Manwell Pablo Posted 19 November 2013 Posted 19 November 2013 Yes I understand that. Although retiring in football means nothing these days, just look at Ben Foster, Paul Scholes etc. In reply to Dan, I know it's time to move on from JT, but our defence lacks everything what his game is. He's looked a bit shoddy for Chelsea this season. Might be ageing early. Don't get me wrong was player of the tournament for me at 2012 but maybe his time has passed. All pie in the sky anyway he's retirement was somewhat different to Fosters or Schole's in the reasons behind it and I can't see them changing.
Dan Posted 19 November 2013 Posted 19 November 2013 A look at the Dutch defence at the last World Cup shows that you don't need individually good defenders to go a long way. A look at the Dutch midfield and forwards suggests that the above probably only applies if you've got lots of good attacking options to make up for it. The Dutch had the midfield and attack to grab the initiative which England don't have. They're on another level to us in that department although in fairness, I'd have picked the exact same attacking four that he's gone for tonight, so it'll be interesting to see how we play.

Much needed flair player
Guest MattP Posted 19 November 2013 Posted 19 November 2013 You know your in a shit era when a player like Sturridge is regarded as a 'must'. Could be painful viewing tonight, even a Germany b side should be too strong.

Could be painful viewing tonight, even a Germany b side should be too strong. Just my opinion. We haven't got many/any players that can beat a man
Dan Posted 19 November 2013 Posted 19 November 2013 Agree with both points. Hard to knock Sturridge at the minute though.
Guest MattP Posted 19 November 2013 Posted 19 November 2013 Just my opinion. We haven't got many/any players that can beat a man Oh I agree, it's just depressing we've gone from strikers like Fowler and Ferdinand not making squads to Sturridge and Welbeck as starters within 15 years.

Yeah it is a sad state of affairs. Although I do rate Sturridge highly, just needs to improve on his decision making sometimes
Guest MattP Posted 19 November 2013 Posted 19 November 2013 If he learns to pass at the right times he'll become a very good player.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 19 November 2013 Posted 19 November 2013 The FA is a very different organisation now with regards to staff to the one that shunned Terry, stripped him of the captaincy and didn't show him any support during the whole race row, isn't it? Him coming out of retirement isn't perhaps as far-fetched as some think. He may be a knobhead but unfortunately he's still head and shoulders above Cahill and Jags, for me.

In '96 we had a choice of Collymore, Shearer, Sheringham, Fowler, Wright and Ferdinand. The trio of Ferdinand, Shearer and Fowler had a total of 84 league goals between the three of them in 95/6. I feel sick.

Fair play to them for being impartial in this case.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 19 November 2013 Posted 19 November 2013 The one he was guilty in? Fair play to them for being impartial in this case. Found not guilty in a court of law - considering there's no concrete, stonewall evidence to suggest it was intended as an insult.
kingfox Posted 19 November 2013 Posted 19 November 2013 Cannot wait to see Cleverley get absolute battered in the middle of the park tonight. Defensively England need to give, Michael Dawson & Joleon Lescott another try, just to see if they perform any better than the likes of Smalling & Jones.
Brainy Posted 19 November 2013 Posted 19 November 2013 And get rid of has beens like Lampard and Gerrard and give Kevin Nolan a chance?
kingfox Posted 19 November 2013 Posted 19 November 2013 And get rid of has beens like Lampard and Gerrard and give Kevin Nolan a chance? Indeed so, and Gareth Barry deserves a recall.

He has a tough job and is trying different players, just hope we have a couple of good games at the World Cup and don't go out limply or in disgrace.
Finnegan Posted 19 November 2013 Posted 19 November 2013 Basically, Mario Gotze and Marco Reus struggle to get in their side but you're starting Tom Cleverly. You're ****ed.

Yep, he has to start changing things due to the ageing players, very tough job when there isn't an abundance of top quality players to choose from.

He won't, we'll be tied down by this "England expects" bollocks for years.
purpleronnie Posted 19 November 2013 Posted 19 November 2013 He won't, we'll be tied down by this "England expects" bollocks for years. very true, it'll be more reasonable to say 'England managers expect'....to have quality players to choose from. We can have the best managers in the world but if the players aren't good enough then there's little that can be done.
