A thread for some Nugent praise - two goals away from scoring 50 for Leicester, great return for two and a half seasons.

Who was the last City striker to score 50 for us in the first or second division? I know Fryatt scored 50 but many were in league one.

For those who will bang on about how many of those are penalties... It's his first season EVER being the main penalty taker for any team. Got to give him praise to step up and convert them so confidently.

Tell you what, if the Watford incident last season never happened, we wouldn't be four points clear at top. That did him a world of good.

Good player, pleasing to have him around. Works hard for the team and never stops. Great movement, good finisher and actually decent in the air for his height. Scores in the big games as well.

In regards to Fryatt, it doesn't matter what league it is. You can only score against what you're playing against.

Does it really matter how many were from penalties?

I'm sure Man Utd fans didn't care how many of Van Nistelrooy's goals were penalties during the 00s...

There are maybe more relevant/recent examples than the above but you get my point...

He is starting to look like he did in the first half of last season. He has already equalled last seasons total of 14 I fully expect he will score 20+ this season

Scoring lots of penalties isn't a problem - the problem is when he isn't scoring aside from penalties, and not performing well.

That isn't the case at the moment though, he's playing very well. Long may it continue!

It's worth noting that he's also one of the top assisters in the division this season as well as top scorers and he actually tops the combined goals + assists table over any player in the division.

Thank you... well spotted, shows when he hasn't been scoring in open play he still contributed...

There is so much more to David Nugent than his scoring record, penalties etc. His link up play is very good, he has good movement and can be seen on flanks helping the team create opportunities. So he does a lot of good stuff that goes unnoticed by many forum contributors. His goal record is good, his penalty record is good (only 2 misses from 12? with 1/1 last season). Should always be on the teamsheet and form vs Derby with Vardy was top class.

What a lot of people don't realise is that more than anything he is a team player.

A great asset to the team, and in the dressing room as well as being our top scorer every season he's been here. Nigel likes him, he likes it here.

What's not to like?

Nuge is quality, he's come under fire from some fans and I can't see why, as Bert says he is very much a team player and is consistently our top goal scorer.

Agree + for free transfer, even with sizeable wages, I think he has earned his place in the squad and been a wise enough investment for the club. I still think he has an innate level of quality some of the other strikers we have do not. Imo Nugent has the ability to take it to the next level when needed and has played on much bigger stages and that's probably one of the reasons he is still here.

Nugent is a great example of why a striker needs to be more than just a goal scorer. Especially in modern day football. Look at Ings and the other fella at Burnley lol. They are both constantly looking out for each other, coming deep to get the ball and setting each other up with chances. However good a 'finisher' Yakubu was, his all-round game was laboured. Nugent and Vardy are quick, busy and a major nuisance to defences. This makes a big difference.

Of course, the best strikers are the ones who are both work horses AND finishers. Negredo is a good contemporary example.
