vardy has won most of the penaltys let's say he won the penaltys and took them and would probs score them that would mean he would have 20+ goals and nugent would have 4-5 , look at it like that and nugent not doing so good

Or you could look at it for how it really is and see combined that Vardy and Nugent as a partnership have scored 26 goals which is 46% of our goals this season. And assisted 12 which is 21%. (this doesn't include Vardy winning numerous penalties)

Nugent alone has been involved either with an assist or scored in 44% of Leicester's goals this season.

Or are you one of these 'penalties don't count' fans?

I'll say it again. Goals scored from penalties are a crap statistic to use to judge how a player is performing. I don't care how many 'funny' jokes like "omgz do goals scored from headers not count too now?" are made. Make all the shitty jokes to detract from a sensible discussion if you like, I don't really care. Footballers should be scoring at least 75% of penalties taken, because they're not that difficult. If Vardy had taken the penalties, then statistically he would most likely be on a 20 goal season already.

The difficult part is earning the penalty, because to do that you generally have to be in a good scoring opportunity with the ball, and the opponent have to take you down. If you said to me "Nugent had earned 8 penalties" then I would be bloody impressed, because earning them is difficult. Scoring them is expected. In scoring the penalties, Nugent isn't really doing anything that we wouldn't expect any other player to be able to do, and he hasn't earned the penalty. That's why it isn't impressive, or particularly relevant when using goals to discuss a players season - especially when penalties make up more than 50% of his goal tally. If penalty taking was such an impressive attribute, we'd still play Gallagher.

Now, I will say that Nugent's link up play has been generally good, and his assist total is impressive (though people desperately claiming that he got the assist for Vardy's goal on wed? I mean lol!?!). But I'm not yet convinced whether it justifies his woeful goal scoring record this season. People easily jump to say "well we're first in the league when Nugents playing, he must be good enough" not understanding that this argument is very flawed logic - correlation necessarily doesn't imply causation. If he'd scored his sitter on wednesday, then we'd be even further ahead.

To sum up this long rant. Nugent hasn't been a bad "player" this season, but his striking has been woeful enough that another player probably deserves a chance to have a run out. If he scores today (or has an amazing performance) then I'll cut him some slack for now, but if not I really think Wood should get a run out.

We have scored 56 league goals this season, so far and to be honest I don't care how many were penalties or in fact who scored them! Why? because we are top of the league and we all should be enjoying it.

As for dropping Nugent for Wood etc. I am more than happy for NP to make that decision, it's him with the finger on the pulse, it's also him that is facing the chop at the end of the season if he gets it all wrong.

I think Nugent and Vardy have swopped roles this season. Last year Vardy was dropping deep and Nugent was up top. This season Nugent is playing the 10 role and Vardy the out-and-out striker role and its worked.

Hence more assists less goals. He's doing a great job for the team and he should not judged by just a goals tally but his all round contribution. Football is about teamwork and pairings especially up front.

Lineker and Smith

Dalglish and Rush

Heskey and Owen

Gray and Sharp

Beadsley and Lineker

I'm not saying Vardy and Nugent are on a par with pairings above, but they do seem to gel. Whats most important is the team and we keep winning whoever gets the goals.

What you say is correct;  however, you don't address the main complaint, which is Nugent's squandering of good chances.

An earlier contributor said that when we start to lose points because of Nugent's shortcomings then maybe something should be done about it.  Well, in the last 2 games alone we would have gained an extra 4 points if Nugent had put away sitters.  The main complaint about him is that he just hasn't been clinical enough, and that maybe Wood or Phillips would be.  To point this out isn't to "slag Nugent off", but simply to make an observation.

To put this complaint in perspective, there's no doubt that Nugent's all-round play has been very good and his partnership with Vardy sensational.  It's also true that the non-clinicalness of our finishing has been spread throughout the team (but we expect our strikers to be more reliable in that area than other team members).

I think Nugent has, on balance, done very well and 17 goals is a decent return at this stage of the season, even if many of them have come from the spot. I'm not so concerned, looking at the season as a whole, with his efficiency in front of goal. My concern is that he has not played well recently. Our ambition is not to finish 6th or 5th as in previous seasons, it is to win the division and win it by a margin. If we are to do that then he will either have to pick up his game within the next week or so, or make way for Wood.

I think it is reasonable of people to look towards what happened to him last season, to consider how he tends to play in bursts of form and to bear in mind that he is a 28 / 29 year old striker who has played most of his career in second tier football and never hit 20 goals. He will be well aware that he has to do better and has to overcome his recent dip in form if he wishes to end this season (and go into next) as a first choice striker. There's no point in arguing otherwise. But he has earned his chance to do this.

Why are people moaning about individual players??????? Look at where the team is in the league!! I don't care if Nugent sets up a deck chair and watches endless repeats of Only Fools and Horse on the pitch if it means we are top of the league! Stop moaning about Nugent, Vardy, Dyer, the club announcer, the guy who serves the pies at half time, the cubicle in the East Stand that doesn't flush. Jesus Christ.

Without wanting to point out the obvious, you don't simply sign a set of players on mass, or train or play them in precisely the same way. A consideration of individuals is important. After all, had Lewis played midfield ahead of Muzzy in 02-03 we wouldn't have gone up. And, in Nugent's defence, had he left last summer and we been left with Chris Wood up front, with his injuries and mixed form, we'd be unlikely to be top this season.

Yes, a penalty is 50 - 50, you either score or you miss, that is 50-50. Please tell me you understand this?

And, yes, lets wait until it costs us before acting...

A) you know **** all about probability

B) on that basis an open play goal is easy - it's 50/50 - you either score or you don't

Christ!

If people don't value David Nugent in our current success it's over. The forum might as well finish now!

**** sake, I hate all this "oh he scored in one game, so you've been proved wrong".

Yes, Nugent is a cracking player. Yes, his link up play has been great and I'm over the moon that he scored today. His finishing still hasn't been great this season though, one tap-in from 6 yards doesn't "prove me wrong". And I'm not a Nugent basher - I just think his finishing hasn't been as good this season as previous seasons, and hasn't been anywhere near Vardy's standard. I'm not fickle enough to change my opinion based on one game.

But god forbid anyone put any criticism towards a player without being a "hater". You wonder what the forum is for, considering opinions and debate are frowned upon, and the only thing that seems to be allowed is being a happy clapping sycophant. So, thanks to those who actually engage their brains enough to type well-reasoned logical arguments (the people who put forth the claim that his inclusion is justified based on his link-up play/assists make a valid argument). However to those who are like "OMGZ wat r u moaning about we r top" or "haha headers wont count nxt lolz" - you are all idiots.

I rest my case
