I love Nugent and want him to do well all the time. but he's so off at the moment and Wood deserves a chance! good solid point tonight! happy fox!
bluesbrothers Posted 19 February 2014 Posted 19 February 2014 While I'm a big fan of Dave, I do agree that he needs a kick up the arse - the sitter he dragged wide speaks volumes for his rusty form at present, and he maybe needs some appearences off the bench to freshen up - it worked last year, as he was injured then came back with a flourish - remember his brace in his first game back against Derby? Besides, Wood deserves another run out. He's never really had a go alongside Vardy, and his ability to hold the ball up might make them compliment each other perfectly.On another note, will Konch's dismissal and the likely return of Schlupp to the fold see Gary Taylor Fletcher return to the bench? I still stand by that he was very hard done by to lose his place in the first 18 - he barely put a foot wrong in his appearences and set up some vital goals.I can see it now - Last 20 minutes up front with Phillips and GTF - the machine, comin atcha with a Geriatric Hatrick.

Their defence will have the fact he scores against them in the back of their minds, and would be a good sub.
Freeman's Wharfer Posted 19 February 2014 Posted 19 February 2014 I think the problem is that with our strike pairing we play a very clear system of one player on the shoulder of the last man and one man a little deeper. Everytime Phillips comes on he replaces Nugent in the deeper role, either directly or Nugent moves further forward in place of Vardy if he's the man to make way (ala Leeds away). That's why Wood is seeing such little action at the moment, because Phillips is the man coming on and Vardy has been so good this often that he often warrants staying on. To drop Nugent from the start would mean that Phillips would have to start and he's not here to be playing full matches. If it were Vardy out of form we'd see Wood in the side as the furthest forward of the pairing.

As poor a season Nugent has had in terms of outfield goals, and as poor as he was in front of goal again tonight, he has yet another assist to his name. The collectiveness of us as a unit and the way in which Nuge and Vardy make runs for each other and to bring others into play is a huge part of how we play. That is why i was against people who thought the answer was to just bring in a Jordan Rhodes or another proven finisher to solve our so called lack of finishing.
Guest MarshallForEngland Posted 20 February 2014 Posted 20 February 2014 I like Nuge and think he works very hard, and I have been sympathetic recently because he was getting slated for missing "sitters" that were actually very difficult chances. But after that set-up from Drinkwater that ball should have been smashing the back of the net, he dragged his shot horribly and that's exactly the sort of goal you'd expect Nugent to score. Loitering in the penalty area waiting for the ball to drop in the right place, he'd done everything right except score. I think we might have seen Wood against Forest had Konch not got sent off. That forced substitution meant someone was inevitably going to miss out.

Fickle bunch Not really - I'd be happy, but his goal scoring record has clearly not been good enough this season, given the chances he has had. Then again, I'm not one of the morons that thinks scoring 10 penalties is just as easy as scoring 10 goals from open play.
dpjfox Posted 20 February 2014 Posted 20 February 2014 Nuge seems to be going through a quiet spell, both in goals and performances but its Ipswich next and the trend is , we play Ipswich/ Nuge scores, they are well aware of this factand hopefully the "50 landmark" will be achieved on Saturday

Iwan is a Welshman Posted 20 February 2014 Posted 20 February 2014 Sometimes he does look a bit off it but his goalscoring record cannot be argued with - irrelevant of how many penalties there has been (KP showed last night they're not easy to put away!) As for the Pro-Wood comments - aside from that run when we signed him twelve months ago he's not shown a great deal of promise. I know he's been out injured this season but people are quick to forget that he was also culpable during our detrimental run of form at the end of last season. Watch that fantastic Knocky goal at the City Ground which put us in the play-offs. I know ultimately Wood did the right thing by passing to Knocky but any confident striker would have had a go themselves. I'm not criticising Wood for passing, I'm just saying it shows his frame of mind at the time. The grass is greener I think for some people. Nuge is the best man for the job and with the teams coming up he deserves to retain his starting place. Another point - those saying that Wood may have come on last night. We brought a striker on. If NP had a great deal of confidence in Chris Wood then it would have been him on the pitch and not KP. Personally I'm glad Pearson brought KP in and I'm glad he uses him in those situations ahead of Chris Wood. I think he might be the difference at the end of the season.

They thought the movement and link up play between Nugent and Vardy last night was the best they've seen from a visiting team this season. Nugent played a huge part in Vardy's goal. Yet another assist in a good season for him. He did miss a really really good chance last night, but guess what, he's human. He didnt do it on purpose! Otherwise he had a decent game against two huge centre halves - our two centre halves did play a lot of long balls last night. Nugent did fine and is guaranteed to score on Saturday
