Kitchandro Posted 4 March 2014 Posted 4 March 2014 No, you're assuming that you have to be gay to be offended by homophobia, which is complete bullshit. All kinds of discrimination offend me. If someone next to me at the football shouts '**** off you black ****' or 'get the **** up, you mincing homo twat' you can bet I'm going to have a problem. How is that bullshit? If you're a straight bloke offended by gay 'banter' you're a fvcking idiot.
Mark_w Posted 4 March 2014 Posted 4 March 2014 There's you assuming that all Brighton fans are actually gay No this is an example of you being an idiot. I'm heterosexual and I find homophobia offensive. I imagine that's true of most Leicester and Brighton fans.
Babylon Posted 4 March 2014 Author Posted 4 March 2014 Exactly, isn't that banter? Well I do not accept banter in regards your definition I'm afraid. The only times I ever see that word used are for some oaf to excuse their one way insulting behaviour. Turn anything famous/stereotypical about a City into a stick to beat them with. 'Town full of pakis' probably goes too far. The fact you say "probably" makes me think you aren't 100% sure it's wrong? But why do we always have to be so hysterical? It's not crime of the century. It's childish, neanderthal 'humour' that alludes to the very basics of football banter. Who has been hysterical? I have merely tried to explain that you need to look at bit deeper sometimes, there seems to be people who think as long as you don't use taboo words you can use certain groups as the butt of your jokes. When in reality there is little difference, the meaning is still there and still clear. Most of what we are subjected to, and Brighton for that matter, is just very boring, very unimaginative, but harmless. I really can't see why people take it so seriously. It's not genuine racism or homophobia because largely it's not based on genuine hate. Not based on genuine hate, we are talking about football fans here who would gladly kick lumps out of each other given half the chance. Large numbers of knuckle dragging, stone island wearing, EDL supporting morons, you know as well as I do these people exist at football and these people are often at the core of these sort of chants. I don't think these chants are big or clever but I can't bring myself to be outraged by it. It's not really Russia or Serbia is it? I'm not outraged with them, but I can understand why some might be and why people want it removing from the game. Whilst some of the stuff mentioned is clearly at the lower ends of abuse, as I say the reasoning behind it is the same.
Mark_w Posted 4 March 2014 Posted 4 March 2014 How is that bullshit? If you're a straight bloke offended by gay 'banter' you're a fvcking idiot. And I'm sure people were saying the same about racist 'banter' many years ago. Edit: Replacing the word straight with white (generally) obviously, or it wouldn't make any sense.
indierich06 Posted 4 March 2014 Posted 4 March 2014 How is that bullshit? If you're a straight bloke offended by gay 'banter' you're a fvcking idiot. Can you please explain to me why I have to be gay to be offended by homophobia? I suppose I have to be an ethnic minority to be offended by racism? Or I have to be in a wheelchair before I can get angry about the discrimination faced by disabled people? You might think disagreeing with discrimination is 'fvucking idiotic', I personally just think it's the mindset of most decent human beings. But yeah, **** all common decency as long as we're having a total banteriffic time at the football with the LADS. We're a right bunch of ****ing Bantersaurus Rexes! Did you see that ****ing poof's face when I shouted 'does your boyfriend know you're here?' - I'm the ****ing Archbishop of Banterbury! LADSLADSLADSLADS! Banter. What a ****ing shit, catch-all term for acting like a total willy puller. At least have the bollocks to say it like it is - you're taking the piss out of gay people.
RumbleFox Posted 4 March 2014 Posted 4 March 2014 Some of this is depressing. Anyone who is arguing that any of this is somehow "a bit of fun. Just a bit off banter" is really really out of order. It's the same folk that go on a about "bloody political correctness" as if it's a bad thing. You know why it is sociably unacceptable to call black people niggers anymore? Political correctness. You know why gay people are no longer locked up? Political correctness. Why people with mental health problems are no longer spackers who we lock away as though possessed by evil spirits? Political correctness. If you want to fight the fight on political correctness and fight for you right to call a gay person a bender and laugh at women drivers then that's up to you but don;t get offended when some people call you a bigoted moron. /freedom of speech is an important thing but so is the freedom to criticise what others say and point out if their thinking is small minded. It is the reason we now live in a more accepting society and hopefully will live in an even more accepting society in the future. Depressing documentary and some depressing views on here but I think most folk understand this kind of "banter" is just a bit pathetic. Rumble. X
shade Posted 4 March 2014 Posted 4 March 2014 How is that bullshit? If you're a straight bloke offended by gay 'banter' you're a fvcking idiot. hilarious. it's pretty simple "we can see you holding hands" is chanted at people as a smear (banter), you're implying that there is something wrong with two same-sex people holding hands. you wouldn't chant this unless subconciously or conciously, you believe it's wrong. the actual slur itself, may be relatively mild, but the motivation behind it speaks to something much darker in my opinion.
MooseBreath Posted 4 March 2014 Posted 4 March 2014 I think people are missing the point. chants that refer to homosexuality aren't ultimately offensive to the heterosexuals in the stadium (although they may well be offended). it's offensive to gay people who, shock horror may hold hands and be the same sex. do you honestly think hundreds of people insulting a group of people for doing what you do naturally isn't harsh, come on. It's not really an insult as such though is it, "we can see you holding hands". If that's an insult it's about as light hearted as insults get and if you're offended by that you'll be offended by almost everything you hear at a football match. Let's be honest this thread has turned into a clusterfvck of pretentiousness with people happy to say things like "knuckledragging, EDL supporting morons" while simultaneously claiming that the most lighthearted of insults aimed at whatever minority group is flavour of the day down at the guardian is the worst thing in the world. It's literally pathetic.
RumbleFox Posted 4 March 2014 Posted 4 March 2014 There's you assuming that all Brighton fans are actually gay If they're straight they have no more reason to take offence than a straight City fan standing next to me. So them complaining about it is irrelevant. If they get upset by that kind of thing then they should a) ignore it or b) stop going to the football. Seriously, they need to take a chill pill and stop giving a shit. It's really not worth worrying about. Just thought i would say you are making yourself look a bit silly with some of your comments. I agree with some of your football posts so just wanted to let you know so you didn't carry on and make yourself look really silly. x

I'm 68, so I am old enough to remember when ads for flats in London specified "No dogs, no Irish, no Culluds [sic]: I was angered by that at the time, and my anger has not got any less in the 50 years since I first saw ads like that. And I am still angered by bigotry. I'm not black, nor Jewish, nor gay, but that does not stop me being offended by people who hurl insults - however mildly worded - at minorities. Describing it as 'banter' is, quite simply, bullsh!t: bigotry has only one spelling.

FLINTHAMFC Posted 4 March 2014 Posted 4 March 2014 That was a pretty depressing show but not hugely surprising. I was even less surprised by the lack of effort from the police. People follow examples that are set. I would suggest that until football clubs make sure that their own employees conduct themselves in a better manner we will always have a problem. Whilst footballers act like thugs, berating linespeople, surrounding referees, swearing every other word in an aggressive manner, spitting every five seconds etc the very same football clubs cannot expect the supporters to behave in a different manner. Lead from the top, not the bottom.
davieG Posted 4 March 2014 Posted 4 March 2014 None of it has got anything to do with supporting your football team it's pretty much just self gratification.
Darkon84 Posted 4 March 2014 Posted 4 March 2014 The levels some people will go to in order to get offended is hilarious
Captain... Posted 4 March 2014 Posted 4 March 2014 The person that is saying something, does not decide if it is offensive, the person hearing it does. I may not be offended by being called a white cvnt or whatever, but my mate is offended by being called a black cvnt. When people are made aware that what they are saying or doing is offensive, a decent person stops doing it. You should tell him to stop being a cvnt then. One of you convicts does a good routine on it, Steve Hughes, google it, quite funny. My personal point of view is that no subject is taboo as long as it is funny, an offensive joke contains two parts it is offensive and a joke, if it is not funny then you are just being a dick, and calling it banter doesn't change that. I think one of the reasons I don't mind 'we can see you holding hands' is that the first time I heard it I thought it was funny, I mean now it is boring, but the first time was way back I'd only just heard about Brighton being gay capital of the UK, and it was, to my young mind, quite witty and subtle. 'Does your boyfriend know your hear?' less so. Anything along the lines of 'town full of queers' crosses the line. That's my view.
MooseBreath Posted 4 March 2014 Posted 4 March 2014 Coming from the man who says 95% cases of bullying are somehow that persons fault for refusing "an invitation to proceed in some ritualistic bonding leading to friendship". Yes, and that point is spot on.
purpleronnie Posted 4 March 2014 Posted 4 March 2014 The levels some people will go to in order to get offended is hilarious I find that offensive.

Babylon Posted 4 March 2014 Author Posted 4 March 2014 Yes, and that point is spot on. Yeah of course it is. Those stupid children not seeing the fun side of name calling and physical abuse, they should have joined in with the bully and waltzed off into the distance as best friends forever.
Darkon84 Posted 4 March 2014 Posted 4 March 2014 Good job some of the people in this thread haven't been on the Oscar Pistorius one. There's some jokes in there that would make some of the people in here explode!
RumbleFox Posted 4 March 2014 Posted 4 March 2014 The levels some people will go to in order to get offended is hilarious So are you saying you do not see a problem with any of the abuse that was seen on the documentary? X
