Guybino Posted 10 July 2014 Posted 10 July 2014 comes down to one man at the end of the day. if he has a good game than its the argie's WC. it will also further cement his claim as the greatest player to have ever lived.

From what I've seen of Messi (which admittedly isn't a lot), great player though he is, he's not as good as Maradona. In my lifetime, Maradona is the best I've seen. I think Germany will just nick it.

When Messi has won a WC single-handedly with a very mediocre team behind him (Maradona, Zidane) or been the repeated scoring lynchpin of a very good team with loads of goals behind him who has delivered in a WC final (Pele, original Ronaldo) then you can come back with the idea that he's the greatest player ever. Messi has done neither. However...a virtuoso performance in this final with a couple of goals thrown in would certainly put him pretty close.
AKCJ Posted 10 July 2014 Posted 10 July 2014 If Argentina win then i'll win the prediction competition at work. 90 quid would do me.
LanguedocFox Posted 10 July 2014 Posted 10 July 2014 It's been a great World Cup, and Sunday's result is not easy to predict. Early on, Germany were poor in the group stage, while both France and the Netherlands were excellent. Germany weren't that good against France, but Argentina have not been particularly inspiring at any stage. Overall, based purely on the semis, I have to go for Germany. I have a German friend down here, and in the sweepstake that our local bar has been running, he drew Argentina: I saw him this morning, and all he could say was "Win Win!" I got Spain!
Grandad. Posted 10 July 2014 Posted 10 July 2014 Will the winners get to keep the trophy like Brazil did with the Jules Rimet? Nope, I don't think so, why would they?
Marmite Posted 10 July 2014 Posted 10 July 2014 I think the Germans will be too good for Argentina. The way they passed the ball the other night and scored them goals was fantastic to watch. I bet £100 when they won the quarters for them to win the cup so will see me win £325 if it happens
Rocket-Ron Posted 10 July 2014 Posted 10 July 2014 Nope, I don't think so, why would they? Either team will have won the new trophy 3 times. same as when Brazil kept the Jules Rimet. It's not hard
Super_horns Posted 10 July 2014 Posted 10 July 2014 Germany 2-1. Think Argentina have to get the first goal really to win as Germany seem pretty useful at holding on to a lead. Argentina's defence has been solid as well so not expecting a great deal of chances.
Grandad. Posted 10 July 2014 Posted 10 July 2014 Either team will have won the new trophy 3 times. same as when Brazil kept the Jules Rimet. It's not hard Well they won't keep the actual trophy, they will receive a replica.
Rocket-Ron Posted 10 July 2014 Posted 10 July 2014 Well they won't keep the actual trophy, they will receive a replica. When Brazil won the Julie's Rimet (former World Cup trophy) for the third time in Mexico '70 they were allowed to keep the cup and a new one was created (this one).Whoever wins on Sunday has won this cup for a third time, and was just wondering if they would keep it and a new trophy be made!
RowlattsFox Posted 10 July 2014 Posted 10 July 2014 Germany are the better team but the stage is set for Messi. Can see Argentina finding a way to win, amazing that a team that has been pretty ordinary throughout could win the World Cup.

One Legged Beaver Posted 10 July 2014 Posted 10 July 2014 Hopefully Argentina win. But sadly it looks a big ask to beat the Germans.
foxfanazer Posted 10 July 2014 Posted 10 July 2014 Think Germany will quite comfortably. More of a team unit than the Argies
Bobby Hundreds Posted 10 July 2014 Posted 10 July 2014 Argies have been the strongest defensive team for me so it'll be an incredibly tight game. 1-0 either way but hoping la Selección pull it out the bag.

Haydos Posted 11 July 2014 Posted 11 July 2014 What does Messi have to do to be called the greatest player ever? He has scored about as many goals as Maradona halfway through his career and god knows how many assists. He has single handedly won several matches at this world cup on his own. If he puts in a performance in the final surely that cements it for any doubters? On top of that he's still got a good 8 years left and he's already smashed all the records going

I agree that he's exceptional and a pleasure to watch, but he's yet to prove he can guide the national team to victory on an international level. Eagerly awaiting Sunday now... He's got two, maybe three more chances getting to the heights of Maradona, Pele or Pirlo.

Guest Col city fan Posted 11 July 2014 Posted 11 July 2014 He is the best ever Did you see Maradona play? I think Maradonna's biggest feat, possibly, was going to Napoli. If my memory serves me rightly, did he not go to a struggling Italian club and, literally almost singlehandedly, lead them to the Serie A title in his first season? Messi is a sensational footballer. But to get the best out of him, other players must forfeit aspects of their game, to accomodate his brilliance. Mascherano for instance, must be disciplined and sit back, doing all the DM work, giving Messi free rein. The Argentinians success is actually based as much on Mascherano as on Messi, in this tournament. Maradonna could play in any way, in any formation, could do just about anything. The second goal against England in the World Cup, was just about the best goal I've ever seen. I remember sitting there, speechless. Although it did help playing against Fenwick.

Have you not seen Messi score the same goal but better? Tbh, I'm a strong believer that football now is the highest quality that it's ever been. Watching videos from even 20 years ago the players look unatheltic and less skilled and tactically aware. Obviously players like Pele and Maradona would have had better training and be more athletic in this time so it's all hyperbole. I think it is harder for players to effectively win games by themselves these days because the gap in quality is much lower. Defenders are more disciplined, formations are more conservative, players are faster and stronger and centre backs aren't the lumps they used to be. Messi has been consistently astonishing for years now and he can probably go on like this for years more. The stuff he does with the ball at his feet shouldn't be possible but he does it so often it just becomes normal. Admittedly I have only seen highlights of Maradona/Pele/etc but I have never seen them do the same as Messi does week in, week out. I'm sure that we'll just have to agree to disagree in the end but just my two cents.

As I said in my other post it is a lot harder for players to dominate in this day and age.
