Captain... Posted 7 August 2014 Posted 7 August 2014 Adam Lyth? Don't know much about him, his stats in first class look good. I guess you have to give Robson until the end of the series, would there be any benefit in bringing in Lyth for one test, then not having a test for 6 months. Are the England Lions playing any tests in the winter? That would be a good opportunity to get Lyth and Robson opening and see who steps up.
StanSP Posted 7 August 2014 Posted 7 August 2014 Glad we're getting some wickets now. Would have been sick to the stomach if we couldn't get any by the end of the day but glad we've got a couple.
Captain... Posted 7 August 2014 Posted 7 August 2014 Cook goes cheap again OMG GET HIM OUT He went cheap, but he looked comfortable and got out going for a shot rather than being pinned on the back foot looking nervous until he gave away his wicket. Like Robson did. Disappointing of course, but I don't see that wicket the same as his wickets earlier in the Summer. Shame we lost Ballance late on, would have been a perfect day otherwise. Jordan as nightwatchman? don't get why you would bring in someone who can bat like Jordan to block out an over, would make more sense to use Jimmy, Jordan can come out and bat aggressively, I've not really seen him bat cautiously, of course it could work tomorrow when he gets in and starts slogging the ball giving our innings an injection. We will see.
purpleronnie Posted 7 August 2014 Posted 7 August 2014 Nightwatchman????, I always hope we get out of that mindset, oh well.

We will see. To me, a wicket is a wicket. And that would go for any team. Just like a tap-in goal in football equates to a mazy run from half-way line. Essentially, and this is a very blunt view of it all, they're both goals at the end of the day. Saying that, I think Walkers was taking the piss

Sir Fynwy Posted 7 August 2014 Posted 7 August 2014 It's absolutely brilliant to see the Indian team challenging records, 6 ducks in an innings, pity it's only shared but 11 in a test is a target they can go for.
Voll Blau Posted 7 August 2014 Posted 7 August 2014 Another failure for Robson, 2 scores above 30 in 10 innings is not good enough for an opener, especially on what have been generally good batting wickets, his wickets often seem cheap and easily avoidable. It was a good ball to get him out, but leaving a ball like that is what you expect from tail enders not openers. What other options do we have, Carberry, Root, Trott to return as opener? Never really understood why Compton was cast off so easily. Carberry seemed to be the only English batsmen generally batting with a mixture of aggression and common sense in Australia, seemed to be the fall guy as the least experienced member of a failing top and middle order. wouldn't be opposed to giving him another go Like Lyth but throwing another uncapped player into and already inexperienced setup might be a gamble. If we're talking chopping and changing (which, like I say, isn't the greatest idea while we've got an inexperienced side) I don't really see what Woakes offers that others don't.

Essentially, and this is a very blunt view of it all, they're both goals at the end of the day. Saying that, I think Walkers was taking the piss I wasn't sure if he was taking the piss or not, I'm pretty sure some people were making that exact same comment in the exact same way and being serious. In terms of a match a wicket is a wicket, but in terms of Cook's future it was a positive and assured 17 but got out taking a risk in the pursuit of runs. If you think of it like a striker not scoring a goal, when a striker is out of form he doesn't look like scoring, doesn't want the ball and is scared of making runs in case the ball comes to him in a goal scoring position and he fluffs it. When a striker is making all the right runs and looking confident, he may still miss a few chances, but when they are putting in the effort making the right runs getting in scoring positions then you aren't concerned about their form. Robson on the other hand didn't look comfortable, I think his 4 came from an edge that flew through the slips and it looked like a matter of time before he got out.

If we're talking chopping and changing (which, like I say, isn't the greatest idea while we've got an inexperienced side) I don't really see what Woakes offers that others don't. In hindsight it was a strange decision, Compton was clearly capable, but wasn't exactly pulling up trees, he didn't give his wicket away and stayed around long enough to see off the new ball, but wasn't very positive early on and didn't score early runs putting us under pressure, but having tried Root, Carberry and now Robson opening it may have been better to persevere with him and not move Root up and down the order, nor bring in an opener for their debut down under. As for Woakes, he has been solid, bowled good line and length, but just seems to miss that x factor that will get him wickets, they aren't getting him away and he is helping build pressure by being tight which wasn't happening with Plunkett or Stokes, they always seemed to throw down a bad ball in their over to relieve the pressure allowing the batsmen to play defensive to Jimmy and Broad and then take on Stokes and Plunkett. If they aren't scoring off Woakes then they are under so much more pressure to score when facing Jimmy and Broad. He is also pretty handy with the bat, we'll hopefully see how handy in the third session today.
Guest MattP Posted 8 August 2014 Posted 8 August 2014 Should wrap this one up now within 4 days, playing some superb cricket again. Where's the guy who wanted Cook, Bell and Broad dropped now?
Captain... Posted 8 August 2014 Posted 8 August 2014 2 quick wickets, back under pressure, still in a great position, but we need another partnership here, then unleash Buttler to take the game away from them. Another collapse and we will be under pressure batting last.
Guest MattP Posted 8 August 2014 Posted 8 August 2014 Robson and Moeen both clearly not good enough with the bat at this level.
surrifox Posted 8 August 2014 Posted 8 August 2014 need a lead of 100+ batting last with some decent turn in the pitch and a couple of spinners - cant see where its coming from without some lower order hitting
purpleronnie Posted 8 August 2014 Posted 8 August 2014 Frickin northern weather, nice everywhere else, forecast for tomoz is good, but after that it's unsettled.
Corky Posted 8 August 2014 Posted 8 August 2014 Robson and Moeen both clearly not good enough with the bat at this level. I think Moeen can be, Robson I'm just not convinced about.
Captain... Posted 9 August 2014 Posted 9 August 2014 Good partnership exactly what we needed, shows good mental strength we lost 3 cheap wickets and were in danger of throwing away a great position, but Buttler has done what Prior used to do come in and bat as needed for the team. Southampton he came in and smacked it around, this time he has played sensible accumulation of runs. He's had a bit of luck in both innings and made a few mistakes with the gloves but overall very impressed by him so far.
Swarles Barkley Posted 9 August 2014 Posted 9 August 2014 OUCH. hope broadys okay Techinal question: if he edged that and it got caught in the helmet then kohli took it out of his helmet (catch) is he out?
StanSP Posted 9 August 2014 Posted 9 August 2014 That looked nasty for Broad. Aaron bowls a short one and it gets stuck in Broad's helmet. Goes through and hits him on the bridge of his nose. Ouch. OUCH. hope broadys okayTechinal question: if he edged that and it got caught in the helmet then kohli took it out of his helmet (catch) is he out? Surely yes but then would be totally against the nature of the game! That would be one of the harshest dismissals. Kicking a man when he's down, if that happened!
purpleronnie Posted 9 August 2014 Posted 9 August 2014 wimps, I once took a hockey ball in the nut's,now that's pain.

StanSP Posted 9 August 2014 Posted 9 August 2014 So England all out for 367. Lead by 215. Heading for a draw I think seeing as tomorrow seems to be a write-off. That's if we can stay in bat for today and beyond
