3 wood straight because your angle of attack is more level.

Drivers tend to be pegged up high, and to get the "most" out of the driver swinging up on the ball. Problem is when you swing up, youre also swinging to the left all things being equal. So if you stand absolutely laserbeam square at the target, but hit up on the ball say 3 degrees, youre actually ALSO swinging to the left, because the club has gone past the low point of the swing. Its a phenomenon called "D-Plane" (scary aint it).

Shorter driver shafts are definitely a good option. Playing a longer driver shaft might give you a couple of mph of swing speed but all bets are off if you are missing the middle of the face. Far better to have a more consistent impact position.

The professional game is a complete mess at the minute. Can't imagine any of this will do any of the competitions good.
