Captain... Posted 13 August 2013 Posted 13 August 2013 Spot on, I love the place. Intend to retire out there. Plan to move back there as soon as I can get a non UK based contract, why wait until you are retired get out there and enjoy it now, before Germany buys it and starts making it efficient and letting Health and Safety spoil all the fun.
I am Rod Hull Posted 13 August 2013 Posted 13 August 2013 Which bit in particular do you disagree with? I've lived in many parts of England, and visited even more, and yes it has its good points, but seriously do you honestly disagree with any of that list I made? I can disagree with all of your points, but that wont stop you going all high and mighty on me.
Captain... Posted 13 August 2013 Posted 13 August 2013 I can disagree with all of your points, but that wont stop you going all high and mighty on me. Not going high mighty, but you seriously think you can argue the weather, the food, the wine, the beaches, the cost of living is better in England? Women is subjective, but seriously Spanish women are hot, even the chavs, until they reach about 40, then almost overnight turn wrinklier than my scrotum. The siestas, fair enough each to their own, but I love a good snooze after stuffing my face and a couple of glasses of wine in the middle of the day. The fiestas, well if you would prefer a day of Caribbean Carnival to a 19 day celebration of fireworks or a week of running with Bulls, or 3 days of stuffing your face all day and drinking all night, then fair enough.

absolutelegend Posted 13 August 2013 Posted 13 August 2013 Don't judge Spain (or anywhere else for that matter) by the crap places they send British package holiday makers to. Believe it or not foxestalkers, Majorca isn't just Magaluf, and the mainland not just Lloret de Mar. For me Spain is probably one of the most vibrant, beautiful and culturally rich countries in the world, and certainly has my favourite food and wine However, they're certainly going through some pretty tough times at the mo to put it mildly. On the Gibraltar point, I was there back in April, and it took me an hour by car to transition the 100m or so from the airport to the mainland, and there was hardly anybody there. From what I've read, it's got a lot worse since then. IMO they are clearly being deliberately problematic. Obviously conflict (albeit diplomatic) is the last thing I'd want, but the interests of Britains/Gibratarias in that region need to be represented by our government.
The Year Of The Fox Posted 13 August 2013 Posted 13 August 2013 I have to say I love Spain and Spanish folk. And ice never been to magaluf by the way. I've never been to Magaluf by the way.
Jon the Hat Posted 13 August 2013 Posted 13 August 2013 Judging Spain by Magaluf or any of the tourist twat hotspots is like judging England by standing in a pool of sick surrounded by chavs at 3am outside a shit nightclub in Coventry.
Fox in the North Posted 13 August 2013 Posted 13 August 2013 I have no plans to visit Spain again, been somewhere in the North - can't remember what it was called but it was most forgettable. Majorca contains Magaluf so that qualifies as the worst island in the world. And I once ended up in Lloret de Mar, which is basically the anus of the Universe. Sure there are nice parts but I've not seen them Been France, Italy and Greece a few times and have nothing but love for all three. But if you consider being pissed out of your face lying next to a rotten swimming pool crammed full of noisy fat English kids covered in your own sick a holiday, then Spain's the place to be Mate get travelling to places like cordoba, Sevilla and Granada. Lloret de mar definitely isn't an accurate representation of Spain.
Finnaldo Posted 13 August 2013 Posted 13 August 2013 Step day's family lives near the Basque Country. The chilled atmosphere and the simple way of life is astonishing. Combine that with some beautiful churches and great restaurants you've got a winner.
ADK Posted 13 August 2013 Posted 13 August 2013 Spain is ok, there's bits i like and bits i dislike. I think my favourite EU country so far is Germany. They are all pretty nice though we are lucky to have so many great countries near us.
Julian Joachim Jr Shabadoo Posted 13 August 2013 Posted 13 August 2013 I fear I may have been quick to judge, just the Gibraltar nonsense sparked me off I think I'm sure there are some great places in Spain, I just haven't seen them myself. Whereas I've toured France and loved everywhere I visited, the few places in Spain I've been to haven't exactly wowed me - probably bad luck and bad planning (and ruined by English people) As an aside though, I couldn't live in a world without chorizo. Spanish omelettes are also pretty much amongst the best breakfast dishes when cooked right
purpleronnie Posted 13 August 2013 Posted 13 August 2013 Every country has it shitholes and beautiful bits, to say otherwise is plain wrong.
bovril Posted 13 August 2013 Posted 13 August 2013 Every country has it shitholes and beautiful bits, to say otherwise is plain wrong. Apart from Slovenia. Slovenia is like 100% beauty. I got a bit unnerved there. I thought they might kidnap and sacrifice me for being a scruffpot.
absolutelegend Posted 13 August 2013 Posted 13 August 2013 They are all pretty nice though we are lucky to have so many great countries near us. This. I think we are so lucky in Europe. The cultural and geograpical diversity within 2 or 3 hours of us is fantastic.

Mike Oxlong Posted 6 November 2013 Posted 6 November 2013 Spain is a great country, the food, the wine, the cider, the fiestas, the siestas, ...... . And the Iniestas
Guest Bilo Posted 6 November 2013 Posted 6 November 2013 Spain is a lovely place in parts; get away from the shit tourist hotspots and you'll find a fantastically diverse country with culture, fine food, stunning landscapes and friendly people. On the other hand, people saying that England can't compare are probably judging by our mediocre cities. London for me is still the finest city in the world in so many ways and places like Stratford-upon-Avon, York, Lincoln, Chester, the Peak District, the Lake District and Cornwall aren't visited by people from all over the world for no reason.
bovril Posted 6 November 2013 Posted 6 November 2013 As somebody else wrote on this thread, every place has its beautiful spots and shit holes. Every country has interesting traditions and at the same time little imperfections the locals aren't proud of. There's no point comparing countries as they've all had very different histories and ultimately they're often just lines drawn on a map by some 19th century Prussian or Austro-Hungarian pen-pusher.

ousefox Posted 6 November 2013 Posted 6 November 2013 Seville and Cordoba are probably one of the 2 nicest places I've visited and Granada is incredible too. I probably like Cordoba so much as it's like a Spanish version of York. Anyone who wouldn't go to Spain because of the Benidorm's, Maga, etc. is mad.

Santiago de Compostela is gorgeous as well, as is Barcelona when you leave Las Ramblas.

Agreed. Add the northern highlands of Scotland, and it's complete. Was there a few weeks ago and in York in early May. Cornwall or the Lakes next year.
