Hugo Sanchez Posted 16 May 2013 Posted 16 May 2013 The most famous footballer of all time. Anyone remember when we play utd at Filbert Street and it was his first game with the shaved head and he came out for the warm up in a beanie hat ? It was fooking mental, all over a hair cut aswell. Seem to remember he scored a free kick in a 6-2 thrashing. Theo scored a belter though.

Doesnt matter anyway. The guy could play. And i mean PLAY. ive never seen anyone with his range of passing before in the flesh. He scored some absolutely sublime goals too when you think back, like Wimbledon, Colombia, the fa cup semi v arsenal, Argentina penalty, the list goes on and on
Fox in the North Posted 17 May 2013 Posted 17 May 2013 What a player *However have just re-watched his penalty misses.....
ozleicester Posted 17 May 2013 Posted 17 May 2013 A true legend of the game. A man who loved football, loved his club and his country. It seems, too many people were distracted by the media hype, instead of watching an incredibly talented footballer playing the game they way it should be played.
Alexikokopops Posted 17 May 2013 Posted 17 May 2013 Decent player, but he was overrated. Seen more as a celebrity than a footballer. Should not have more caps than Bobby Moore either. I've never quite understood the last argument. It's as though Bobby Moore is more remembered for having the most caps rather than being a World Cup winning captain. I'm sure he wouldn't have given two hoots about how many caps he had
Manwell Pablo Posted 17 May 2013 Posted 17 May 2013 We should all have the same opinion and then we can all agree on everything There would be no need for conversations at the pub, or internet forums anymore... Anyway, I'd really like to see Beckham's set piece conversion rate. It will not be as high as other players... Clint Dempsey, as an example, scored four right footed free kicks and two left footed free kicks for Fulham last season. And did you know Seb Larsson has the highest set piece conversion rate in Europe's top five leagues I know. Beckham's free kick against Greece was sensational, but I cannot remember another one of the top of my head. I'd really like to know his conversion rates. How many goals have England scored recently from a Gerrard set piece? Quite a lot, and a few in the European Championships last year as well. (I don't 'hate' or 'dislike' Beckham. Just think he is overrated. What was the post on the previous page, 'I will never see a better England international in my lifetime'). It's not an opinion though is it it's an idiotic false statement. David Beckham scored 30 direct free kicks for Manchester United (twice as many as baines has scored from FK. Pens, and open play) and I can remember a couple against us! 6 for England. Including some very famous world cup free kicks a couple of which you may have been a bit too young to remember live but still shame on you for lack of past knowledge . He's scored about 50 in all competitions. He's also got about 40 odd assists from direct free kicks, he's got one of the best right foots in the history of world football. By all means, I agree he is not a complete footballer and perhaps on the whole over rated by some, but do not say Leighton Baines has a 10x better dead ball delivery it is absurd.
Captain... Posted 17 May 2013 Posted 17 May 2013 Model pro and a great person although slightly overrated McClaren in my view was correct to drop him at the time given that Beckhams 'hollywood' pass routine was getting out of hand and aside from dead balls, his fitness was lacking. It wasn't that McLaren dropped it, it was they way he basically retired him to make his own statement, when he clearly still had something to offer England. He did the right thing in quitting the captaincy as he wasn't guaranteed to start every game, a very difficult decision, but one I give him a lot of credit for and he did it for the good of England. McLaren threw it back in his face when he should have been thanking him. Yeah drop him for a couple of games, try a few other combinations but to exclude him when he clearly loved playing for England and still had a lot to offer was just plain arrogance on McLaren's part.
AyewJoking Posted 17 May 2013 Posted 17 May 2013 The celebrity culture that surrounds him makes people forget what a good player he was. You don't get to play for Manchester United, AC Milan and Real Madrid or rack up over 100 caps for England, mostly as captain, if you're not very good. His technique and freakishly good passing ability were misused for England to create long ball football in my opinion, but his record in club football rather speaks for itself. Where he goes from here is unknown, but it wouldn't be the biggest shock in the world to see him take his coaching badges in the near future. Clearly he was very good but its his celebrity that got him moves to Real, Milan, PSG and Sven handed him most of his England caps.
Manwell Pablo Posted 17 May 2013 Posted 17 May 2013 All 65 direct free kicks he scored. Not many... He's no Leighton Baines though.
Guest Bilo Posted 18 May 2013 Posted 18 May 2013 Leighton Baines' dead ball deliveries are 10 times better than Beckham's. Thank Fox92 for a new low.
Guest ttfn Posted 18 May 2013 Posted 18 May 2013 All 65 direct free kicks he scored. Not many... I have always been a big Beckham fan/defender but I think I had forgotten quite how amazing his set-pieces were. Some of the early ones, in particular, were absolutely obscene. There's about 40 free kicks in there which are so good that I honestly reckon I haven't seen any as good as them in the Premier League this season.
ScouseFox Posted 18 May 2013 Posted 18 May 2013 Just been subbed for PSG and cried a lot. Just another sign that he just loves playing football.
StanSP Posted 18 May 2013 Posted 18 May 2013 Nothing but pure respect for David Beckham and I often think he gets slated too much in some parts. The tears tonight showed how much he loves to play and will miss playing football.
ScouseFox Posted 18 May 2013 Posted 18 May 2013 Can't find a pic anywhere but the scenes after the board went up for him to be subbed are ones i've never seen before. Whole game stopped as every PSG player took it in turns to individually give him a hug whilst he sobbed his heart out. Proper emotional shit. What a man.
Fox92 Posted 18 May 2013 Posted 18 May 2013 Leighton Baines' dead ball deliveries are 10 times better than Beckham's. Thank Fox92 for a new low. I'm still laughing at that. His set piece delivery is good, I said that, but he isn't the complete player people make him out to be. I admit I did go a bit far with the 10x statement, but I simply don't agree that 'no current International has delivery as good as him' when we have Baines who's delivery is one of the best in the Prem, and also how many goals have we scored recently from Gerrard set pieces? A few, including several at last year's European Championships. As for a 'new low'. Do I care what people think of me (having never met me personally) on an internet forum? No... I said one person has a better delivery than another, it wasn't like I was approving for one person to murder another one. But where would we be without controversial statements? There would be no need for conversations, opinions or forums... Just call me Morrisey.

It does show how respected the bloke is in international football, that goes beyond celebrity. I'm not sure I've ever seen that for a retiring player before.

Baines is an excellent set piece taker, but he is not even in the same league as Beckham in that regard.

Don't aspire to be a tosser. I genuinely cannot think of a more consistently excellent set piece taker than Beckham, or a player with a better range of passing. I don't think there's anybody playing at the moment in the same league as Beckham in his pomp when it comes to these attributes.
whoareyaaa Posted 18 May 2013 Posted 18 May 2013 Great player and top bloke, such a shame he has now left the game I've not seen a better dead ball specialist or long range passer yet. I remember watching a video and he used to practice his freekicks by hanging a tyre in the corner of the goal.
ScouseFox Posted 18 May 2013 Posted 18 May 2013 I never have and don't think I ever will see anyone consistently take a better set piece than Beckham.
