Wasilewski Helps Tighten Defence But Poor Run Continues

Barclays Premier League
King Power Stadium, Leicester

Leicester City 0

West Bromwich Albion 1
Cambiasso 47′ (og)

Marcin Wasilewski made his first appearance of the season and impressed enough to claim man of the match in City's 1-0 home defeat to West Bromwich Albion. While not spectacular, Leicester's overall performance demonstrated some improvement over recent games, particularly in defence where Pearson's men were unlucky not to keep a clean sheet as Esteban Cambiasso's unfortunate own goal proved decisive. Despite little in the way of quality service, Jamie Vardy's persistence and tireless running off the ball saw him claim second place behind Wasyl. Leicester started with four central midfielders in a diamond formation, and Matty James excelled above the other midfielders in this system to finish third.

David Nugent continues to be rated extremely poorly by the voting supporters earning him last place once again. Paul Konchesky put in a display which lacked composure as he struggled to cope without his usual left-sided support, partially as a side-effect of the narrow midfield diamond. Danny Drinkwater had a noticeably poor game by his high standards and rounded off the bottom three. When the team was announced it seemed clear that manager Nigel Pearson would live or die by his unusual selection, with his rating showing what the supporters thought of this tactical choices as he was voted lower than any of the 14 players involved. However the vast majority of supporters thankfully still have confidence in the manager, with a few poor results not enough to swing opinion as Pearson remained above 80% confidence.

The most harrowing aspect of the defeat is that West Brom did not demonstrate any real quality of their own, consequently being voted the worst opposition City have faced this season. Despite City's own mediocre performance, the 3 points for the Baggies were certainly fortuitous, while 0-0 would probably be the most appropriate scoreline considering the general lack of quality on show. With the originally assigned referee Mark Clattenburg suspended as punishment for attending an Ed Sheeran concert, Stuart Attwell and his team of officials came in and were also voted as the worst officials City fans have seen this season. There were a number of strange decisions throughout against both teams, with the most high-profile incident being WBA's claim for a red card when Saido Berahino headbutted Marcin Wasilewski's elbow.

Konchesky is a player you know about, his preferred pass is down the line but with no winger that was cut off. Never mind players giving him passes with two players surrounding him and no obvious way out I think he did ok by all accounts.

WBA given a worse average than our team? I know this game isn't the best example, but I feel this comes from our fans not showing the respect towards teams like WBA. Do a lot still think we are superior or equal to them?

Thought De Laet would be about the same as Konch, they are the weak links in that formation. They saw so much of the ball and they just aren't capable of doing anything with it. You need ball playing full-backs to play a midfield diamond.

We were at least equal. It was a 0-0 level game settled by an own goal, neither side were great and WBA were hardly impressive.

as bad as we were they were just as bad. we had king miss a very good chance, as well as one or two other half chances. the only way the game was finishing anything other than a 0-0 last on match of the day never to be spoken about again game was if something ridiculous happened. which it did. so they won. they were rubbish, like burnley and newcastle before them who we have also surrendered too by being equally as bad, if not worse.

yes, as i said in the match rating voting he'll get low marks because he got tackled once or twice, but he'd have got just as low marks if he'd looked up, saw no options but hoofed it out of play anyway. the diamond is an atrocious idea if you've got 4 incredibly narrow midfielders, and it becomes an even worse idea if none of them show for the ball when a full back has it. at times he was being pressured (and tackled/forced into a mistake) by a striker, a winger and a central midfielder whilst we offered him no help whatsoever.

In fairness despite how bad we were I thought West Brom were even worse, didn't create one decent goal scoring opportunity, conceded a fair few to us but we just couldn't put them away.

As I said, maybe not the best example as I thought they were poor too. Fair enough if some think they were worse. I just think it's a bit harsh, given they come here, keep a clean sheet and win. That's the mark of a solid side who can win scrappy affairs like this, even if they relied on a bit of luck.

Not a huge RDL fan but he was easily our best player imo, especially when considering the horrid role he was given. Wasyl was solid.

Agree with the ratings.

I can't think of what Matty James did? I can't remember seeing him apart from that shot that trickled at about 0.1 mph.

lol

RDL's crossing was utterly dreadful. What on earth our strikers are meant to do with deliveries like those, no-one knows. Shows what you get when you don't play with proper wide men who can actually cross a ball.

Defensively he was ok.

Do you have the seasonal average for each player?

Not without a little bit of work. To be honest I prefer not to publish them until the monthly / seasonal summaries as I think it could skew the way people vote in future.

The problem is that RDL appears to be our only real attacking option. Defensively he's OK cos we've got 4 centre-midfields to cover him when he goes forward.

On the other side though, no idea why Konchesky was picked. With a midfield diamond you need a wing-back, not a left-back. That formation was taylor-made for Schlupp on the left.

With us chasing the game, I just could not fathom why we didn't bring on Mahrez or Schlupp.

No doubt about it my mind.

The first half was dead even. Neither of us could've claimed to have been the better team at that point but after that it was largely Leicester attacks with West Brom offering very little in response. The scoreline will often not give you a good impression of how a game went.

Agreed. I wouldn't have argued with a draw (goalless or score draw) at full time. Both teams offered very little.

I just read that Matty James and Wasilewski made Guardian TOTW. James made the most accurate crosses (7) and Cambiasso also had joint most interceptions. I can't even remember James making a cross? Although I suppose set pieces do count there...

Imo James was our best midfielder on the day. Tackled, ran forward carrying the ball, mainly getting fouled in the process to bring matters a stop without any action from the ref. Not his best performance I would agree, but a did more in attempting to shake things up than others.

They set up to frustrate us and hit on the counter, which they did succesfully. We set up to break them down, and we failed to create more than a couple of real chances. The tactics and stats pretty much nullify eachother, so in this case the only good impression you get of how the game went and which team did best is reflected in the scoreline. They got what they came for, we didn't. Sometimes football really isn't that complicated :dunno:
