Kitchandro Posted 16 May 2013 Posted 16 May 2013 I don't really know how to sum up Becks tbh. I've always thought he was overrated, having said that pre-2002 he was a quality player for England as well as United. I think after he broke his foot he was never quite the same. Obviously he's had positive and negative memorable moments that have been mentioned so many times, his red card against Argentina, his free kick against Greece, his redemption against Argentina, jumping out of the tackle against Brazil, etc. I'm grateful to have seen some of these moments, and disappointed to have seen others. Also the game in Munich where he had a blinder. I don't think he deserves to remembered as an all time great but I also don't think people should forget how good he was over a decade ago. Even with his weaknesses that have been much discussed, his technical skill was right up there, and his dead balls were obviously world famous. I don't think England fans don't warm to him because he was too much of a celebrity, it's that after the while he never produced the performances to back it up. For a few years he was much the same as the current England has-beens, who continued to be picked by the manager despite never justifying it on the pitch. He frustrated me between the years of 2002-2006, as did Sven, for that very reason. A good player though and a nice bloke.
Manwell Pablo Posted 16 May 2013 Posted 16 May 2013 Baines - Set pieces are 10x better. You should actually get a days ban from the forum for that comment it is actually that embarrasing.
foxfanazer Posted 16 May 2013 Posted 16 May 2013 As has been said already, that goal against Greece! Very good player, slightly overrated imho but a great ambassador for the game and although he might come across as a bit dim he seems a nice guy
ousefox Posted 16 May 2013 Posted 16 May 2013 No. Yes. As well as Lampard, Scholes, Cole, Terry to name a few from my era of watching football. He had a few very good games for England and no doubt he had a lot of commitment but he was by no means the complete footballer that Gerrard is.
Fox92 Posted 16 May 2013 Posted 16 May 2013 you, Sir, are a fool. Somebody really said Baines is a better set piece specialist. This forum is amazing. You should actually get a days ban from the forum for that comment it is actually that embarrasing. We should all have the same opinion and then we can all agree on everything There would be no need for conversations at the pub, or internet forums anymore... Anyway, I'd really like to see Beckham's set piece conversion rate. It will not be as high as other players... Clint Dempsey, as an example, scored four right footed free kicks and two left footed free kicks for Fulham last season. And did you know Seb Larsson has the highest set piece conversion rate in Europe's top five leagues I know. Beckham's free kick against Greece was sensational, but I cannot remember another one of the top of my head. I'd really like to know his conversion rates. How many goals have England scored recently from a Gerrard set piece? Quite a lot, and a few in the European Championships last year as well. (I don't 'hate' or 'dislike' Beckham. Just think he is overrated. What was the post on the previous page, 'I will never see a better England international in my lifetime').
ousefox Posted 16 May 2013 Posted 16 May 2013 And did you know Seb Larsson has the highest set piece conversion rate in Europe's top five leagues I know. It certainly isn't this season!
ScouseFox Posted 16 May 2013 Posted 16 May 2013 One of the best players in my lifetime. Think he's won pretty much everything he's ever competed in, yeah? Prems, Champions League, FA Cup, MLS, La Liga, French League. Captained his country superbly and earned over 100 caps. The best free kick taker I've ever seen. That free kick against Greece and that penalty against Argentina were two of the best moments of my childhood. A true legend. Thanks David.
MooseBreath Posted 16 May 2013 Posted 16 May 2013 Best player I've ever seen in an England shirt. A superb role model in amongst a shameful generation of footballers. Played his celebrity with dignity and class over the last decade, completely proving wrong everyone who said he was more interested in fame than football. A true great, both on and off the pitch.
Bellend Sebastian Posted 16 May 2013 Posted 16 May 2013 Fantastic player in many respects but his off the pitch fame has always been a mystery to me. Everything's fantastic until he opens his mouth, and then I just find myself drifting off to sleep. A bit like when the Grand Prix is on
FoxesAreBlue Posted 16 May 2013 Posted 16 May 2013 Best player I've ever seen in an England shirt. A superb role model in amongst a shameful generation of footballers. Played his celebrity with dignity and class over the last decade, completely proving wrong everyone who said he was more interested in fame than football. A true great, both on and off the pitch. This. And from what I hear from those who have been lucky enough to meet him. A proper nice bloke too.
ADK Posted 16 May 2013 Posted 16 May 2013 Beckham and Owen sum up the best of an era of actually decent English footballing talent. Famous, yes, but also professional.
Super_horns Posted 16 May 2013 Posted 16 May 2013 As has been said already, that goal against Greece! Very good player, slightly overrated imho but a great ambassador for the game and although he might come across as a bit dim he seems a nice guy Agree with that - one of the decent guys in modern football.
The Year Of The Fox Posted 16 May 2013 Posted 16 May 2013 You know you're getting old when you can remember both Beckham and Scholes breaking into the Man Utd first team and now are around to witness their retirement! The way he turned round the nations opinion of him on the international scene is remarkable and says so much about his passion and desire to play for England. If only players like Ferdinand modelled themselves more on players like him.
Guest shearfox Posted 16 May 2013 Posted 16 May 2013 Great player and a real inspiration for anyone who takes up the game. Always gave 100% for both Club and Country. Fantastic
Durnerz Posted 16 May 2013 Posted 16 May 2013 Model pro and a great person although slightly overratedMcClaren in my view was correct to drop him at the time given that Beckhams 'hollywood' pass routine was getting out of hand and aside from dead balls, his fitness was lacking. Will never forget the great moments, the commitment and desire in the Greece game, the endless crosses, free kicks and workaholic performances down the years, not to mention the honours hes won.I'm sure we'll continue to see him around on our tv screens, I mean who in their right mind would stay at home with THAT woman?
Bilbo Posted 16 May 2013 Posted 16 May 2013 The celebrity culture that surrounds him makes people forget what a good player he was. You don't get to play for Manchester United, AC Milan and Real Madrid or rack up over 100 caps for England, mostly as captain, if you're not very good. His technique and freakishly good passing ability were misused for England to create long ball football in my opinion, but his record in club football rather speaks for itself. Where he goes from here is unknown, but it wouldn't be the biggest shock in the world to see him take his coaching badges in the near future. Something that he and his Mrs created by wearing sarongs and generally whoring themselves to the media.
Jordan Posted 16 May 2013 Posted 16 May 2013 If it wasn't for these managers using Beckham's fame to massage their own egos he would have had a lot more caps and trophies and wouldn't have ended up in the MLS. You could see every time he stepped on the pitch he loved playing football. To be fair, there were two seasons in LA where Beckham rarely gave more than a crap. But to his credit, his last few seasons in the MLS were outstanding by league standards.Everyone talks about that goal vs Greece, but don't forget about the rest of Beckham's performance that day. He wore the captain's armband and played as a central midfielder, and was a beast all game long. I'd never seen Beckham play with such tenacity and leadership--while the rest of the team played with anxiety, he was everywhere on the pitch making tackles. He simply willed his team to victory. That may be the grittiest performance by a midfielder I've ever seen, save for perhaps Zidane playing with one leg and bossing it at Old Trafford for Juventus in the 1999 Champions League semifinal first leg.

wurmer Posted 16 May 2013 Posted 16 May 2013 http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11719/8716489/ That's finished the day off nicely! Oh dear!
lavrentis Posted 16 May 2013 Posted 16 May 2013 Legend. Always seems so level headed for a guy with so much money. Had some bad press over the years but now is loved. Hope he moves into management, can't see it though but would love it if he managed England
