Would you take 17th right now?

They won't so it's a pointless exercise really and why would you "settle" for anything but the best you can do in each and every fixture? Yes. I'd take top, but I'd want to earn it not be given it.

Stupid response.

You can't claim it's a pointless exercise and then partake in it yourself. Furthermore the more pointless thing to do is say you'd take top (we all would - it wasn't the question).

You focus on 17th by all means and I'll look ever upwards and accept us doing our best whether we finish top, survive in the Premiership or get relegated. I don't want to be "given" anything whether it's the mythical 17th place you mention, a lottery win or handouts from the Government.

Me thinks someone is taking this thread a little too seriously.

I'm confused as to how this works.  If we agree to take 17th now, does that mean the games don't get played?  I'm sure the players would be grateful for the time off, and as for me, well, that fence isn't going to creosote itself

There are more than 3 teams that will be worse than us this season. Especially when you look at the likes of:

Burnley, QPR, West Brom, Southampton, Stoke, Swansea, West Ham, Sunderland, Crystal Palace, Hull & Villa

I would agree with that.

I think our best finish could be 10th, and worst 16th.

So you're arguing with me whilst also agreeing to my opening point of not accepting 17th place...should I be flattered or annoyed. I'm confused.

Well lump all your money on it then, I'm not so certain...

Should have had this as a poll mate. Would've been quite interesting.

Yes from me - survival is key. Then aim to improve in second season and onwards...

With this current squad yes I would.

If we add another 2/3 players, I would expect a little bit better and think we would finish higher.

Agree with this.

All of the above! You're having a laugh!

In a way, I feel that this season is the best chance for us to reach as high as possible taking into consideration the mentality the players have coming into this season. So if they were to, say, finish 17th at the end of this season, I doubt they'll finish higher in the one after. Therefore, I won't. Go big or go home.

Agreed - was on my phone whilst doing it though! Don't usually start topics up to be honest!

Eh?!

That was the year where they have Carsley and Gravesen in the midfield. Good old days. I really enjoyed digging through old tables and remembering all memorable moments from that season. I even forgot about the season where Newcastle finished 4th above Chelsea and Liverpool!

Really tempted to do a series of threads where I post that season league table and we all discuss what we can remember from that season.

confidence is the food of the wise man and the liquor of the fool. that being said there is no way I would take 17th.

Buuurp, oops pardon, its all that food and drink.

If finishing 17th meant that we progressed the season after, then yes. But for me, finishing 17th suggests that we're barely cut out for this league, and odds on for relegation the season afterwards.

Therefore no, I wouldn't accept 17th. Unless it meant that Villa were relegated.

To everyone getting their panties in a twist:

Nobody is saying we will finish 17th nobody is saying that they would be happy with 17th, just that people would take it as a guarantee of survival as the consequence of relegation is severe. Guaranteeing staying up is more important than risking relegation for a higher league position.

If you remember Mon's first season we only survived with 1 or 2 games to spare, the league was so close that winning our last game jumped us 4 places to 9th.

Imagine a similar scenario defeat means relegation, draw means 17th, a win could get us to 13th.

Would you go all out for the win?

in a simple yes or no question the answer is yes

however the reality is it will be a long season if we're in a position of fearing the drop until may only to squirm to safety

the follow up question would surely be, how many years until youre not happy with 17th, and why that long?

because if you ask the majority, possibly all except the big 7, they will all be happy with 17th so long as the do well in the cups

would you rather have no guarantees of survival and be entertained by young british talent, or take 17th with boring tactics, boring players and performances that are JUST good enough from players you only like because they see out 17th each season despite playing poorly for 20-25 matches a season

What he said. Unfortunately it's all about money now .
