Captain... Posted 6 June 2013 Posted 6 June 2013 Playing abroad could help them develop new and improve current skills especially where the game is played 'differently'. I'm sure foreign players do playing in the PL. It could help, but I think the damage is done in England at a much earlier age. I just think that we have about 15 English players playing regularly at the very top level, used to the big pressure games, competing with the best against the best, really we need more players playing in the Champions League. Oxlade-Chamberlain, Walcott, Wilshire, Cahill, Cole, Lampard, Terry, Ferdinand, Jones, Smalling, Scholes, Young, Cleverly, Carrick, Rooney, Welbeck, Hart, Lescott, Milner, Barry, Rodwell, Richards So that is 22 Englishmen in the Champions League this season, of which 2 are retired from international football, 3 more aren't far from it, a number of them aren't in the first 11 for their club and all of them failed in the CL this season. Oh and Jermaine Pennant for Zaragoza, anyone said that?

Fox92 Posted 6 June 2013 Posted 6 June 2013 Wasn't McManaman the first Englishmen to win the European Cup with a foreign team?
pSinatra Posted 6 June 2013 Posted 6 June 2013 Its one of my bugbears, the lack of english players willing to go abroad to improve their ability. Is it this, or is it that nobody wants them. There's not many English players I can think of who would do well playing a more 'European' style of football. I do agree that the national team would benefit from having players playing on the continent......where they may learn how to retain the football & not instinctively lump it to the tall bloke.

I think many clubs would be interested in Walcott, Lennon, Sinclair or Oxlade Chamberlain, especially Spanish clubs, the problem is that they don't represent value for money, we over value English players and pay far too much in wages in the PL. Money talks and all those players would rather have more money as a bit part player in their teams, rather than go abroad.

There are a few that European clubs may be interested in & I would add Wilshere to that list. I was thinking more about the overall technical ability of English players in comparison with those in Germany, Italy, France, Spain & a few other countries around the world. If you look at the German team, for example, each player would be of interest to the top clubs in Europe. The same for the Spanish & Italian teams. You couldn't say the same for England. I can't see many top clubs falling over themselves to buy the likes of Milner? There are the very best players in the world who have no interest in playing in the EPL. They may make a fortune but the EPL offers nothing in terms of football development.
Aus Fox Posted 6 June 2013 Posted 6 June 2013 Rob Ullathorne and Tony Dorigo also did very well abroad. Jay Bothroyd also came back from a stint abroad a far better player, too much time in England has made hime shit again though
RowlattsFox Posted 6 June 2013 Posted 6 June 2013 Heard people blame England's shiteness on lack of English in the premier league and also lack English players abroad, which is it? Can't be both surely.
davieG Posted 6 June 2013 Posted 6 June 2013 Heard people blame England's shiteness on lack of English in the premier league and also lack English players abroad, which is it? Can't be both surely. It can be both. Spain have a high % of Spanish players in their leagues but also have plenty playing abroad.
MC Prussian Posted 6 June 2013 Posted 6 June 2013 How about Tony Cascarino? I know he played for Ireland, but he's born and bred in England. Did really well for Marseille in the mid- to late Nineties.
Darkon84 Posted 6 June 2013 Posted 6 June 2013 Uncle Woy Hodgson did alright abroad. Did Luther Blissett play for Milan at some point, or am I going insane?
Captain... Posted 6 June 2013 Posted 6 June 2013 Heard people blame England's shiteness on lack of English in the premier league and also lack English players abroad, which is it? Can't be both surely. Well it is both, it is a lack of English players playing at the very top level, whether it is in the PL or other leagues, if you see my other post I listed all the English players that played in the Champions League, not enough for a World Cup squad. It wouldn't matter if we didn't have players playing abroad if our best teams were packed with English talent, and likewise it wouldn't matter that the prem is full forrins, if there were English players playing at the top in the other leagues in Europe.
Pride_Of_The_Midlands Posted 6 June 2013 Posted 6 June 2013 Loads of Englishmen in the early 20th century who we have never heard of. English people taught basically all other countries how to play football. If we had a World Cup back then we would have killed everyone. Loads of countries (even major ones) had an Englishman in charge of their national team back in them olden times.
LanguedocFox Posted 6 June 2013 Posted 6 June 2013 Trevor Francis did quite well in Italy for a while - helped Sampdoria win their first Italian cup.
Corky Posted 6 June 2013 Posted 6 June 2013 McManaman won two European Cups with Real. McClaren won a Dutch league title as manager of Twente.
ADK Posted 6 June 2013 Posted 6 June 2013 We have a league that outclasses the standard of our national team and FIFA rulings about having home grown players actually makes English players less likely to go abroad as they are going to attract wages above their real value when playing in England.
Manwell Pablo Posted 6 June 2013 Posted 6 June 2013 Confused are we naming players who did well or just played abroad.... Joe Cole was well liked at Lille.
