Yeah to be fair, Ashley Cole has played in two of Chelsea's toughest games defensively in the past 5 days and has looked brilliant, especially for a man who hasn't played a lot of football this season.

Roy has a real dilemma at left back, is Baines the first choice? Does he take Shaw for experience, the lad was in PFA Team of the Year so you would think he would go. I like the idea of taking three left backs and having one of them at right back if needs be but lets be honest, it isn't going to happen. I would take just two left backs and one right back anyway, with Phil Jones going to be in the squad he can be the second choice right back.

I really want to know the squad now, it's funny how it seems that we are the only nation where the 23 man squad is such a big deal and massive news.

Ashley Cole proving if you want a defender to defend he's our man.

Correct. Him in for Uruguay/Italy. Baines in for Costa Rica.

Why not take 3 left backs and 1 right back? Everybody seems to be agreed that we are ridiculously strong at left back and pretty weak at right back.

Given that Azpilicueta has this season become the latest in a long line of right-footed right-backs filling in and excelling at left back (see also Irwin, Dennis) I don't see why the reverse shouldn't be a possibility with a left-footed full back playing right back, particularly in an age of inside-out wingers where defenders are often forced onto their weaker side.

Ashley Cole in particular would be an option, given that he offers more defensively than going forward, and I think it's probably the attacking rather than the defending which suffers from having a wrong-footed full back.

I agree with you. I think it's harder than moving from one wing to another but you'd like to think with the blatant imbalance of ability that it'd be something we've considered.

Because using a left-footed left-back at right back is worse than using a right-footed right-back at left-back.

Left-footed players are all left foot.

They never have to use their right foot because they always get to play on left since there are less left-footers around.

Whereas right-footed players often have to play on the left at some point or another due to competition/lack of left-footed players so they are more comfortable doing it.

I had to read that more than once lol

Can see where your coming from. Im left footed and im terrible with my right foot (some would say im also terrible with my left foot)

Maybe not a terrible shout to be fair but you would still think at some point someone like Cole will have played on the right?

If he's no better there than Johnson then simply keep Johnson there.

I always thought Flanagan was a right back who's been sent out on the left?

Yeah Flanagan's a right back by trade hence the "Red Cafu" nickname, hopefully he gets a little more time there; can see him and Shaw making the full-back berths their own for a long, long time to come.

Connor Wickham can't force his way into the squad in the next three games for Sunderland can he?

I say this as there was a number of people discussing it on Twitter yesterday and I heard someone ring on TalkSport to say the same thing.

Flavour of the month at the moment, similar to Jason Puncheon.

Yeah that's what I thought as well, but he is doing it at the right time of the season!

Seems Hodgson knows his 23 man squad now anyway, according to Sky.

He won't go, if Hodgson knows his squad already then Wickham isn't in there. Quite worrying if Roy actually does know and Wilshire is in there.

He's one of the better English midfielders.

On what basis? The lad isn't even playing at the minute for his club side.

I couldn't believe Wilshire he had played 23 league games for Arsenal this season, apart from that team goal v Norwich (I think?) I can't think of anything stand out that Jack Wilshire has done? Not played well for England since returning to squads.

Yeah, actually, he is a must for the England squad.

gerrard, henderson, barkley, lallana, barry, lampard, drinkwater, james, er there's probably some more obvious ones i've missed too who are all better than wilshere

Keep looking at the squad - The best in England is just not equating to 'world class' - sad but true. Hopefully the lads will surprise us but I can only see three 'nailed on' players that I would say are 'world class' and another one or two with the potential to be so.

First matches kick off at 5pm though - that's a lot of divorce business this summer, coming to a solicitor near you.

I think you are being very generous, do we have any world class players?

You heard it here first.

Tomorrow night could be the perfect time to watch a football match and understand why England need John Terry back in the squad.

Only Gerrard is better than Wilshere.

Haha. For a minute there I thought you suggested Wilshere is our second best midfielder.

lol at kiddy level maybe, most professionals should be reasonable competent on both sides. Nothing to do with what foot you are anyway it's your ability to adapt your game in a unfamiliar surrounding against a strong winger at international level, not "if you can use your left foot" lol this isn't Sunday League.

Although I agree we should stick to taking recognized right backs instead of experimenting with left backs there even if our options are terrible.
