Banks Posted 21 December 2013 Posted 21 December 2013 Awful news, obviously something isn't quite right with England. First Trott and now Swann. You'll be missed Swanny.
Alexikokopops Posted 22 December 2013 Posted 22 December 2013 One of England's main tactics this past few years has been to use Swanny to hold an end up while we rotate our three seamers at the other end. The only blessing is that Stokes is showing promise with the ball (as much as any England bowler can after that second innings in Perth) as well as the bat so we can look into a five man attack, which at least reduces the need for the spinner to hold an end so much. I'm looking for any positives, mind. Swann will be missed both on and off the pitch. Spinner is the one position where we haven't particularly got anyone coming through the ranks (unless we pick Kerrigan again.........) and Swann was genuinely World Class in his pomp.
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 22 December 2013 Posted 22 December 2013 Some would say Swann had quit bowling before the start of this series any way.
bmt Posted 22 December 2013 Posted 22 December 2013 Am I the only one thinking he is an utter twat for this?
Aus Fox Posted 22 December 2013 Posted 22 December 2013 Am I the only one thinking he is an utter twat for this? Yes you are, a true legend for England and decides his body can no longer hold up, so rather than hanging on to get more aps for selfish reasons as many others have done in the past, he holds his hands up and says time to give someone else a go. Well played Swannie.... Good luck... You will be missed

davieG Posted 22 December 2013 Posted 22 December 2013 There was talk of him being dropped for the next test, let's hope this is not some mardy reaction to that scenario.
The People's Hero Posted 22 December 2013 Posted 22 December 2013 You don't become a bad player overnight, but Swann's contribution with ball and bat has been awful this series. If his heart is no longer in it, its the right decision. He's been a top player for England. The only real concern is the lack of any real consistently strong spinners either in the England A / U19 set ups, the development squads or the county game.
Corky Posted 22 December 2013 Posted 22 December 2013 At 34, with elbow injuries, it's probably the right time to go. He's had a dreadful series and won't recover the form of a few years ago. He was a world class operator, and England haven't had many spinners at that level. He's done pretty much all he can for England now, won Ashes series and won in India, the World Cup was maybe the last thing but that is two years away. Better to go now where we have a chance to look at the replacements, just a shame he hasn't gone out on a high point.

cambridgefox Posted 22 December 2013 Posted 22 December 2013 Bring back Shaun UdalBring back my future sister in laws step brother.Tuffers!( distant humblebrag)Swann retiring is a big worry,he is 34 and has done a cracking job.
Bobby Hundreds Posted 22 December 2013 Posted 22 December 2013 Keeps his sub 30 test bowling average too (currently on 29.96). Although these are definitely not linked...
Guest MattP Posted 22 December 2013 Posted 22 December 2013 Genuine legend, have a great retirement Swanny.
Bobby Hundreds Posted 22 December 2013 Posted 22 December 2013 Out of interest, when is the IPL auction?
Swarles Barkley Posted 22 December 2013 Posted 22 December 2013 Dont watch county much. Are there any decent spin bowlers coming up,I know Kerrigan is meant to be one. any others?
The People's Hero Posted 22 December 2013 Posted 22 December 2013 Dont watch county much. Are there any decent spin bowlers coming up,I know Kerrigan is meant to be one. any others? Kerrigan is one of the names in the frame, but for me, he's not good enough. Needs a bit more county cricket yet, but of course they are likely to 'blood' someone, ready or not quite soon and he's seemingly well thought of (or more accurately, perhaps, was well thought of) by the ECB/selectors. I try to watch as much as I can, which is ordinarily highlights or the odd bit here and there on Sky. I'll put together a list of the potential candidates at some point. Generally though, if you look at the England 'youth/U19' set ups, you'll find there aren't many spinners at all.
Leicesterpool Posted 22 December 2013 Posted 22 December 2013 He's been poor for some time to be fair, time to move on for both! I actually think these withdraws are good it means we can look to rebuild, please say Cook is next :xmastongue:

Jimothy Posted 22 December 2013 Posted 22 December 2013 I hope you are joking. He's almost certainly not. He probably wants Kevin Nolan to be opening batsmen and captain, and Ben Foster as wicketkeeper.
Bert Posted 22 December 2013 Posted 22 December 2013 He's had a swipe, already. Reckon it's mainly aimed at Pietersen. Think Swann needs to look a bit closer to home when he says that some people are so far up their own arse.

Captain... Posted 23 December 2013 Posted 23 December 2013 I suspect he was probably thinking about retiring after this series, seeing as it is now over then it makes sense to go now and give someone some time to bed in before the next series. God knows who though, Monty? I really hope not, love the guy but would rather have an Ashley Giles, solid reliable dependable and decent with the bat than a Monty who is a better spinner but laughably bad at every other discipline.
