roblcfc84 Posted 3 June 2014 Posted 3 June 2014 Not normally one to start a thread but can't believe the battering this poor lad is taking on social media (not that I'm giving the internet any creedence) but he seems to have become the scape goat of English football. Ok he's no world beater but he is better than a lot of garbage in the Premier League and Fergie clearly saw something in him, and Pearson tbf. Anyone else think its a bit OTT. Personally would welcome him back.
kingcarr21 Posted 3 June 2014 Posted 3 June 2014 He is bang average. Has no identity in football and once again is another player that is only involved in the England squad because he plays for Man Utd. There is no way he deserves to be a back up for the World Cup ahead of the likes of Huddlestone and Barry. I will agree though that social media singling out one man is very harsh. I hope that he doesnt take it to heart and works hard to prove the doubters wrong. He should take a leaf out of Vardy's book
Danizen Posted 3 June 2014 Posted 3 June 2014 Just look at how much Gareth Barry's reputation has improved since he's been away from the international scene. It's ridiculous. Cleverley is a decent CM. Probably good enough to be on the periphery for Man United. It's not his fault they don't have anyone better.

I'd argue Barry's reputation has risen since he was away from Man City and playing week in week out again!
bovril Posted 3 June 2014 Posted 3 June 2014 We live in the age of the 'expert' where people read something on the net and pass it off as their own opinion. The amount of stick he's got for such a young player is embarrassing. Anyway, he has something Steven Gerrard doesn't....
Fox92 Posted 3 June 2014 Posted 3 June 2014 The people who take to social media to hammer a player directly are embarrassing themselves.
AKCJ Posted 3 June 2014 Posted 3 June 2014 He is shit though. In that he shouldn't really be playing for Manchester United and England, yes. But a lot of people on social media think that he should be back in the Football League or something. I'd have him here in half a heartbeat. He's a victim of his team's lack of success. He shouldn't be playing for those sides and he desperately needs to get out of Man U before he turns into another Emile Heskey.

I didn't even think Cleverley was anyone special here with us - in League One. As you say he was only in the England squad because he's a United player and seems to be out of his depth for both. Half a winger, half a central midfield, it's clear he has technical ability but doesn't have the directness or pace that a winger would possess nor the ability to dictate a game from the middle of the park.
J.Lisemore Posted 3 June 2014 Posted 3 June 2014 He's probably a Championship player at the moment in my opinion. He's frustrating to watch in the sense, nobody really knows what he offers in a game of football.

Brainy Posted 3 June 2014 Posted 3 June 2014 Tbf in 10 years time when the likes of Ross Barkley and Luke Shaw have celebrity girlfriends and are getting involved in night club punch ups they'll be about as popular as Ashley Cole and John Terry had became
LeicesterBran Posted 3 June 2014 Posted 3 June 2014 I liked him when he was on loan for us and thought he was a class act at the time. He clearly is not good enough to be playing for Manchester United and to be a England International but, I believe that can be a good player for a club like Newcastle, Hull or Aston Villa.

He was wank when they won the League, and that is what got him England call ups, Hodgson picked him purely because he was getting games in the worse side that has ever won the Premier League. You're right that he shouldn't be playing Championship football but he shouldn't/wouldn't get in any of the top 8 Premier League (how last season finished) sides midfield, therefor should be nowhere near playing for England.

Agree with this. A lot of the criticism that Cleverley has had has gone way too far but he is pretty obviously a lower-half Premier League player. Actually, given the right team and the right players around him he could probably look quite good, and if he wasn't English and therefore not of any interest whatsoever to them, a move to Newcastle would probably give him an opportunity to properly be the main man and fill a hole in their team which has been gaping since Cabaye's departure (not that he is anywhere near that level of course). Frankly I couldn't have seen him getting in our team last season. Perhaps that's more a reflection on James and Drinkwater's seasons more than anything though. I mean - if you could have 2 out of Drinkwater, James and Cleverley, who would you have?
Vacamion Posted 3 June 2014 Posted 3 June 2014 Remember when it was fashionable to slag off Jordan Henderson and laugh at his transfer fee a while back? Even Fergie criticised the way he runs. Some of the slagging of Cleverley seems a bit like that. I hope he turns it around.
ScouseFox Posted 3 June 2014 Posted 3 June 2014 it's become cliche but i'm sure he'd start to shine in an everton/southampton/newcastle side
kingcarr21 Posted 4 June 2014 Posted 4 June 2014 I would love to see him turn his fortunes around and prove people wrong. Henderson did it, Vardy did it. Now lets see if Van Gaal will give him the opportunity to turn it around or fvck him off.
Nalis Posted 4 June 2014 Posted 4 June 2014 Looks like "bang average" is about to overtake "lazy journalism" in the annoying, overused phrases category. **** me, this multiplied by one million. Would rep but I'm on my phone. Nothing worse than reading a BBC Sport article where 'lazy journalism' and 'shoddy journalism' are repeated over and over by keyboard warriors. Not forgetting the obligatory nicknaming of the sports writers in question, eg, 'McNupity' , etc...
