Raj Posted 6 June 2013 Posted 6 June 2013 Me and a mate were talking about successful Englishmen abroad.. Without googling or anything who would you say have been a success outside of England. Players- Lineker/Archibald-Barca Gazza-Lazio? Managers- Robbo-Barca. ????
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 6 June 2013 Posted 6 June 2013 Hargreaves and McManaman were decent overseas as was Becks. Didn't Keegan play well overseas for Hamburg or similar.
Finnegan Posted 6 June 2013 Posted 6 June 2013 Not quite English but I'm sure I read somewhere recently that Paul Lambert had played for a German club or something...
pSinatra Posted 6 June 2013 Posted 6 June 2013 I never quite understood it but the Italians seemed to love David Platt. John Charles was Welsh but had a record of 93 goals in 150 games for Juventus. Not bad

Raj Posted 6 June 2013 Author Posted 6 June 2013 Since when does Raj have mates? I did only say A MATE!!!..Tis the only one i got!! Some good shouts with Kegan,Mcmamamamamamamam and Hargreaves. Not many others though are there???
Bayfox Posted 6 June 2013 Posted 6 June 2013 Ince? Mark hateley? Lineker is well liked but not sure he was a success as they played him wide right. Hargreaves hardly counts he grew up abroad.
Guest Posted 6 June 2013 Posted 6 June 2013 Jonny Wilkinson (seeing as there's no mention of footballers specifically
Aus Fox Posted 6 June 2013 Posted 6 June 2013 Des walker played in Italy for a season or two samdoria, I think?? Rohnan Rickets who looked amazing when he came on to the scene has played in a different country every time I hear of him, last I heard he was in India. And Michael Mancienne is doing well in Germany
davieG Posted 6 June 2013 Posted 6 June 2013 Joe Baker and Jimmy Greaves both spent short spells in Italy but were enticed back by Arsenal / Spurs both big and successful in that time.
Raj Posted 6 June 2013 Author Posted 6 June 2013 Was Des Walker any good though abroad? DG-Yes heard Greavsie was class abroad. Folk reckon England being shit on the National scene is cos not enough English players move abroad to play?
Alf Bentley Posted 6 June 2013 Posted 6 June 2013 Michael Robinson, ex-Liverpool striker, born in England (Leicester, according to wiki), but played for Republic of Ireland.... Was never that great a player anywhere, in truth, but did go and play in Spain - and went native after he'd finished playing and became a football commentator (in fluent Spanish).
Mack Posted 6 June 2013 Posted 6 June 2013 No one mentioned Beckham yet? Hoddle also did OK. Vinny Samways played in Spain for a number of years.
Captain... Posted 6 June 2013 Posted 6 June 2013 Ray Wilkins, Chris Waddle But it is very small number of players since the prem formed. I don't think that the national team suffers because we don't have Englishmen playing abroad, I think it is that there aren't enough English players playing for the top clubs in the top leagues of Europe so we have a much diminished pool of players to choose from.

Playing abroad could help them develop new and improve current skills especially where the game is played 'differently'. I'm sure foreign players do playing in the PL.
Bert Posted 6 June 2013 Posted 6 June 2013 No one mentioned Beckham yet? Hoddle also did OK. Vinny Samways played in Spain for a number of years. Well, not until the second post of the topic anyway.... Mark Hughes - albeit welsh, still British.
