Female comics enjoy surge in popularity

Female comics are enjoying a surge in popularity, with audiences flocking to see live acts including Miranda Hart and Sarah Millican.

Box office receipts for female stand-up comedians in the UK now account for 14% of all sales, up from just 2% in 2009, according to a new Ticketmaster report.

Millican and Hart have been the biggest live draws in the past five years, followed by Dawn French.

Lee Evans was the most popular comic, with Hart the highest rated female.

She finished joint 10th with Frankie Boyle in a survey of comedy gig attendees.

However, the number of people going to see female comedy acts has trebled since 2011, with the number of events involving female comics going up more than ten fold in the last five years.

Hart and Millican have had their own television shows in recent years, with the findings further revealing that more than half of total audiences are more likely to pay to see someone they have already watched on the small screen.

The pair also embarked on a series of major national tours in recent years, encompassing some of the UK's largest venues.

However, Australian comedy act Pam Ann, who has made less of an impact on mainstream TV, was placed fourth in the rundown of the most popular female comics.

Stand-up comic Shappi Khorsandi said: "It's great to see the surge in female comedians, stamping out the prejudice. We have still further to go though, I'd like to see more female comics enjoying the dominance that men do on the bigger stages.

"Perhaps we are not capturing the public's imagination in the same way, but it is all changing for the better," she added.

The State of Play: Comedy report also examined audience behaviour at live concerts, revealing that less than a quarter of respondents saying they have heckled a performer.

In 2014, they are more likely to check their mobile phone at regular intervals during the gig (32%).

Ticketmaster surveyed 2499 members of the public including 1259 people who had attended live gigs.

I rarely enjoy a female comic, too much menstrual chat for my liking\understanding.

You need to pick the right day of the month to go and see them.

i've can't ever remember thinking a woman comedian was funny. the best thing the likes of miranda and sarah millican can do for comedy is to f ucking shut up and f uck off

If female comics didn't moan about how much they hate their husbands or talk about how much they love chocolate or actually told good jokes they'd be funny.

Shappi korsandi was pretty funny when I watched her on tv last. Edinburgh fest live program. Stayed away from the cliche "im a woman / minority" stuff and it was good. There was another too. Cant remember her name shes new to me. Lesbian

I've had more amusing root canal work done.

I dont disagree. Shes generally be shite. But on this 10 minute stint she was pretty good

Jo Brand has her funny moments, couldn't sit through an entire show though. Lucy Porter is nice to look at but doesn't float my boat with her comedy.

That top 5 is awful, no way I'd pay to see any of them, no wonder women in comedy are getting more popular with the shit at the top of the charts.

It's a crime that Micky Flannagan isn't on that list when he quite clearly should top the table

Watched the full out-out show again last night and we were all in tears, he's fantastic.

I wouldn't pay to see Lee Evans or Jimmy Carr but the others are okay. Agree with F A B and Haydos  about Micky Flanagan though. Definitely the top comic atm.

If someone told me it was a list of the top 5 annoying twats on the planet I'd probably not argue, shouting a load of crap, being bendy and dumb 'observational' jibes really don't make comedy in my opinion.

I swear he gets funnier every time I see him. His spying-on-the-neighbours bit floored me, and when he did his lightbulb moment after the lady has left the house ("I gotta have a wank") I was in stitches and bright-red in the face. Probably shouldn't have been watching with the missus and her mum. Definitely going to see him next tour

Back to female comics - Josie Long is very likeable, and I have on occasion found Sarah Millican fairly funny (but only as a guest on panel shows) but her talk show and stand-up is dreadful. I don't understand how the typical female standup routine seems so popular - 10 minutes on periods, 10 minutes on the husband's sexual inadequacy, 10 minutes on how all men are useless at everything and an encore about periods. Chuck in a few period jokes for good measure, and an unexpected bit about how the husband thinks he's a sex machine but he in fact has a useless stumpy cock and everyone hates him because he's useless at everything. Including sex. Because he has a stumpy cock and she's havin' a period!! WHEEYYYYY!!!!

Saw John Bishop a couple of months ago (got free tickets through work) and he did a Q and A at the end.

The fact my question to him got a bigger laugh than his answer sums it up.

There are decent women comics, sadly rarely get on the "panel show" circuit mind. For me Stewart Lee is the best comedian going by a country mile, can see why people dislike him though.

I agree about Stewart Lee, he is on another level.

John Bishop is a comedian? Whoa.

I'm not a massive fan of Sarah Millican's stand up routine, but when she's being interviewed or interviewing someone else, she's great. Just needs someone to bounce off (not physically)

Seen Stewart Lee last year and he was brilliant, very acquired taste though.

Sarah Millican is OK at a stretch but I cannot understand why people think Miranda Kerr (or Mrs Brown of Mrs Browns Boys for that matter) are funny. Lowest common denominator of comedy...
