He isn't a terrible player but we have better options. Of that I am confident.

Welbeck's nowhere near as bad as people make out.

yeah but why start someone who's "not as bad as people make out" when we've got one of the most talented, exciting, skilful young wingers in the world on the bench?

Also Sterling must be thinking wtf have I got to do to be starting, he also adds much more creativity, fluidity and fearlessness.

I think in terms of individuality you're right - Sterling is a better option than Welbeck.

But Welbeck's one of those players whose presence brings out the best in others. He's an intelligent footballer - you just need to look at Manchester United's performances with him in the side this season to see that he brings something that is quite intangible to teams, beyond the obvious running in behind and good work rate.

To be honest I think Sterling would be a better choice at the moment, but Welbeck is a good player and will have a very important role to play in Brazil.

Ask woy...

For the record I'd start sterling, much better prospect. Just getting tired of the welbeck bashing, it's like it's fashionable to hate him, we always need a scapegoat and this year it's welbeck.

I thought we were past playing strikers on the wing, obviously not.

Like MTWG said this won't be the side that starts against Italy.

if you ever want tickets (upto about 5) let me know. We're always after people to use them so we don't have to go. We get £5 off so to sit up in the gods its £25 a go.

Soumd mate. Thanks for the offer. Ill keep it in mind.

I agree that Sterling should start ahead of Welbeck but other than that it's the right team and formation imo.

I thought Welbeck was one of our better performers in euro 2012 in his defence

Yeah, but in much the same way that Hume was one of our better performers in 07/08. They were all shit, he was just slightly less shit than others.

Decent goal and performance against Sweden, indifferent the rest of the tournament.

He shouldn't be in the squad and wouldn't be if he didn't play for Man U

Yeah that's true. Just annoys me that Rooney doesn't get enough stick

Because, despite the fact he often doesn't turn up for England, he is the closest thing we have to a World Class talent.

Might be sensible to hold Stirling back a bit. If he plays tonight and tears shit up then hype machine will go into turbo drive. Get him out of the country first and let him play without that kind of pressure.

I know we are all quite cynical about our national team at the moment and the lack of 'world class' players but does anybody else see a glimmer of hope on the horizon?

What I'm getting at is players like Sterling, Barkley and Sturridge (slightly different) coming through the ranks. Players that aren't afraid to take on a man, more direct and positive. A different brand of player thats been missing from our "golden era".

Maybe tge attitude to coaching is slowly changing and who knows this might be the future for England? It's not going to happen over night but I think there's hope.

I would have included Lallana who I think is a fantastic footballer to watch but he's not really a youngster.

Anyway just a thought

Ex-Liverpool and Germany midfielder Dietmar Hamann â€on Twitter: Sterling and Barkley would go straight into Germany's team right now. They must have half a chance of getting into England's. They are special.

Can't take this seriously to be honest.

Who would you have instead?

Jesus, we'd be getting down to the Nathan Redmonds of this world before I'd finished naming players I'd want instead of him.

Fair enough, it's your opinion. I just happen to think it's an odd one.

I can see Welbeck moving somewhere like Everton and doing very well for himself.

He didn't do well for himself in a title winning side so I really can't see where your coming from.

He has attributes and he can occasionally produce something unorthadox that's brilliant but his general technique for a professional footballer is dire, never mind an international.

Whilst Welbeck wouldn't be in my team, he's generally been much better for England than Sturridge who contunually gets a free pass due to his liverpool form.

Yet to see Sturridge have a decent game for the national side tbh.

The problem with this arguement is it's more to do with Daniel Strurridge being disappointing than Wellbeck being any good.

I couldn't care less if he is to be honest. If he's not doing for England he shouldn't play, simple as that. This game is a prime example of what he does, or doesn't do more to the point. Just strolls around playing little 3 yard passes. Well great Roone, that's what we need from you
