Brizzle Fox Posted 11 July 2014 Posted 11 July 2014 I also remember re the goal col references that Lineker after said it was just about the bumpiest pitch he'd ever played on but it was like the ball was tied to Maradonas foot. Also in those days you were allowed to tackle and Maradona used to get kicked from pillar to post game after game. People tend to get blinded to just how food Maradona was because of his obnoxious personality. By a long way the greatest player in my lifetime
foxfanazer Posted 11 July 2014 Posted 11 July 2014 Did you see Maradona play? I think Maradonna's biggest feat, possibly, was going to Napoli. If my memory serves me rightly, did he not go to a struggling Italian club and, literally almost singlehandedly, lead them to the Serie A title in his first season? Messi is a sensational footballer. But to get the best out of him, other players must forfeit aspects of their game, to accomodate his brilliance. Mascherano for instance, must be disciplined and sit back, doing all the DM work, giving Messi free rein. The Argentinians success is actually based as much on Mascherano as on Messi, in this tournament. Maradonna could play in any way, in any formation, could do just about anything. The second goal against England in the World Cup, was just about the best goal I've ever seen. I remember sitting there, speechless. Although it did help playing against Fenwick. No I'm not that old Col Also there's no way Maradona would've scored a goal like that nowadays, he'd have been hacked down before he got anywhere near the box
Guest Col city fan Posted 11 July 2014 Posted 11 July 2014 No I'm not that old Col Also there's no way Maradona would've scored a goal like that nowadays, he'd have been hacked down before he got anywhere near the box Big call for you to state any player 'the best ever' if you haven't seen them play buddy? I agree with the poster above. Top players now play on carpets and fall on their arses if someone blows on them. Look at the type of pitches Maradonna played on and what was allowed, challenge-wise, back then.
C-man Posted 11 July 2014 Posted 11 July 2014 Finally winning a World Cup would be a start. I agree that he's exceptional and a pleasure to watch, but he's yet to prove he can guide the national team to victory on an international level. Eagerly awaiting Sunday now... He's got two, maybe three more chances getting to the heights of Maradona, Pele or Pirlo. Finally? He has practically dragged them to the final of his third World Cup. In his first WC he was still a teenager, mostly left on the bench. In his second WC his Manager was Maradona. Not winning a WC is the most retarded reason to determine whether or not someone is the greatest player ever. It is flawed on so many levels it's baffling to even suggest so.

Yeah I get what you're saying but by the same token you can't say Maradona is the best ever either. I made the dreaded FT mistake and forgot to put imo

That was great footballing, surprised it didn't catch on. Messi could be so much better if he just used his damn hands a bit

Col, that's his job anyway. He is a defensive midfielder. He's there to break up the attacks of the other team and to win the ball back and just generally be a defensive minded-player. He's there to support the defence and very rarely will venture forward. So I'm not sure what part of the game he's forfeiting to allow Messi to shine.

Raj Posted 11 July 2014 Posted 11 July 2014 I'm seriously struggling to look past Germany now. I don't think they're the sort who'd get carried away after last night either. Argentina haven't seriously impressed me all tournament. Their biggest win has been 3-2 against Nigeria. Every single game they've got out of jail with a bit of magic. I can't help but feel it'll run out eventually. That said, they've defended very well throughout this to be fair. Add this to Germany having played only 90 minutes, with an extra days rest, with the game sewn up before the half hour mark. They'll be in better condition and I think it'll see them through. couldnt agree more with the above...its as if i wrote it myself!!!
Grandad. Posted 11 July 2014 Posted 11 July 2014 Were people in the UK able to watch Maradona play for Barcelona and Napoli on a regular basis or are all the opinions given here on World Cup viewing?
Haydos Posted 11 July 2014 Posted 11 July 2014 Were people in the UK able to watch Maradona play for Barcelona and Napoli on a regular basis or are all the opinions given here on World Cup viewing? This is what I was thinking, even more so with Pele tbh. Outside of World Cups can anyone on here tell me how many cumulative minutes they have watched Pele or Maradona play. I doubt anybody on here has seen Pele play a full game and there can't be more than a handful that have done the same with Maradona.

Clearly they were both magnificent players but the mystique surrounding them has undoubtedly added to their legend. Messi, Ronaldo et al don't have that.
Nalis Posted 11 July 2014 Posted 11 July 2014 The whole 'Messi/Ronaldo have to win a World Cup to be considered a great' is really old hat. If Klose achieved his feats 30 years ago, he'd probably be considered a better player than he is now.
Nalis Posted 11 July 2014 Posted 11 July 2014 http://m.skysports.com/article/football//9378873 The man is a joke, dont understand how he gets so much tv work.

Has been reported to state he doesn't favour the DM role but plays there to accomodate tactical formations. Messi and Maradonna both sensational players. From what IVE seen, thus my own opinion, I think Maradonna is the best player I've ever seen in my lifetime. Bar none.

A few international games maybe. I'm pretty sure you would not have seen him at all in Argentina so that's nearly half his career. He wasn't at Barca for that long but maybe a few highlights there. So the conclusion is you were a massive Napoli fan in the 80's and somehow caught a lot of their games. I'm sorry Col but I can't take people seriously who say they think Mardona/Pele are the best of all time unless they've watched them play. You genuinely can't have seen much of Maradona, I'm not 100% sure but I doubt that it was physically possible (due to lack of coverage) to be able to see much of him over here.
Julian Joachim Jr Shabadoo Posted 11 July 2014 Posted 11 July 2014 But… but… there's a Youtube clip where Madonna looks really good?
Stadt Posted 11 July 2014 Posted 11 July 2014 I can't believe anybody is even discussing a defensive midfielder's best position with Col considering his past. I hate the argument that you have to win a World Cup to be the greatest ever, say the best player that we've ever seen came from Tajikistan? But he's never going to win the WC because of the dross around him so that automatically means he's not in contention? Bollocks.
Jon the Hat Posted 11 July 2014 Posted 11 July 2014 Germany will win this farily comfortably, they are a league ahead of the Argies. And honestly, Argentina are such twats, and I really quite like all the Germans I know.
Alf Bentley Posted 11 July 2014 Posted 11 July 2014 But… but… there's a Youtube clip where Madonna looks really good? You reckon? Sometimes looks really naive and plays like a virgin. Can get into the groove, admittedly. Could be a True Blue one day, do you think?
