Bamba's Babes Posted 7 December 2014 Posted 7 December 2014 Has James' recent performances warranted a starting place in the team? The fact that almost every member of our squad has been poor for a while has not escaped me but James' recent performances have been very poor. Set Pieces - Is James really our best option on dead ball situations? Why is Cambiasso not taking them? He did very well against Stoke. This is a massive oversight by the management for me. Chances on goal - Why do all our chances fall to him? Don't get me wrong, I'm pleased that he is putting himself in the right positions to have a pop but his execution on the whole is not good enough. Drinkwater for example was dispatching these all last year. I would prefer to give someone else an opportunity now. Cambiasso has the xfactor pass and can score a goal. I like Matty but he's had a run in the team and his performances haven't been improving.
ealingfox Posted 7 December 2014 Posted 7 December 2014 We should be bringing on Drinkwater for Cambiasso second half. James looks twice the player with Drinkwater there with him. Thought James was awful today tbh.
Jimmy Posted 7 December 2014 Posted 7 December 2014 his free kicks were awful but he put in some decent corners, but he really needs to learn to shoot
DennisNedry Posted 7 December 2014 Posted 7 December 2014 Really like Matty James. He was fantastic last season. In the last few games though, he hasn't been good enough. Needs a rest, time for Drinkwater to come back into the side.

Brooksy Posted 7 December 2014 Posted 7 December 2014 He can't even kick a ball properly. Nowhere near good enough.
Corky Posted 7 December 2014 Posted 7 December 2014 Our best pairing this season has been King and Hammond. They are quite limited but effective and work in a pair well. But one goes missing all the time and the other is too slow. Our best attacking performances have been with them in the side. I don't know if it will continue but King seems to have been discarded when he's the midfielder who has looked comfortable with the step up.
JonnyBoy Posted 7 December 2014 Posted 7 December 2014 .... Shouldn't start again this season. I think my 8 year old cousin has a better shot than him
RowlattsFox Posted 7 December 2014 Posted 7 December 2014 Set pieces he needs to stay clear off but in general play he isn't too bad. Willing to have the ball in tight spaces, and looks to drive us forward but he needs better quality in front of him. Drinkwater in a more advanced role against City for me, with James and Cambiasso behind.
DB11 Posted 7 December 2014 Posted 7 December 2014 Matty James must be rota'd to be the scapegoat this week then.
jimmeh Posted 7 December 2014 Posted 7 December 2014 Ive never rated him. So slow. Reminds me of fryatt
ealingfox Posted 7 December 2014 Posted 7 December 2014 Drinkwater has been really poor this season though Was he though? He was underwhelming in some games but played well against Stoke and Man U. He deserves another chance. Our #1 midfielder coming in to this season.
theessexfox Posted 7 December 2014 Posted 7 December 2014 Good, strong player on the ball generally but he shouldn't shoot or take set pieces.
BoyJones Posted 7 December 2014 Posted 7 December 2014 I like Matty James, his close control is excellent - however, he can't cross a ball or shoot to save his life. In the last three games he has worked his socks off, but contributed very little or nothing going forward. I believe Drinky will return on Saturday, particularly against their hard tackling midfield. Matty has had his chance but not really seized it.

I must have said this three weeks ago...God knows why King isn't in that side. Set pieces he needs to stay clear off but in general play he isn't too bad. Fox Ulike Posted 7 December 2014 Posted 7 December 2014 He's being played out of his best position. He is actually the defensive midfielder we are crying out for, but he's being played too far up the pitch.
Manchesterred Posted 7 December 2014 Posted 7 December 2014 I'd say over the last few games his game in play has been good, he gets in to all the right places he's a box to box midfielder. As soon as 1 of his goals goes in there will be plenty more to come. Just like this I've posted. At MUFC he scored 15-20 a season like this. If u take away the set pieces he would be up there with cambiasso, Set peices I think it's time for a change, he will score a lot more goals hanging on the edge waiting for the bits to come his way. He's getting a lot of flak for his overall performances but I think it's just his set peices that r standing out.. I like the lad he's got a good head on his shoulders and he creates plenty of forward momentum, a change in set peices and he will be back to his full potential. Some of us seen to have short memories, he was one of our best players last year and has had a couple of man of the match performances so far this year. We need to get behind him to help him improve, not get on his back to bring him down.
kingfox Posted 7 December 2014 Posted 7 December 2014 Don't forget a couple weeks ago, we were praising James for a decent performance against Sunderland. He has quality in his locker, we seen bundles of it in the Championship last season, glimpses of it this season; however today his set piece delivery was awful, shooting awful, constantly got overran in midfield & was slow to react to second balls. There were times in that match, where I said to myself we are actually missing Dean Hammond.

I can't believe people can't see this. Why? At the minute Cambiasso is trying to play too far forward becuase he knows someone has to create and he's the only one seemingly capable. Give him some help by having someone in front of him and allow him to sit alongside James.
Grewks Posted 7 December 2014 Posted 7 December 2014 The only player who has the bottle to try anything though... His quality is there.....but like everyone else, no-one is playing well. I'm not gonna complain about the lad when he, mahrez and esteban are the only ones looking to drive us on. p.s. Another ironic point - We all said last season it was great to have someone who could take a corner......Are corners now harder to take in the premier league? :xmaslaugh:
Stadt Posted 7 December 2014 Posted 7 December 2014 Ive never rated him. So slow. Reminds me of fryattHahaha
inckley fox Posted 7 December 2014 Posted 7 December 2014 I thought James' set pieces were dreadful, as was his shooting, but he did a job in midfield. And Cambiasso did well, in my opinion. The game was lost because of a lack of awareness from Schlupp / Konchesky and another by Moore. Perhaps even an injury to Ulloa. The defeat was a case of an injury up front, and a lack of physical presence / awareness at the back, possibly a dodgy refereeing decision when we were looking strong... and even looking at the wider game I see no reason to focus on our midfield. I actually felt we put them under a lot of pressure when they were on the ball, and tracked back well for much of the time.

There were times in that match, where I said to myself we are actually missing Dean Hammond. We are simply missing a midfield ball-winner. He don't even have to be much good at football. Just break up attacks. Stick to position, perform his role. I've said this until I'm blue in the face. Someone, I notice, has given Cambiasso the customary 8 out of ten... For me, and I said this in the in-game thread, he ran out of steam again after about 60 minutes. When they took hold, you pretty much knew how it was going to end. We need a drum-beater, to enable the flutist to do his best work further forward. Cambiasso and James, in a flat 4-4-2 is not the way to go. There's not enough energy there. I can't believe Pearson did this again. What is he doing? He's digging his own grave

Let him do his passing where it's gonna hurt the opposition.
