ousefox Posted 16 May 2013 Posted 16 May 2013 That goal against Greece will never be forgotten. Good player, but will now be remembered as more of a celebrity. He moved to the US far too early for me. Should have played amongst better players for as long as he could, but i'm sure the money persuaded him to do otherwise.
Guest Bilo Posted 16 May 2013 Posted 16 May 2013 The celebrity culture that surrounds him makes people forget what a good player he was. You don't get to play for Manchester United, AC Milan and Real Madrid or rack up over 100 caps for England, mostly as captain, if you're not very good. His technique and freakishly good passing ability were misused for England to create long ball football in my opinion, but his record in club football rather speaks for itself. Where he goes from here is unknown, but it wouldn't be the biggest shock in the world to see him take his coaching badges in the near future.
LanguedocFox Posted 16 May 2013 Posted 16 May 2013 Pity he never had a season at City - that would have been fun.
Guest Bilo Posted 16 May 2013 Posted 16 May 2013 He'll buy a MLS club now. I can see him investing in the Cosmos and taking a big role there.
Fox92 Posted 16 May 2013 Posted 16 May 2013 Decent player, but he was overrated. Seen more as a celebrity than a footballer. Should not have more caps than Bobby Moore either.
Samilktray Posted 16 May 2013 Posted 16 May 2013 Doubt ill ever see a better player play for England in my lifetime.
purpleronnie Posted 16 May 2013 Posted 16 May 2013 Retired years ago when he left for the MLS spoken like a true ignoramus
AdamN Posted 16 May 2013 Posted 16 May 2013 Decent player, but he was overrated. Seen more as a celebrity than a footballer. Should not have more caps than Bobby Moore either. He's earned every one of his caps and deserves as many as he's got. The amount that Bobby Moore (or any player) has is irrelevant. Top player, top bloke. Hopefully he'll continue as an ambassador for English football.

Towards the end, Beckham would come on for 5/10 minutes and get a cap. Players like Moore played every minute of every game to get caps.
Wymsey Posted 16 May 2013 Posted 16 May 2013 I cannot identify a current England international that has a bit of Beckham's dead-ball specialist quality - and that's saying something indeed.
Captain... Posted 16 May 2013 Posted 16 May 2013 He was a gifted player, but on top of that he worked his nuts off to be a truly great player, he was, unfortunately, often punished by managers for his fame off the pitch, Ferguson shipped him out to prove no player is bigger than the club, Capello inexplicably froze him out at Madrid, and McLaren made the biggest mistake, of many, as England manager, by retiring Beckham. If it wasn't for these managers using Beckham's fame to massage their own egos he would have had a lot more caps and trophies and wouldn't have ended up in the MLS. You could see every time he stepped on the pitch he loved playing football.

If he'd looked like Franck Ribery he wouldn't have achieved the same level of fame, but you can guarantee he'd have been better appreciated by a lot of managers and indeed fans who felt he was little but a celebrity.

Corky Posted 16 May 2013 Posted 16 May 2013 It's a shame that the 606 messageboard isn't running anymore, there was a bloke on there (Plymouth fan) who could not stand the man. Made some of the Pearson detractors look mild in comparison Had a very good career, and made the best of what he had.
Samilktray Posted 16 May 2013 Posted 16 May 2013 Somebody really said Baines is a better set piece specialist. This forum is amazing.
eye666 Posted 16 May 2013 Posted 16 May 2013 Saw him play a couple of years ago for the Galaxy against the Red Bulls. To this day is the best passer/crosser of a ball I have ever seen.
