Deucalion Posted 4 April 2013 Posted 4 April 2013 Established middle class. Mainly because I own a house, have some savings and do some posh things in my free time. But I know who I am and where I came from.
Deucalion Posted 4 April 2013 Posted 4 April 2013 Class shouldn't exist in this country but clearly does. Ninety something percent of our politicians are millionaires, the vast majority of our civil servants went to public school, while other people are denigrated for having certain jobs, living in certain areas, driving certain cars and wearing certain clothing. Is there anybody prepared to disagree with the point that success, wealth and financial security should depend on the hard work, talent and abilities of the individual rather than any accident of birth or privilege of upbringing?
Zingari Posted 4 April 2013 Posted 4 April 2013 I don't think class exists, only in peoples heads. That's where most ideas and attitudes live
AoWW Posted 4 April 2013 Posted 4 April 2013 I can honestly say that being from Cambridge I look down on the likes of people from Leicester,I can't help it.When I go to a match I look at people and can just tell they are of a lower class.its horrible uuuuurrrrrgggggghhhh.i know I shouldn't feel like that but I do. I thought you were from the fens?
cambridgefox Posted 4 April 2013 Posted 4 April 2013 I thought you were from the fens? sssssshhhhh, lived in Cambridge for a year in my early 20's.Does that count? That photo, what a night eh!
ozleicester Posted 5 April 2013 Posted 5 April 2013 I never really wanted to be a train driver, you know. I mean, they told me while at school, if I got two CSEs, when I left school I'd be head of British Steel. That's a lot of nonsense, ennit? I mean, you look at statistics, right. 83% of top British ma nagement have been to a public school and Oxbridge, right? 93% of the BBC have been to a public school and Oxbridge, right? 98% of the KGB have been to a public school and Oxbridge. All you get from a public school, right -- one, you get a top job, right, and two, you get an interest in perverse sexual practices. I mean, that's why British management's so inefficient. As soon as they get in the boardroom, they're all shutting each ot hers' dicks in the door! "Go on, give it another slam, Sir Michael!" BAM! OW OW OW! "Come on, Sir Geoffrey, let's play thePanzer commander and the millkmaid, EW EW EW EW! YOO HOO!"
Rincewind Posted 21 August 2013 Posted 21 August 2013 OK I know the phase is out of date but just watched a program about it. Second part Thursday 9pm I've ordered an information booklet. Mainly because I find the topic interesting. Here is a test. Not done it myself yet cuz its late http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-22000973
separator Posted 21 August 2013 Posted 21 August 2013 I'm 'Technical Middle Class', apparently I like going to the gym and using social media (both of which are not true)
Orkneyfox Posted 21 August 2013 Posted 21 August 2013 Apparently I have now made it to established middle class. Onwards and upwards!
RobHawk Posted 21 August 2013 Posted 21 August 2013 I'm definitely not working class! My grand parents were so i have that background but i'm definitely in one of the middle classes now. The problem with classes though is that theres twats in everyone whether they be chavs or stuck up idiots!
cambridgefox Posted 21 August 2013 Posted 21 August 2013 Established middle class ,although I got Elite in the first section ,really do not think that is the case and precariat in the last.So it probably means Jack.i also socialise with a CEO and a cleaner and are both top people.i just don't judge people on wealth.
pSinatra Posted 21 August 2013 Posted 21 August 2013 I always thought your class predominantly depended on what job you did. This survey doesn't ask what job I do & is more interested in what jobs my friends have. Traditional working class.
Charl91 Posted 21 August 2013 Posted 21 August 2013 Doesn't really take into account that as a student, I'm not going to have a house or an income.
General Smuts Posted 21 August 2013 Posted 21 August 2013 Emergent service workers This class group is financially insecure, scoring low for savings and house value, but high for social and cultural factors. According to the Great British Class Survey results, lots of people in this group: Are young Enjoy a cultured social life Rent their home - almost 90%
Rincewind Posted 21 August 2013 Posted 21 August 2013 Still to do it but I've always thought of myself as working class. Paul O'Grady put it well he said its not about money it is how you treat people' It was an interesting program he said Thatcher broke the spirit of the working class and younger people think of themselves as classless but as they get older they may change. He still regards himself as working class even though he says he lives in a decent house. Interesting life. Started off as a kind of servant cleaning fireplaces. Next week (tonight) it deals with the social side. He comes from the North East so mixed with miners and dockers. I'm the lowest of the low. Although some of the people I know and activities were not listed. I know a CEO but he is head of a charity and I appreciate most music and arts museums and theatres. I'm just skint. and happy to mix with others like me if they are genuine and likeable. PrecariatThis is the poorest and most deprived class group. According to the Great British Class Survey results, lots of people in this group: Tend to mix socially with people like themselves Come from a working class background Rent their home - over 80%
Finnegan Posted 21 August 2013 Posted 21 August 2013 This was done a couple of months ago, I was ESW, same as Smuts. My telly's too big for my house but I only watch pretentious films on it.
MooseBreath Posted 21 August 2013 Posted 21 August 2013 I've been promoted because I've started attending the theatre.
Rincewind Posted 21 August 2013 Posted 21 August 2013 Sorry never realised there was another thread. Don't remember it.
cambridgefox Posted 21 August 2013 Posted 21 August 2013 I've gone down the pecking order in 4 months.By Christmas I might have Ken asking me in as a special guest on the radio!
Rincewind Posted 21 August 2013 Posted 21 August 2013 I've gone down the pecking order in 4 months.By Christmas I might have Ken asking me in as a special guest on the radio! You don't have to be as low as that. We've had City Councillors and CEO's on. We'd like to get Peter Soulsby on but I don't think he dares. We are tougher than Jeremy Paxman. I have done this before (first page) and I was the same. Can't get any lower. I put I know artists but its mainly the writing, photography side. Even though I consider myself working class I have always had some sort of interest in culture whether it be books or classical music. I don't believe you have to be in the top bracket to appreciate it. I am happy with my roots. I don't think I'd fit in with the Hurrah Henry class now.
