davieG Posted 4 February 2014 Posted 4 February 2014 Daily Mirror Two cities are in a tug of love over England’s World Cup-winning goalkeeper Gordon Banks. The row has broken out over a statue of the hero who played for Stoke City and Leicester City during a glittering career. The life-size sculpture was unveiled at Stoke’s Britannia Stadium in 2008. But after a row over money the statue is currently on loan at a museum in the city. Now Leicester City – backed by former players – are in talks with the statue’s owner to have it moved to their King Power stadium. The plan has sparked uproar in Stoke. Gordon, 76, wants the bronze sculpture to stay in his adopted city of Stoke. He said: “When the statue was being made I was told by the guy who was paying for it and people at Stoke City it would be placed outside the ground. “That is where I’d like it to be, as this is where I’m living. But if they are talking about moving it to Leicester, I’d rather it at a football ground than a museum.†The statue – showing the goalie with the Jules Rimet Trophy that England won in 1966 – is owned by the Gordon Banks Monument Committee which was launched and funded by Don Mullan. Don 57, said it is “ludicrous†the sculpture is not outside a football ground. He wants it taken to Leicester City, a move backed by club’s former skipper Steve Walsh who said: “Bringing the statue here would be a great idea. He’s a Leicester legend.†Stoke City said they want the statue to stay in the city. Leicester City declined to comment. Newspapers in both cities have set up rival campaigns over the statue. http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/gordon-banks-statue-row-stoke-3111779#ixzz2sOCBLbbt Follow us: @DailyMirror on Twitter | DailyMirror on Facebook
Deucalion Posted 4 February 2014 Posted 4 February 2014 At no point in the Daily Mirror do they mention he played for Leicester in 1966.
itsblueupnorth Posted 4 February 2014 Posted 4 February 2014 If Gordon Banks wants the statue to stay in Stoke let them keep it - perhaps he still holds a grudge because we decided to sell him and keep Shilton - for me a statue of King Garry, Steve Walsh or the "Birch" would be preferable - former players who all still love our club and would show far more appreciation than Banks

Soar Fox Posted 4 February 2014 Posted 4 February 2014 Doesn't sound like he wants in Leicester which is fair enough. He wasn't born or grew up in Leicester maybe it was just a club that he played for and has no affiliation with.
GingerrrFox Posted 4 February 2014 Posted 4 February 2014 If Banks wants it in Stoke and they don't want it let it stay in the school and let's get our own statue made of another Leicester legend in Rowley. He's the clubs record goal scorer for ****s sake. Stick Lineker next to him as well and be done with it and have two generations of goal scorers side by side.
FuriousFox46 Posted 4 February 2014 Posted 4 February 2014 Our fans voted for statues of these guys If Banks wants it in Stoke and they don't want it let it stay in the school and let's get our own statue made of another Leicester legend in Rowley. Carl the Llama Posted 5 February 2014 Posted 5 February 2014 You guys do realise he said he'd prefer it to be in Stoke, but would happily accept it being in Leicester don't you?

One statue that is already in existence which wont cost us much paying homage to one of only a few Englishman to have currently lifted a world cup whilst playing for their country, only 8 clubs can claim that and I think its worth celebrating! Gordon Banks - LEICESTER CITY George Cohen - Fulham Jack Charlton - Leeds United Bobby Moore - Westham United Ray Wilson - Everton Nobby Stiles - Manchester United Alan Ball - Blackpool Bobby Charlton - Manchester United Martin Peters - Westham United Geoff Hurst - Westham United Roger Hunt - Liverpool Banks outside the King Power holding the top trophy in the World PERFECT
Kitchandro Posted 5 February 2014 Posted 5 February 2014 I think he should appreciate that Stoke are just trying to claim him for some kind of fame, they're obviously not that bothered and he holds far more claim to being a legend for us than for them. We seem to be the ones putting the effort in now. Why has it caused uproar in Stoke now just because we want it, when they've been perfectly happy to see it rot in a school for the past 4 years or so? It's just like Yorkshire when we dug up Richard III, they suddenly gave a shit after we did all the hard work.
dynamark Posted 5 February 2014 Posted 5 February 2014 Gordon played with us in a very good period but Ive a feeling we sold him for the fee. Decent man shouldn't be drawn into a silly argument.Statues are for the past lets look forward.{Pigeons)

6ups 6downs 2 cups Posted 5 February 2014 Posted 5 February 2014 As it stands then its leicester v stoke over a statue and Leicester v York over a set of bones! We are good at making rivals over all sorts of stuff!
davieG Posted 5 February 2014 Posted 5 February 2014 As far as I can see it will be this statue or no statue. A statue for LCFC has been debated many times and it's hard to get consensus on a single outstanding player that many clubs seem to find easy to do although i guess the longer it goes on even players like Banks will become a fading memory for some and a total unknown to so many more. But the main reason I see this is because i doubt anyone has the funds to pay for it you'd need going on for £150,000 for one, the Banks one was £80,000 6 years ago and that was without a plinth. i just don't see there being enough people prepared to put the hands in their pockets to contribute to it, did we even get that much from fans to buy the club out of admin? Unless the Owners are prepared to stump up the cash I just can't envisage a 'new' statue appearing anytime soon.
jonthefox Posted 5 February 2014 Posted 5 February 2014 Has the club said any more about this?.I read the 'no comment' the other day.
Foxes_Trust Posted 6 February 2014 Posted 6 February 2014 A summary of the coverage locally and in Stoke http://foxestrust.co.uk/2915/banks-statue-developments#more-2915
Dan Posted 6 February 2014 Posted 6 February 2014 I can't believe he'd prefer it somewhere that's had it moved to a museum. I'd be ashamed by that and I'd certainly want it moved to somewhere that actually wants it.
Bayfox Posted 6 February 2014 Posted 6 February 2014 If Banks wants it in Stoke and they don't want it let it stay in the school and let's get our own statue made of another Leicester legend in Rowley. He's the clubs record goal scorer for ****s sake. Stick Lineker next to him as well and be done with it and have two generations of goal scorers side by side. This is not a bad idea. I was all for the Banks one being here instead of gathering dust. However if he want's it in stoke then leave well alone. A battle over it seems petty. Our record goal scorer (never to be broken) along with one of our own, old jug ears is not a bad idea.
artursteppe Posted 6 February 2014 Posted 6 February 2014 Shilton and Banks, best goalkeepers the world has ever seen. Banks, world cup winner - Shilton, most capped England player. It should either be a statue of both, or if Banks really does see himself as a Stoke rather than Leicester legend it should be Shilton. On the other hand, Gary Lineker is the second highest goalscorer for England. Blimey! Ain't Leicester Great!
Spudulike Posted 6 February 2014 Posted 6 February 2014 This has just highlighted how poor we are as a club at not honouring our past. We love to speak about our history and heritage but where do we celebrate it ?? Perhaps in the locked rooms or along corridor walls inside the stadium but that precludes most of us from even being aware of it. What happened to the museum we were promised when moving over to Freemen's Wharf ?? It always amazes me how any suggestion to commission a statue or other commemorative piece gets the old 'it'll cost too much' put down before it's even got beyond the initial thought. Other clubs don't seem to have this problem. Almost all other clubs have something to celebrate their history whether a statue (or two!), memorial gates, murals or even named slabs or bricks in the stadium surrounds or concourses. Not just the big clubs either, I was struck by the amount of history on display at Bournemouth last Saturday and eventhough it's a relatively new build stadium it manages to shout about the clubs past. I thought Ian Bason made some good points about the statue being in the wrong place especially as it depicts Banks with the Jules Rimet trophy. Of course its more appropriate to be sited in Leicester, however, if this one is to stay in Stoke then let this be the catalyst to getting one of our own and other pieces we can all see that reminds us and visitors of our heritage. Can the Foxes Trust and the Mercury get involved perhaps if only to lobby the club ?? Come on City, you can do better than this.
Captain... Posted 6 February 2014 Posted 6 February 2014 Why can't people just act like fvcking adults about the whole thing. Stoke don't want it outside their stadium, we do, so now Stoke do. Why not loan it to the club for a couple of seasons, then they can have it back, I can just see it sparking a petty row, when it should be about honouring a true great of the game.
Spudulike Posted 6 February 2014 Posted 6 February 2014 Nah, you're alright thanks. http://www.stokesentinel.co.uk/Longton-businessman-hold-key-keeping-Gordon-Banks/story-20568642-detail/story.html

We've only considered getting involved because of the disrespect and disinterest shown by Stoke. I would have no problem seeing that bust displayed in the KP, I think it's a decent likeness, but surely it is more suited to inside the Brittania than a lifesize statue.
Soar Fox Posted 6 February 2014 Posted 6 February 2014 We can't even sort one statue out for outside the stadium m, whilst Arsenal have 4 for their club legends.
