Hungry Hungry Fox Posted 31 January 2014 Posted 31 January 2014 Compare the love some fans have for him with the hate some fans had(still have?) for Nugent Yep, logic just left the building
Iwan is a Welshman Posted 31 January 2014 Posted 31 January 2014 Good move for all involved. Best of luck to the guy. I imagine Rosler's a good manager to work under.
65RosesFox Posted 31 January 2014 Posted 31 January 2014 Let's be honest if Wigan come above us this season, and Waghorn scores 15 goals for them we will only have ourselves to blame not the fact we let Waghorn go on loan to them. We're 26 points ahead of them, if fans think they are a threat to us then the whole league are!
Mark_w Posted 31 January 2014 Posted 31 January 2014 Compare the love some fans have for him with the hate some fans had(still have?) for Nugent Yep, logic just left the building You'll not have an easy task finding anyone who thinks Martyn Waghorn is better than David Nugent. The support he has from a section of our fans is pretty obviously because of his attitude. Although I don't really know why anyone would actively hate Nugent.
Mark_w Posted 31 January 2014 Posted 31 January 2014 WARNING - Tedious Mark_w Post About Martyn Waghorn. For the benefit of lurking Wigan fans (I ventured over to their forum and some have decided he's rubbish based on posts in here and his goal scoring record so) I'm going to repeat what I've been saying for the last few years. Feel free to skip it. Martyn Waghorn did a very good job during his loan spell at the club, in the Championship. Injury and miss-use (being played on the wing when he isn't a winger) has prevented him from performing to the level we saw during his loan spell. However his performances in the run of around ten games he had for us last year and the reception from the Millwall fans on their forum after his loan spell would suggest that he is very capable of recapturing that form. It's not going to be for us because this season Jamie Vardy has proven that he offers as much as Waghorn in terms of work rate with a superior goal scoring record and with Nugent and Wood as well, it's pretty clear that Waghorn isn't going to get a look in and it would be a very silly decision on his part to sign a new contract with the club. His commitment and passion for football rather than his ability are the reason he's revered by a surprisingly large number of Leicester fans, myself included. But that doesn't mean he isn't capable of becoming a very good footballer. If he is given a prolonged run as a striker by a team in the Championship, for the first time since his loan spell, then there's every chance that he can perform to level he did during his loan spell and at the age of 24 there's still plenty of time for him to develop and improve. Unfairly written off by some of our fans, I imagine because of impatience, an inability to recognize that he simply hasn't started enough games to make the same impact he did while on loan (fewer starts since signing permanently than he made during his loan spell and those have been in short bursts rather than one prolonged run) and increased expectation because we pretty clearly paid way too much for him. Will be an incredible free signing for anyone who takes him on in the summer and gives him game time, if he gets that I'm sure we will see the Waggy of old, I think we'll be at a level where we won't need to kick ourselves about it, but if he does succeed elsewhere then I'm sure that many people will be saddened that circumstances have conspired against him time and time again since he signed permanently. I really hope he gets his career back on track and is given the opportunity to show to those who have written him off that he is capable of once again reaching the level he was at three years ago and there's no reason he can't surpass it in the future. Good luck to him, clearly cares about playing football and gave me a lot of great memories during what was probably my favourite season supporting Leicester City until this year (I'm young). If Pearson hadn't left and we had still been able to sign him then I'm sure things would have been very different, I'm delighted that we've got Pearson back and are on the up again. Hope that the same can happen for Waggy on loan at Wigan and in the future, hopefully at a club that isn't Millwall. Not the greatest player to play for Leicester City during my life time but easily one of the most likeable. Note: I'll try to keep my obsession to myself while he's not at Leicester City, can't promise.
Hungry Hungry Fox Posted 31 January 2014 Posted 31 January 2014 No way would we of paid 3mill for him if nige hadn't off left, which probably means we wouldn't of brought him at all
Wink Posted 31 January 2014 Posted 31 January 2014 Good luck to the lad! Can't fault his attitude, but just the same player he was when he was on loan with us. Waste of £3 million but that's football unfortunately.
Harry - LCFC Posted 31 January 2014 Posted 31 January 2014 He'll (inexplicably) be remembered fondly by many. You're walking blindfolded if you can't understand why fans are thankful for what he did, just take a look at some of the posts above. Thank you, Martyn.
Happy Fox Posted 31 January 2014 Author Posted 31 January 2014 He was f**King shocking for the fee we paid for him, but he was a trier and gave his all and that is all you can ask.
sylofox Posted 31 January 2014 Posted 31 January 2014 Hmm. Apart from being a fan of Waggy is this a good move? I can easily see Wigan being in the mix come may I really hope they are. That should mean they have taken points from teams chasing us. Oh n hope he scores a shite load. That will make him un dropable but he can't play against us.
Kitchandro Posted 31 January 2014 Posted 31 January 2014 Good luck to him. I recall his first match for us, coming on as a half-time sub against Swansea in our first match back in the second tier, and he was brilliant. I think he'll do OK at Wigan. Yeh I'll always remember that game. When he came on I was like 'who?' I'd never even heard that we'd signed this guy. But he looked the dog's bollocks. Then again so did N'Guessan There's no doubt when he's at his best he's a joy to watch, and a good player at this level. Maybe Mark_w has a fair point, given a run of games and less pressure he may well be a star in this league.

Thank you, Martyn. I must be .... what did he do???? He's a div1 footballer struggling in a championship side .... so runs around a lot. If running around a lot is all that you expect for £3m then sign me. The guy is a professional footballer .... and a very poor one ..... However hard he tries he's a total waste of money and did absolutely nothing for the club.

He cared a hell of a lot more than most of our players in the last ten years, always gave 100% and I believe it genuinely hurt him when things went wrong for both himself and the club. Is that a good enough reason to thank him or does he have to be a world-beater for anyone to like him?

When you consider the 12 goals he scored in the 09/10 season I think it's fair to say we'd have had a tough time getting a play off spot without him that season. It's not the sort of thing you can dismiss IMO. I agree with you to some extent, I don't think he's good enough for us either but at the same time I think it's pretty ridiculous to say he's done nothing for us.
TJB-fox Posted 1 February 2014 Posted 1 February 2014 Scored some absolute belters for us didn't he. Unbelievable what confidence (or lack of it, in waggys case) can do to a player
Captain... Posted 1 February 2014 Posted 1 February 2014 Any fan that doesn't appreciate what waghorn did for us is either 12 and wasn't around or just drunk too much to remember. Except it wasn't just that one season, which was in the championship for those that continue to call him a league one footballer, last season he had some great games, winning motm and scoring at a respectable rate. He has had terrible luck since joining, neither Paulo nor Sven knew where to play him, this is his fourth loan spell and he has had a number of injuries and problems. I'm gutted he didn't get the chance to build on his potential, England U21 last season lets not forget, but I'm also not naive enough think he can still make it for us. Good luck waghorn, if we ever get the chance we should cheer his name to the rafters, because he was exactly what we've always asked for in a player. He gave everything every game, he cared about the club and he helped in the transition from our lowest ebb in football to being the club we are today. We overpaid, but that wasn't his fault, he underperformed at times, that was, but I always enjoyed supporting him, he was part of the team that restored pride to us. Along with Howard and Fryatt and Berner and Oakley and others. Waghorn I salute you. Mark if it gets too tough pm me, solidarity brother.
Danizen Posted 1 February 2014 Posted 1 February 2014 He carried us into the play-offs when Fryatt had that nasty jaw break. He's a good lad and he should do the business for Wigan if they give him a run in the team. I won't miss him but I can't understand why people are being so negative about him.
ADK Posted 1 February 2014 Posted 1 February 2014 I'm surprised he's not been given a chance here but I trust Nigel.
MC Prussian Posted 1 February 2014 Posted 1 February 2014 Scored some absolute belters for us didn't he. Unbelievable what confidence (or lack of it, in waggys case) can do to a playerBut that's more down to the lack of match practice than anything else. He's hardly featured for us in a while now and been restricted to the odd loan spell here and there. Makes it hard to develop consistency. I'm sure Martyn is professional enough to not let it get to him on a personal basis.
Hungry Hungry Fox Posted 1 February 2014 Posted 1 February 2014 I value footballing ability over the ability to run around like a headless chicken
Hungry Hungry Fox Posted 1 February 2014 Posted 1 February 2014 I'm surprised he's not been given a chance here but I trust Nigel. Who would you of dropped to give him that chance?

Guest Col city fan Posted 1 February 2014 Posted 1 February 2014 Good move for Waggy. I'm surprised he's not kicked on from the excellent young player we signed.
