davieG Posted 10 October 2013 Posted 10 October 2013 http://www.newsatden.co.uk/27036-millwall-targeting-january-deal-for-leicester-city-loan-star.html? STEVE Lomas has confirmed he wants to sign loan star Martyn Waghorn on a permanent basis in January. Waghorn, who scored his second Millwall goal in the defeat to Bournemouth last Saturday, has been an instant hit at The Den - with Lomas describing him as "a breath of fresh air." And the Lions boss is determined to convince the Leicester City striker that his long-term future lies in south London when the transfer window opens again in the New Year. "Hopefully we can get Waggy signed up and he can stay," Lomas said. "He's only 23 and I feel he can really kick on by playing regularly with us. "Ideally you want to bring in players who are in their mid-20s because they've got a long lifespan with you. You don't want to take a short-term view to all of your transfers, you want to look further ahead, even though that's not always possible. "Waggy has realised what the fans are all about here and if he gives it everything, they'll love him. If he gives it everything and he scores goals, they'll love him even more. "He has done well and there is more to come from him. He's had a year-and-a-half where he has barely played football, so I think he can get fitter and sharper as well. He can play up front and out wide, so that's a bonus for us. He's a flexible forward. "He is a good lad, he's hungry, he wants to learn and he wants to get better. That's the type of player we want here. He's been a breath of fresh air to be honest." January will be Leicester's final opportunity to cash in on Waghorn, who will be out-of-contract next June and able to join a rival club on a free transfer unless they agree to a sale. Blackburn, Wolves and Barnsley have previously expressed an interest in the former England U21 international, but Millwall are leading the chase for his signature and the club's board will back a move to land him. Meanwhile, Lomas will this week make a decision on trialist Stephen Hunt. The ex-Wolves winger has been training with the Lions for the past two weeks and could be offered terms. "In an ideal world, you don't want to be bringing in players on short-term deals or loans - but that's the hand we've been dealt," Lomas said. "We're trying to move things about and make things happen within budget. Stephen will probably be with us until the end of the week and then we'll have a look at the situation." Brokering a deal with Hunt could be made easier by the fact that he and Lomas share the same agent. "He will try to get the best deal for his client and we will do what is best for the club," Lomas said.
RizLCFC Posted 10 October 2013 Posted 10 October 2013 I'd love to get a million for him but I think it will be closer to half that amount, especially with him being out of contract in June. It will be a good move for him and us, he can progress and play every week, sitting on the bench here won't get him anywhere. For us, we will get a bit of cash and his wages off the books, for a virtually unused player.
Dan Posted 10 October 2013 Posted 10 October 2013 £1m - £1.5m. Will do please. I somehow don't see that happening.
5waller5 Posted 10 October 2013 Posted 10 October 2013 They'll just love him a little bit then! "Waggy has realised what the fans are all about here and if he gives it everything, they'll love him. If he gives it everything and he scores goals, they'll love him even more.
Leicester_Numan Posted 10 October 2013 Posted 10 October 2013 I'd like him to stay but I certainly wouldn't begrudge him a move. He needs to be playing every week. Cash in the bank and wages off the books for an unused player heading into the transfer window can only be a good thing for all concerned.
Monsell1976 Posted 10 October 2013 Posted 10 October 2013 Nominal fee due to being out of contract in the summer, I would personally keep him on our books, as it's a long season and he maybe needed, and if match fit he could be alright.
Beliall Posted 10 October 2013 Posted 10 October 2013 good for him. such a shame that after a good loan spell he couldn't carry it on. only bad side is he'll be another kermogant to score loads against us
GingerrrFox Posted 10 October 2013 Posted 10 October 2013 Despite what many people think on here, Waghorn will go on to have a very good career away from us and I think he will play in the Premiership in time. Still young and has time to put it all together.
Soar Fox Posted 10 October 2013 Posted 10 October 2013 Shame really. He offers more coming off the bench than Schluup does and looks more interested than Wood a majority of the time.
Corky Posted 10 October 2013 Posted 10 October 2013 I'll just add the obligatory "Could they take Gallagher too?"
_Fatboyslow_ Posted 10 October 2013 Posted 10 October 2013 Shame really. He offers more coming off the bench than Schluup does and looks more interested than Wood a majority of the time. I tend to agree, I just get a bit preplexed with his preformances. Maybe he feels he should start as that's why he came to us in the first place. Still it's better to get something for him than to see him walk
BrummieFOX Posted 10 October 2013 Posted 10 October 2013 Good for him and hope he does get a permanent move. Can't see us getting near £1m though.
cityfanlee23 Posted 10 October 2013 Posted 10 October 2013 £1m - £1.5m. Will do please. Wouldnt get 750k for him, 450k max I think

Still young and has time to put it all together. I'll save this post and remind you of it in a few years time because he definitely won't!

Still young and has time to put it all together. I agree, really do think that he'll do a good job at Millwall if he's given regular games and it wouldn't surprise me at all if he ends up in the Premier League before his career is over. Shame really. He offers more coming off the bench than Schluup does and looks more interested than Wood a majority of the time. I honestly don't think Waghorn offers an awful lot coming off the bench and that's coming from someone who's been accused of being Martyn Waghorn on this forum.
KFS Posted 10 October 2013 Posted 10 October 2013 He's been good at Millwall to be fair, do we think he's on a big wage?
The Year Of The Fox Posted 10 October 2013 Posted 10 October 2013 Hope he stays. Not read the article but I'd always presumed NP wanted him back in January and firing on all cylinders. There aren't many better strikers in the league when he is IMO. Much much better than Schlupp
GingerrrFox Posted 10 October 2013 Posted 10 October 2013 I'll save this post and remind you of it in a few years time because he definitely won't! He's better than Schlupp and Vardy IMO when he's had a run of games and is on top form. Order of our strikers when on top form for me 1) Wood 2) Nugent 3) Waghorn 4) Vardy 5) Schlupp 6) Hopper.

What I said was, he definitely won't play regularly in the Premiership.
