When do you know when to quit gaming?

I have been musing about quitting PS3, I have been a gamer ever since I was little but nowdays I only have time for FIFA 14 and it is now getting rather repetitive to the point where I started to wonder why am I playing on this anymore and whether if my time can be reinvested in something more valuable or something more educated. I want to learn more about history or politics or life in the general.

I have started some other hobbies to the point if I was to accommodate them all, I would go to bed at 12.30am-1.00am on a working day which is not too good in my book. I just fancied listening to you all opinions at what point did you quit gaming, why did you quit it, what did you replaced it with and whether if you feel better for it?

Knowing FT, I probably would get laughed at but I'm hoping for some nuggets of wisdom if I am lucky!

I've never been a massive gamer. I get bored easy. The only games I play are Fifa, GTA and Football Manager (obviously that's PC).

But surely it's like anything, you get to a point when you don't need it anymore? Yeah, get a hobby. I've never been a massive fan of books, but I'm wanting to start reading more. You'll probably soon find you don't miss it... When I'm at Uni, like now, I leave my PS3 at home and don't miss it at all.

Just be thankful that it is just PS3 gaming you are into, gambling and other forms of online real time gaming can be a lot harder to quit.

Games are just a distraction, I got to the point where FIFA was almost meditational for me, I had play it so much it was just a relaxing repition of moves and tactics, that I could play it on auto pilot and still win everything with Leicester, there were the odd games when things would go wrong, but in general I was very relaxed after a few hours of FIFA. Unless I was playing my mates then it got very competitve.

Other games give you the sense of completion at achieving something, and I have also been one of those that needs to go back and find everything and finish it 100%, which can be time consuming, but rewarding. Others are actually a joy to play. But now I play very few games, mainly because I don't have a console any more, I don't miss it, but I do enjoy going round a mates every know and again and playing games. I have probably replaced it with wasting my time on here (this is where someone offers to buy me a PS4 so I'll bugger off).

Everyone needs distraction in their life, and playing games of whatever sort are important and much better than just vegging out in front of the TV, but it can be an expensive and time consuming hobby, and just stay away from any online multiplayer games that reward being active and you can check on your phone while you are supposed to be in a meeting at work, or require you setting an alarm to get you up at the right time to launch/defend an attack. They are true time vampires.

As you get older (sorry, I dunno how old you are)  it doesn't really become a question of wanting to play games or not, more a question of having less time.  Me personally I go through phases (and i'm 36 now).  Sometimes I can put the console down for months at a time and not touch it and others I can go on for a few hours most nights.  But to answer your question, it certainly doesn't do any harm to stick it in the cupboard for a few months and forget about it.  I got myself a Kubo a few months back, my first ever ebook reader and that stopped me from playing for a hell of a while, and thats basically just books!.

When you don't enjoy it? I play games because I have fun and it's social. If you want to quit and do something more productive then do it.

I think it's a gradual thing really - I never made a conscious effort to cut down or stop playing. I used to love massive RPGs like Fallout, Oblivion etc, but now that I work a pretty stressful job 8-5 and commute a couple of hours each day, I just find I'm not really that interested in spending my limited free time playing games anymore - I barely scratched the surface of Skyrim when that came out. Don't get me wrong, every now and then there will be a title that I'll pick up and play through for maybe a week - I spent most evenings on GTA V for about a week and a half when that came out. I still plan on getting a PS4 and buying a few titles for that, and I still play a decent amount of football manager.

For me, on weekday evenings I like to see my girlfriend, get out and do stuff, especially as I live in London. And at the weekend, it just feels like a waste to spend a whole free day staring at a computer screen, when that's essentially what I do all week at work.

I'm pretty sure it's just growing up and my priorities changing. Gaming will always be a hobby for me though.

you dont need to quit gaming, its not a hobby, its a past time, would you quit watching films because you are bored of one? play less if you want to achieve more

I find time to have the odd game, but my major gaming finished about 5 years ago when I started to buck my ideas up and became aspirational,

Safe to say I have grown up a huge amount, and found time to dedicate myself to a career in business, and without having let go of the staying up all night with mates gaming phase, I would not have experienced the things I have been so fortunate to experience,

Like having runners at royal ascot and beating the queens filly in the ribblesdale, Being invited to the house of lords, and watching a dear old friend of mind purchase a world record "Picadilly circus" for £6,000,000 (with buyers premium) happily telling people he wanted to stop bidding at £4m and I egged him on to £5.5m lol

With the same man, opening up so many options for me in my future...

Now this is not down to just hard work, I was MASSIVELY fortunate to meet him,

But there was a time 3 years before where i'd rather play on my ps3 than anything else, and I would get home from my first job at 5pm and play until 12 knowing I had to be up at 5...

Taking that leap to stop matured me IMO,

and I found greater things are there for you to explore and see and do without it...

It's quite an extreme example tbh, But it's one that I am proud of, not many people have experienced what I have at my age, And I cannot stress how lucky I was in that.

But it takes a lot of hard work and DEDICATION, and that cannot be achieved on a ps3...

My Ex bought my PS3 for me, and I wont be getting a PS4, there are plenty of better things to invest into!

My theory is this... Give up my early manhood fun, give up parties, give up friends who are not worth your time and focus on the few that are, Give up holidays, Work hard... work very very hard, and the real holiday starts in an early retirement..

You see most teens nowadays with the same old shit "Im gonna go college and do beauty" then when they've done that "Im gonna go travelin" then "im gonna take a gap year"

Before they know it they are 23 and have a beauty qualification, and have hardly any options to make a career... then end up having to work to the age of 65+ (It's the same with most males too) - Which is each to their own and whatever makes them happy, not me personally

I saw a good quote from T.I "You see these young teens now, They have nothing in their life to be proud of, no career. they're going out every weekend, my question is this, What are you all celebrating?"

Again all extreme examples, but my point is this,

I used to game all the time in my early teens, giving up that and focusing on my career and earning money, was the best decision I ever made, Now I can afford to spend a few games on fifa...

You'll miss a lot of opportunities playing it!

My focus is money, if thats greed, then its greed... I want more all the time, so thats me personally, you want to learn history? LEARN IT, you want to learn about politics? LEARN ABOUT POLITICS.

Lee, just out of curiosity - with your omnipresent online presence in recent weeks and months, what field are you exactly working in? What's your job?

Because my take is, if you were as hardworking as you're advertising, you wouldn't be posting on here (at all).

Long story MC, If you were really curious I could message you...

I'm 26, loved gaming since I was a teenager and still do now. For me it's something to pass the time. The missis moans about me going on it but I don't care. Until I get to the point of being bored of gaming, I'll keep playing. Only game I ever play is Fifa 14 UT. Looking at getting a laptop or PC so I can start getting stuck back into FM. Haven't played it for a few years, the missis will be so miserable and unhappy, but fvck her lol

Ohh and also I've been looking at getting a PS4 since it's been released. Me and the missis had a full blown argument, just before Christmas, about the idea of me getting one lol

I don't think you choose to quit gaming, it just happens. If I think about it I haven't played a game on my Xbox since start of December, and before that it was July! I almost only use my Xbox for watching DVDs. Haven't bought FIFA 14 or anything, and not even wanting to buy the new console.

Agree completely with this post, it does just creep up on you, I used to be a massive online COD player and loved it, now I am 46 I never play online anymore, trying to compete with kids and their fast reactions became impossible unless I camped, I then would receive abusive messages for doing so. I have not bought a PS 4 still enjoy playing single player games occasionally. Tend to watch DVDs now in the time I used to spend gaming. Finally got around to watching the Sopranos and loving it.

If it's got to the point where you don't enjoy it any more, then just put the controller down and go and do something else for a bit. In a week's,/month's/year's time you might say "fancy a game of FIFA I do" or you may never touch it again. I don't really see the need to 'quit' outright.

I used to play all the FIFAs, CoDs, GTAs etc from when I was about 8 or 9 until probably about a year ago. I couldn't afford FIFA 13 and thought i'd be gutted I couldn't get online and play with my mates but I wasn't really arsed because I got a job and then didn't have much time for it really. I still play (very occasionally) GTA and FIFA 13, haven't even considered paying £40 for the new FIFA, which I'd say is when you know you aren't really all that into it anymore.

I still go round mates and beat all them on FIFA every now and then, or if we're going out of a night go round early afternoon for FIFA and drinks before heading out. I don't have FIFA 14 nor do I play FIFA 13 very much at all but I'll still always win :D

Didn't realise there were rules about this kind of thing.

I don't play as much as I used to, but I still enjoy the right kind of game (usually something with a strong story like The Last of Us or the Elder Scrolls games) and I'm in my mid 40s. My dad plays games on the PC such as Civ, FM and Total War.

I've recently really got into playing board games again - there are many good ones beyond the traditional Monopoly, Cluedo, Scrabble that most people have - which are great fun as they bring people together socially.

One last thing though. Cap PF is 100% right on MMOs!

Lot of interesting posts on here- some reflected my thoughts exactly, I agree, gaming is not something that you can just 'quit' however I know if I keep PS3 and I might be tempted to play on it out of routine rather than excitement and that say it all really. With it gone, I would be more inclined to pursue other stuff which I have done already and will have more time to myself and to be more likely have a good night of kip!

No disrespect to any of gamers on here, I do agree there is no cut-off age and it is not weird for fully grown males to be still gaming into their 40s as CPF summed it up, it is much much better than just vegging out on the sofa.
