Well I don't want to overdo it...

But the next major the USPGA is at Quail Hollow, Rory's first win and then The Open is at Portrush. I've not come up with anything Rory related for Oakmont but Rory slam anyone?

Last night was pure theatre, imagine if it opens the floodgates!

Yes, they wanted to see history and Rory is hugely popular over there.

But I still maintain they'd have been equally (if not more) pumped for Bryson if he'd have played half decent and whipped them up into a frenzy.

They majority of the Patrons are American after all and it makes sense they'd want 'one of their own' to win.

To say nothing of the viewpoint that, over the last few months, the US has done pretty much everything it can to earn the rather parochial reputation it has among a fair few observers.

But that's a discussion more for elsewhere.

Ryder Cup is a different animal, that's self-evident.

There's absolutely no way a Masters crowd was going to get behind BdC against Rory today. None. It's a fantasy. On top of everything else these people are very aware of his LIV situation, and his antics may play in Phoenix but not at Augusta.

Did you see the crowd on 18 when Bryson holed that birdie on Saturday? They went absolutely nuts for him. He would definitely have still been a hugely popular winner with the patrons.

Anyway, who cares. Rory won, Bryson lost, and that's all that matters.

I think they wanted to tell their grandkids that they saw a golfer win the grand slam - last two were 1966 and 2000.  Of course they were also behind BDC because that’s how he rolls with the crowds - BUT given the choice they would want to witness golfing history.   Happily bdc fell away and they didn’t have to choose at the sharp end.

some of Rory’s shots over the past two rounds have been sensational (and gutsy )

He's such a twat lol

Far from my favourite but the way he has turned his public perception around is an absolute masterclass. And he's actually very genuine the majority of the time. The way he digs out Rory is a bit odd but they've asked that question because they know they won't have spoken and they know that he'll bite on that. The love lost over LIV is probably at its height between these 2. Not to mention he's a pretty fiery guy and has had a shocker on a Sunday of a major, so was likely to be pissed off. Still, he said he wanted cry for Rory on 13 so not quite the villain you think!

I think he's false. This whole man of the people/Captain America persona is a real false image, let's not forget he was disliked before LIV, disliked for going to LIV and it's pure PR from his management team to get him big on YouTube to win back popularity. I don't buy this interaction with the fans either, it's forced, it wasn't there yesterday when he wasn't doing well and he was back to the Bryson we knew.

I credit him/his team for turning the image around, he may have the wool over some eyes, but certainly not mine. He's box office no doubt, he's a brilliant golfer, but the man of the people? Not a chance.

It happens that I was flying back from France and Italy on the first day of the Masters.

I had trepidation about how we would be received this year -- but across two weeks, not a single person treated us with anything but kindness and cordiality.  Bit of a contrast to certain views here.

Don’t forget that the US is in every way the most diverse country on earth, and half of us did NOT vote for an odious idiot/career criminal to run the free world.

Without getting too political and derailing the thread...

We spent 4 days in the US either side of the practice day last Monday in the Carolinas and Georgia (I'm assuming Republican?) What always amazes me is the sheer size and scale of the US - it's really 50 different countries within one.

During our brief stay we had a few chats with locals, people in bars, and with the drivers of our shuttles. We asked about the whole Trump tariff thing and the common response we got was on the lines of "Lets see what happens. Hopefully it'll be good for American jobs in the long term"

No one commented about the wider implication on the world economy, the markets, or our pensions. Just an insular view on what it all means to the US.

I know the % of Americans with a passport has risen from about 3% in 1990 to about 45% now, but I think people generalize about Americans because it's all about them.

P.S. I know you're a decent bloke and a man of the world so present company absolutely excluded :)

There are a lot of good people over there - I know that from when I spent time there myself.

It's just unfortunate that the not so good people are controlling the mostly heard narrative at pretty much all levels beyond direct interpersonal experiences right now.

On topic though, I do wonder if this triumph will free Rory up to win a few more now.

Georgia is basically on par (pun intended) with the rest of the country on a left-right basis now and like most of it, the divide is strongly urban-suburban vs. rural. SC is still pretty conservative but again, NC is just barely right of the national axis (it's a battleground state) and the cities and college areas are very liberal.

Just posted this on the fundraising page in general chat, but as its golf related, I'll stick it in here too!

Some of you might remember about 3 years ago, I did the 'Longest Day' golf challenge for Macmillan and you lot outdid yourselves by helping me and a mate make a lot of money.

Well, this year, I'm back. With a bigger challenge!

On 19th June, we'll be teeing up at sunrise and heading to the 19th hole (more like the 91st hole) at sunset.

Playing golf all day, at least 16 hours, I think a bit more, in aid of our local cancer respite hospice, Cynthia Spencer.

Joining me will be my step-son and my nephew. They lost their grandfather, my father-in-law, almost 3 years ago. Cynthia Spencer did so much for him regarding end of life care. They even had a nurse with him at home, by his bedside, when he lost his battle with cancer.

She was simply incredible and supported Dave and the family through the toughest of times.

On the challenge, we'll walk the whole way and carry our bags, no buggies or trollies allowed. We'll probably each cover around the distance of a marathon.

We'd all be incredibly grateful if you can donate anything you can.

Thanks for reading, it's a charity that's incredibly close to our hearts. The Just Giving link is below.

'Top 10 Tommy' in contention at Harbour Town.

But knowing Fleetwood, he'll plod along the back 9 and finish in the top 10. Again.
