bovril Posted 24 September 2013 Posted 24 September 2013 Comes close, but I'd put Izzet, Lennon, Elliott, Taggart, Kaamark, Guppy ahead of him. He was a good player for us though Parker was ten times the footballer he ever was.
svensson Posted 24 September 2013 Posted 24 September 2013 Agreed. Without this club giving him a chance I don't think he'd have got Premiership football (for many years at least) and certainly wouldn't be the media "star" he is today. Based on what? Pure folly.
Corky Posted 24 September 2013 Posted 24 September 2013 Based on what? Pure folly. Was he a great player? No, he made the best of what he had, was instructed to do so by O'Neill and did an important job. When he tried to play a bit more expansively he wasn't the same player. We gave him a chance early in his career, would he have been given another one in the next four years or so? He can bang on about how we as fans were disrespectful to him but he should be more grateful for the chance we offered him and supported him, even through his appalling final season with us.

Erm you claim he would't have been given a chance for years in the topflight if we hadn't given him one. How do you know? He came through the ranks at United and then Crewe, couldn't have really had a better football education. Seems strange that someone so "&hit" managed to stay in the prem for so long....

I don't know for certain, it's my own view. And I never said he was shit, I said he wasn't a great player. That's not the same thing, he's in the middle ground that is lost when we have debates now. He made the best of what he had, that's not a criticism by the way.

We gave him a chance and he repaid us by covering every inch of grass and putting in 100% effort in every game, thats we he gave back. If he chooses to support Derby over us, who cares? He was excellent for us whilst here and earnt every penny we paid him. We appear to have forgotten that.
Bert Posted 24 September 2013 Posted 24 September 2013 He admits himself he wasn't the greatest of footballers, but teams certainly didn't like playing against him. O'Neill made him think he was the best footballer in the world and that's why we got so much out of him.
Ric Flair Posted 24 September 2013 Posted 24 September 2013 He actually became a better player when he left us and went to Brum and Blackburn. But he learnt how to play footballer instead of being a clown at Leicester and that was O'Neill and the coaches doing. He could have quite easily never progressed from Crewe and made it at a higher level, like hundreds of run of the mill players. That being said I don't mind Sav and i've spoke to him a few years back and unless he was just trying to appease me he had a lot of very kind things to say about Leicester. I get the feeling he's not a Pearson fan though.
hackneyfox Posted 24 September 2013 Posted 24 September 2013 He was cheered to the rafters when he walked back on to the pitch at Filbert Street with Birmingham. He got booed when he got Matt Elliott sent off. Then he moaned years later because we booed him at Brighton claiming he was at his lowest point ever, so were we.
Dickov22 Posted 24 September 2013 Posted 24 September 2013 His actions seem to suggest otherwise, had a massive bee in his bonnet about the club not backing him up more when he decorated the ref's toilet and for some reason he seems to have let that filter down into how he views the fans. As for booing him he deserves it, I don't recall a single Leicester fan having a bad word to say about him until the rather needless antics Bert points out in his post, which is enough for me, especially kissing the Birmingham badge, the lack of respect shown to the club that paid his wages and played a massive part in him becoming a name English football is disgusting if you ask me. I really don't care nor am I surprised he wants Derby to win tonight. It's completely what I'd expect. He got booed right from the start of that game, prior to the sending off and badge kissing. He then went on to be the best player on the pitch. We got outplayed, our fans got pissed off, so they booed him. He was fantastic for us, and we booed him. I can't bear the bitterness football fans display- it's petty. As for his comments yesterday, he's a bit pantomime, I wouldn't take it so personally.
Dickov22 Posted 24 September 2013 Posted 24 September 2013 Heskey, Parker, Walsh, Keller? Heskey was crap a lot of the time.

No he didn't he was cheered to the rafters by the kop, Leicester fans have a history of applauding old players on to the pitch and then pantomime booing their first touch, the booing really started after the Elliott incident.

No he wasn't because this game wasn't even at Filbert Street. He was booed and I think it's because he said that he'd be staying as well.
artursteppe Posted 24 September 2013 Posted 24 September 2013 Didn't he get someone sent off when he played against us one time - Dion Dublin, or am I befuddled?

No. He was booed from the moment his name was read out. Booooooooo Just stupid
Merging Cultures Posted 24 September 2013 Posted 24 September 2013 We are football fans. We boo our old players and act like tits most of the time.
Dickov22 Posted 24 September 2013 Posted 24 September 2013 Didn't he get someone sent off when he played against us one time - Dion Dublin, or am I befuddled? Good luck to him if he did. Dublin was fvcking crap for us!
artursteppe Posted 24 September 2013 Posted 24 September 2013 Savage, in short - if he played for your team, you loved him, if he didn't, you hated him. That's why everyone is mixed up about him.
Dickov22 Posted 24 September 2013 Posted 24 September 2013 We are football fans. We boo our old players and act like tits most of the time. Not all of us. Only ex player is ever boo is Beckford. And that's because he didn't try
Merging Cultures Posted 24 September 2013 Posted 24 September 2013 Not all of us. Only ex player is ever boo is Beckford. And that's because he didn't try Most of us are still tits though
svensson Posted 24 September 2013 Posted 24 September 2013 Didn't he get someone sent off when he played against us one time - Dion Dublin, or am I befuddled? Dion was playing for Villa, sav poked him in the eye from behind.
Durnerz Posted 24 September 2013 Posted 24 September 2013 Savage had a habit of nipping into sides when they were at their peak, playing alongside Lennon/Izzet at Leicester, Tugay at Blackburn etc so he could get on with harrying, winding up the opposition to gain advantage and the odd decent set play delivery, take a look at him in his Derby days he barely stood out even in that shower they put out every week. I like the guy for how he was for us but have no respect for him nowerdays, just a joker who yet again was in the right place at the right time for a media career along with the Garth Crooks and Mark Bright's of the television world. Shame really.
BrummieFOX Posted 24 September 2013 Posted 24 September 2013 It would normally wind me up if an ex-player came out and said something like that but I honestly couldn't care less that it's Savage. Loved him as a player here but he is absolutely awful on 5 Live. He can''t control his emotions, has a pretty poor knowledge of football and just gets into such petty arguments with most callers that disagree with him. Sometimes it's entertaining to hear him wind himself up and muddle through an argument, but mostly it's embarrassing. Comes across as an idiot.

Which, if we all had the same stage that he has, we would all shamelessly do too.
