Captain... Posted 6 December 2013 Posted 6 December 2013 JOHN - Me, my family/friends, and this country, have been made no better in any way shape or form by Mandela. Let South Africa make a big deal of it certainly, but he's got **** all to do with us. On that note, South Africa is as big a shithole as it was when he took the presidency. Yes there's racial equality, but it's still a starving, corrupt dump. That's why the media annoy me going on about it all day - especially when something relevant to the country (Norfolk floods) gets ignored. Here's a thought, if all this Mandela talk annoys you so much, why don't you just ignore this thread, you could even start one about the Norfolk floods. It's fine that you don't give a shit about Mandela, but why do is bother you so much that other people do. Baffling.
steveherbe Posted 6 December 2013 Posted 6 December 2013 My mother in law is white Seff Efriken. All I'll say is one mans terrorist is another mans freedom fighter- and I know which one I think he was.

Where do the borders stop for news having any relevance to you? Europe?, UK?, England? East Mids? Leicester? or maybe just the end of your street? Man, I'd hate to be you. South Africa for all it's current faults could easily have been another Zimbabwe, if he had been inclined Mandela could have wreaked a bloody war on his release, the black population would have gone along with whatever he'd said. The fact that he just wanted peaceful reconciliation after years of injustice speaks wonders of the man. He was a good man.
leicsmac Posted 7 December 2013 Posted 7 December 2013 My mother in law is white Seff Efriken. All I'll say is one mans terrorist is another mans freedom fighter- and I know which one I think he was. Come on man, if you really think that about the guy call a spade a spade and don't hide behind innuendo. Most of what I think about the guy has already been said, He was involved in violent resistance, but once he came out of jail he did an incredible thing by forgiving the utterly odious apartheid regime and reconciling with them. SA could so easily have turned into a massive bloodbath, and he was one of the key figures that prevented that. For that alone he deserves recognition. That said, when people remember his life they should remember the good and the bad - and he would be the first one to admit that too.
MooseBreath Posted 7 December 2013 Posted 7 December 2013 Here's a thought, if all this Mandela talk annoys you so much, why don't you just ignore this thread, you could even start one about the Norfolk floods. It's fine that you don't give a shit about Mandela, but why do is bother you so much that other people do. Baffling. Not that easy when it's all over every media outlet all day long like it is Jesus Christ himself who has died or something. Mandela, he did a fine job in South Africa at some point a while back. Apart from all the deaths and that, it was a job well done. Let's not pretend that if it wasn't for the black/white angle and specifically white-guilt that anyone care half as much about Mandela. You can bet your life the death of Aung San Suu Kyi won't necessitate the interruption of sporting schedules thousands of miles away, and why? Because no white-guilt no phooking care. Loads of people have great life stories and loads of people have done fine work on a national and global scale. Singling one guy out just because his achievements contained a race element serves only to highlight how little actual progress has been made. It's a limp-wristed old world sometimes, it really is.
broughtonblue Posted 7 December 2013 Posted 7 December 2013 If it wasn't for the the 'special aka' and Jerrey Dammers he would probably have been in prison longer!!
Beliall Posted 7 December 2013 Posted 7 December 2013 watching the minutes applause ahead of the spurs - sunderlsnd game, my 12 year old sees the big screen and says, whos that? has more than freeman died?
The Year Of The Fox Posted 8 December 2013 Posted 8 December 2013 I'm just glad I didn't go to the match yesterday and avoided being coerced into applauding.
cambridgefox Posted 8 December 2013 Posted 8 December 2013 We wouldn't have Nelson Mandela park. The Trotters wouldn't have Nelson Mandella Houseor Nissan Main Dealer.
EnderbyFox Posted 9 December 2013 Posted 9 December 2013 http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2520662/Neil-Phillips-quizzed-8-HOURS-police-Nelson-Mandela-Twitter-jokes.html
Parafox Posted 9 December 2013 Posted 9 December 2013 Have we got any wreaths on the fence down that park on Welford Road yet?
Captain... Posted 9 December 2013 Posted 9 December 2013 http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2520662/Neil-Phillips-quizzed-8-HOURS-police-Nelson-Mandela-Twitter-jokes.html This is why I hate the Mail. He was not arrested for making a Nelson Mandela joke, the police have refused to say why he was arrested, but if you read the whole article they mention that he was reported for making anti disabled and anti muslim posts on a public web site and has ties to the BNP, as well as there being an on going feud with another man. The headline and the first paragraph read like he retweeted a Mandela joke and got arrrested. This gets people incensed, because if true is disgusting, and spread the story around, but when you read to the end (which I don't always do) there is clearly a lot more to this story. Oh and when does the Mail print this story, September the 10th when he was arrested? September the 30th when he answered bail and was told there was not sufficient evidence to warrant pursuing the case, or December the 9th, 2 months after the original arrest, but just after the death of Nelson Mandela. Can the Mail supporters on here, please tell me they see what is wrong with that.
The God Emperor Posted 9 December 2013 Posted 9 December 2013 Stand up! If you love the mail! We Hate the Sun, we hate the metro. who the f*** are the Gaurdian! binned after Breakfast! you're getting binned after breakfast! AAAAAAAARRGGGHHH
Captain... Posted 9 December 2013 Posted 9 December 2013 Who are the "mail supporters"? Webbo is always very quick to defend the Mail, and says it is just a fashionable liberal left point of view to bash the Mail when it is no worse than the any other mainstream news outlet. Maybe I should have used defender instead of supporter, I was going to say "Mail readers", but I don't know if they actually read it. Webbo isn't the only one and just the first one that springs to mind. Feel free to comment yourself Matt, it is not limited to just those that defend the Mail.
Guest MattP Posted 9 December 2013 Posted 9 December 2013 Well that's obvious isn't it, maximum shock value. Just read the article and I couldn't find anything to try and get worked up about. That lib dem councillor needs shooting mind, what a waste of police time.
Captain... Posted 9 December 2013 Posted 9 December 2013 Well that's obvious isn't it, maximum shock value. But that is my point, the news shouldn't be printed based on shock value, it should be based on relevance and importance, this is an old story which was ignored at the time and now Mandela is dead it is suddenly news, even though he hasn't been charged and it was all done and dusted over a month ago.
Guest MattP Posted 9 December 2013 Posted 9 December 2013 It should be but it isn't, shock sells papers. Hence why the mirror sun and mail sell a load and the times and the independent don't. Sad indication of society.
The God Emperor Posted 9 December 2013 Posted 9 December 2013 Its not necessarily for shock value but most news outlets know their audience so will bend the truth a little to support their views and massage their egos telling them that they are right.
MooseBreath Posted 9 December 2013 Posted 9 December 2013 Nothing like an absolutely ridiculous headline to pull in the braindead punters who can't think for themselves, let's be honest. http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/dec/09/britain-now-developing-country-foodbanks-growth
Webbo Posted 9 December 2013 Posted 9 December 2013 Nothing like an absolutely ridiculous headline to pull in the braindead punters who can't think for themselves, let's be honest. http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/dec/09/britain-now-developing-country-foodbanks-growth You seem to be suggesting that papers other than the Mail have an agenda?
Zingari Posted 9 December 2013 Posted 9 December 2013 Nothing like an absolutely ridiculous headline to pull in the braindead punters who can't think for themselves, let's be honest. http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/dec/09/britain-now-developing-country-foodbanks-growth Britain a "developing country " , that's a good 'un He ought to look up what the word means
Alf Bentley Posted 9 December 2013 Posted 9 December 2013 Nothing like an absolutely ridiculous headline to pull in the braindead punters who can't think for themselves, let's be honest. http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/dec/09/britain-now-developing-country-foodbanks-growth Completely agree. Very poor English, apart from anything: a "developing country" is improving, surely? Britain is not (yet) at a level low enough to be described a developing (or under-developed) country, either, by a very long chalk. As a heading, "Returning to Victorian Britain" would at least have a grain of truth, a sense of trajectory and growing inequality and sufficient genuine provocation to start a meaningful argument. Sod all to do with Mandela, of course, but little more to be said on that score. Will be interesting to see what happens in South Africa over coming years...
21st Century Fox Posted 9 December 2013 Posted 9 December 2013 Nothing like an absolutely ridiculous headline to pull in the braindead punters who can't think for themselves, let's be honest. http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/dec/09/britain-now-developing-country-foodbanks-growth That's clearly an opinion piece rather than a news article. If an headline starts with "Let's admit it..." it's clearly going to be based on the opinion of the writer rather than purported 'news'.
Guest MattP Posted 9 December 2013 Posted 9 December 2013 Sod all to do with Mandela, of course, but little more to be said on that score. Will be interesting to see what happens in South Africa over coming years... Hopefully they can get some genuine opposition and have a real democracy now he's gone. Maybe they can vote elsewhere and get in a government that will free them from the shackles of the anc and the nation can build towards being a prosperous one. Then maybe take the lead in fighting against dictators liked Mugabe rather than supporting them.
