Usually take my girlfriend away for her birthday end of January for a little city break. Last few years we've done Dublin, Budapest and Prague. 

 

Looking at maybe Lisbon or Porto potentially. Any recommendations on which would be better or any alternative

Went to Porto last year and it’s class. When I went it was a toss up between there and Lisbon but Porto won out. Not been to Lisbon so not sure about there

I’ve done both in the last few years. Lisbon is a great city, fantastic food and lots to do. Porto is also a great choice, very different vibe to Lisbon I found. Was due to go in Feb this year but changed it to the May due to the weather amongst a few other things going on. Can be quite rainy around Jan/Feb in Porto. Lisbon in the Feb a few years ago was decent weather, high teens temperatures and sunny, but might’ve been lucky. Malta or Sicily may not be a bad shout for a January break.

Much prefer Porto. Didn't enjoy Lisbon that much to be honest. 

 

Belgrade as an esoteric suggestion that your girlfriend will probably hate the thought of but end up loving. 

 

Bolzano for a small city, lots of snow, cosy beer halls and pretty mountain villages, plus Sudtirol are at home to Palermo at the end of January and I'm thinking of going if you want to bin off your girlfriend for an afternoon.

Agree Porto over Lisbon but worth considering what Derbs said, weather likely crap in Porto in Jan

Day 3 in Trieste,  would recommend it. 

Cheap flights from Stansted and a great pavement cafe / resteraunt culture. 

 

It's a mix of Austria, Slovenia and Italy. 

3 days is probobly enough. 

 

Moving to Ljubljana tomorrow for Slovenia v Scotland on Saturday.

Porto if you like the slosh, Lisbon if you are foodies

One of my favorite cities. Had a great week there in my early twenties and then passed through it a lot when traveling to and from the Balkans. Very romantic and slightly elegiac vibe. Read 'Trieste and the meaning of nowhere' by Jan Morris if you haven't already.

I've just come back from there. 

 

Bled - Trieste - Udine - Verona 

 

I think I did perfect durations. Trieste for two full days but as you say a really unique vibe to play - Vienna with an Italian twist, a meal at Buffet Da Papi was great. I went to Miramare which is an incredible castle built by the Hapsburgs. 

 

Udine was a big surprise. City of just around 100k but utterly beautiful. Possibly even more Germanic - particularly some of the bars there. 

 

Verona I enjoyed but I got very lucky with accommodation which was in this cracking neighbourhood which meant eating out was more affordable and less stressful. Verona is full worth a weekend away. Found a cracking craft beer bar called Santa Maria but in general, it was a Rome vibe but with significantly less tourists. You can visit Lake Garda very easy as well.

I spent a few hours in that very same craft beer bar, about 3 years ago. Bloody lovely place, had a nice chat with the owner too.

Two days in cappodocia - a massive area solely for tourists to go on the balloons. Vastly overpriced but actually worth it. Amazing sights, otherworldly. Really worth it.

2.5 days in Istanbul. Huge and very cool city. Nice food obvs but great shopping too (a lot of brands’ clothes are made here so the quality is good), culture/history, Bosporus cruise, hammam, Asian side is a good vibe. A unique place, not Asian or European. It’s a shame it’s international week as I’d have loved to go to a match.

From raving until 6am in Ibiza two weeks ago to getting up at 4am to do adventure stuff here…next week is time to reset the body clock
