cambridgefox Posted 3 April 2013 Posted 3 April 2013 Said Elite, what a joke,ok got a BIT of savings and earn ok(not extreme)but just because I socialise with an accountant and a chief exec, who are as common as muck,I'm elite!
The Doctor Posted 3 April 2013 Posted 3 April 2013 Emergent Service Worker boyo. To be expected as a student I suppose - although sticking down my lecturers as people I know socially (I've been drinking with them a fair bit) seems cheating somewhat.

If you're in student digs you wouldn't be able to afford if not for mummy and daddy or a whopping great loan I'm pretty sure you should be putting in your parents' household income and savings. Still ESW? I'd be surprised.
I am Rod Hull Posted 3 April 2013 Posted 3 April 2013 I dont need to do this.... I know i`m working class, but i`m pissing myself at those on here who think they`re middle class because of this bullshit test. Earning around the "national average" wage and going to a bbq once a year that is frequented by a few professionals does not make you middle class
ozleicester Posted 4 April 2013 Posted 4 April 2013 The British obsession with "class" is incredible and disturbing. When we returned in 2010, i was amazed to see that the class system was still so strongly entrenched from what it had been when we left in the 70s. I assumed it was the upper classes that propogated it and kept it alive and well, but i since discovered all the "classes" want and work toward maintaining the system. WHY? It does no good for anyone. Im not saying that class doesnt play a part in other countries and cultues... it certainly does, but, it seems in Britain, it is as much a part of the law of the land as religion, both of these "imagined" concepts have their place... but neither of them should be used the way they are currently, which is to control others.

But clearly people are born into and do in turn exist within a certain division of society. I see the class system as an interesting bit of demography. I don't see any evidence of anyone being controlled. It's not like the working classes are jealous of the middle class and are desperate for a promotion. Most people are happy to stay in their class. That's why we see examples of people making a lot of money but maintaining their working class lifestyles. Nobody is forcing anybody to do anything, it is natural behavior. Maybe the British aren't willing to be patronised to the extent where we're expected to pretend classes don't exist?

Guest Posted 4 April 2013 Posted 4 April 2013 Without a class system how could people be upwardly mobile? Without wanting to be upwardly mobile how could any of us even exist? both Labour and cons thrive of propogating the class system ideal.

Surely we can find a better way of advancement and striving than doing it just to be 'better' than the other guy? When it comes to sport I'm as zealous and competitive as the next man but in life...nah, don't have the ego.

leicsmac Posted 4 April 2013 Posted 4 April 2013 It was tongue in cheek. A comment on the polotics of today. That's fair enough then. In that case I'd address the same point to the advocates of the class system in this thread (Moose et al).
MooseBreath Posted 4 April 2013 Posted 4 April 2013 I wouldn't say I'm an advocate, I'd say it exists, why bother pretending that it doesn't?
cambridgefox Posted 4 April 2013 Posted 4 April 2013 I can honestly say that being from Cambridge I look down on the likes of people from Leicester,I can't help it.When I go to a match I look at people and can just tell they are of a lower class.its horrible uuuuurrrrrgggggghhhh.i know I shouldn't feel like that but I do.

It does seem to be ingrained into our national psyche, but as you can probably tell I'm really not a fan. Humanity (particularly in the UK) seems to have this annoying trait of bending at the knees and touching forelocks. Not as much as used to be the case but still....
