Star Wars: The Force Awakens

I meant the movies, not the books  Apologise for not being clear about that.

Ah right. Well that's fair enough. And yes, good as they are they are pretty watered down and I can see your point about the similarity.

I really didn't like it... Even the nostalgia didn't work for me.

It had familiar elements, but didn't feel like the star wars I remember. Perhaps nothing ever will as I'm not a kid any more.

Dialogue and acting was poor and distracting.

Fuuuuuck I couldn't stop smiling the whole way through. I'll need to watch it a few times to know how good it really is compared to the rest but it had pretty much everything I wanted. The Star Wars I know and love felt like it was back, the atmosphere, emotion, music, comedy and tension were all there, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Are we going to retitle this a spoilers thread now?

Could make another thread?

Everything felt too fast and frantic, almost like they were trying to retell all three of the first movies in one film.

Character progression is far too quick, and far too much action.

Oh well

Foxestalk is the only place I've heard anyone say it's bad, so thankfully I'm probably gonna enjoy it.

There are good elements, I like Finn. I think it could be better when the old cast step aside eventually.

I'm just not a big action fan, Star Wars originals had it, but it wasn't nonstop and it wasn't so big and brash, it was quite simple and muted. They did what I was worried about and tried to cram it full of big action sequences.

It lacked a real story, felt hard to engage with the characters. I agree with you, it turned out to be another Hollywood movie with wham bam thank you mam.

I thought it was awesome, delivered on every level and sets everything up nicely for the final two chapters. Fantastic, far better than those prequels. I certainly felt for the characters throughout, and they were built up brilliantly throughout.

Just back from watching it. It was never going to be as good as I had hoped & it isn't but it's still very good. Love Rey & Finn but I thought the bad guys just lacked something. I enjoyed the nods back to the old films but a couple of things felt like they were just squeezed in for the sake of it.

I thought Kylo Ren was the best of the new characters. Episode 7 is pretty much a reboot of A New Hope in many ways, plenty of plot threads to take into episode 8 & 9. Very enjoyable film, very fast paced, you could probably do with another film to explain what happened between Jedi and TFA.

I didn't think they over-did it with the nods back to the old ones at all. It wasn't perfect but it was great, lots of mystery as to what will happen next, of course as part 1 of any trilogy will have, it sets it up perfectly for a brilliant second (eighth) chapter.

I think we should have a thread for spoiler discussion, but not for a while, after boxing day maybe, as I know myself and I can't be the only one no matter how much you don't want things to be spoiled clicking on the thread or anything with the spoiler tag is so tempting it's just unfair on the people who have been waiting so long for this to give them the temptation, it's hard enough steering clear on the internet, never mind what I'm sure is, to many people, their primary source of forum interaction.

Amazed that there is any negativity. Thought it was wonderful and to the contrary of other opinion, thought the action was very consistent with the original 3 films.

New characters are superb and they've left more than enough intrigue for the next film.

I liked the fact that they didnt whack in a super bad guy straight away. The fact the main bad guy was flawed from the start I thought was a good move.

I came out of it relieved that it was better than I thought it would be and very happy with what i'd just watched.

Can understand people thinking the development of Rey's character was rushed, but the individual Star Wars films are not stand alone. If the following films contain no explanation as to her rapid progression, fair enough but I think the next film will equalise that criticism.

Loved it.

Fvcking loved it.

I'm watching it again, but in full fanboy this time.

I've had some time to think about it, and there is a lot of good stuff in there. I do really like the new characters, BB8, Finn, Kylo, Poe are great. I'm not 100% sold on Rey yet, I thought her acting was quite poor in places. Although it's her first film role and she got better. It feels and looks much more like star wars than the prequels.

I still think there was too much action. I know Betts said it seemed in keeping to him, but I think if you took a stop watch to this and compared to a new hope it would be double or triple, that's what it felt like. Probably more lightsaber fighting that the first three combined!!

As I touched on Rays character progressed far too quickly for me. It was jarring and just didn't seem right, compared to what went before in previous.

Some of the dialogue and acting was crappy. I don't think I'd have missed Leia and 3po (who seems 3 stone heavier) if they weren't in it at all. Some of the nods to the first three films were distracting and I found them taking me out of the moment, when I was actually starting to get into the film.

I also fecking detested a certain cgi thing that happens when certain new characters meet certain old characters on a ship. You know, the but with the bloke from Glasgow.  I'd happily delete that whole scene.

Hopefully I managed to navigate that without any spoilers.

So I went to see this last night, after all the fantastic reviews and everyone raving about it. I have to say, I was pretty disappointed. Don't get me wrong, it's a decent film, but I'm with Babylon on this.

The character development was far too quick, particularly with Finn and Rey, and I felt Rey's character and acting was poor on both parts which left me wondering why she'd been cast and why she wasn't developed more effectively. The film probably could/'should have been another half hour longer to allow some characters time to develop more and build up some connection to them. Some of the nostalgic nods to the past kept my attention, though some were shoehorned in just for that reason and didn't totally need to be there. The opening sequence, for me, was absolutely terrible. I genuinely thought it was building up to be a star wars themed advert, but when it kept going, I couldn't believe it. A personal annoyance too, was Kylo. Well, he was good, quite liked him actually, but I just couldn't help thinking of

Andy Samberg

lol (probably don't need a spoiler there, but ah well).

Despite all that, I did quite enjoy it, I was just a little disappointed and thought it could/should have been better.

I think it'd actually enjoy it more second time around, I went in with such high expectations they were probably never going to be met.

Agree on the first scene, was disappointing. Also, is it just me, or were the shots of ships in space actually less realistic looking that was they made almost 40 years ago?
