Matt Posted 8 January 2015 Posted 8 January 2015 I wouldn't say the BBC is that strong any more either, in fact it's the weakest it's been in my lifetime. Murphy is articulate but doesn't say anything all that interesting, likewise Jenas, Savage is a prize gomper, Garth Crooks still manages to find employment, Phil Neville talks like somebody putting on an impression of Phil Neville, Shearer (although he's improved considerably to when he first started) still crowbars in a "he done that wohwl deer" every time he speaks, Kevin Kilbane is blander than ASDA Smart Price wafer thin ham, and both are 80% water. All true and i'm no Shearer fan, can't stand him tbh, but that said they I still stand by what i've said saying BBC is alot better than ITV. Perhaps that's more of a reflection of how bad ITV is though, not that BBC is necessarily that much better.
Unabomber Posted 8 January 2015 Posted 8 January 2015 Who do people like? I like Andy Hinchcliffe and Bill Leslie from Sky
Vacamion Posted 8 January 2015 Posted 8 January 2015 He's made me want to throw stuff at the telly more than once. For such an awful pundit, he's had a hell of a good run.
AKCJ Posted 8 January 2015 Posted 8 January 2015 I quite like Kilbane but he lacks personality He's really good on final score.
HowardsBulletHeader Posted 8 January 2015 Posted 8 January 2015 Who do people like? I like Andy Hinchcliffe and Bill Leslie from Sky Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher, Martin Tyler..
Corky Posted 8 January 2015 Posted 8 January 2015 So is it only england games on itv from next season? I think the criticism goes a bit over the top to be honest. I don't, during European games he turns into an enthusiastic supporter of the English team at the expense of doing his job. The Liverpool match recently was quite awful co-commentary, offering no insight and just yelping, shouting, nearly celebrating wildly when Liverpool almost got a winner. It was Tyldesley commentating and Townsend being a well-paid fan. As Scouse said it was amusing stuff but he can have no complaints if he's leaving because he's not a good co-commentator at all.
ScouseFox Posted 8 January 2015 Posted 8 January 2015 i don't listen to him much but if you do every now and then and don't take it seriously it is actually quite funny. he nearly had a breakdown when henderson had that chance that rolled towards the line but didn't go in. also a minor note but people always seem to have a go at him for "supporting" english teams in europe, yet when gary neville had his goalgasm (so sorry) when torres scored vs barca, it was one of the best bits of commentary ever? if townsend had made anything like such a ludicrous noise because an english team had scored everyone would've been crying about how he should've commented on the goal and not been biased. i don't like andy townsend btw. he's shit at his job.
Guest ttfn Posted 9 January 2015 Posted 9 January 2015 I loved the insight he brought to the big occasions. "So Andy there's 15 minutes left here - this game's heading for a 0-0 - is there anything England can do to change it?" "I dunno Clive. Jermain Defoe or someone." At least he went out on a high. That Neanderthal roar as a late deflection off Jordan Henderson trickled into the arms of the Basel goalkeeper will always be one of my favourite Townsend memories.
Guest seanfox778 Posted 9 January 2015 Posted 9 January 2015 He's a bit of a douche but there's a lot worse than him out there. I think he works for the official BPL network too as I see him in the studios when they show live games in other countries.
Bugg Posted 9 January 2015 Posted 9 January 2015 Add Garth Crooks to that and I'll agree with you I like Garth Crooks. Watching him have a meltdown over nothing on final score every week is classic.
walkerleeds Posted 9 January 2015 Posted 9 January 2015 In terms of knowledge and insight Danny Murphy and Kevin Kilbane are the best on the BBC. Problem is they are probably the most uninspiring duo in the history of mankind.
Unabomber Posted 9 January 2015 Posted 9 January 2015 The worst AT moment was when Arsenal were playing some French team in the champions league and they had a shot (the french) and it looked like it was going in and Andy yelled "GET IN!" only for it to miss narrowly, from that moment I knew he was a gonner, it was so cringeworthy for him.
Stuntman_Mike Posted 9 January 2015 Posted 9 January 2015 Actually disappointed by this! He was that clueless he was entertaining.
Unabomber Posted 9 January 2015 Posted 9 January 2015 Thing is it was entertaining but the fact that he was getting paid for it ruined it. If anything he should have been paying for the opportunity.
Stadt Posted 9 January 2015 Posted 9 January 2015 It's the really obvious shit he says, "If he sticks it in the net there the game changes."Thanks for your professional insight there Andy.
phg Posted 10 January 2015 Posted 10 January 2015 What a shame. Irony at its finest! Amazed he's got work lined up with other employers.
Mark 'expert' Lawrenson Posted 11 January 2015 Posted 11 January 2015 Garth Crooks is a buffoon, a few weeks back he was on final score and started rabbiting on about James Bond for some unknown reason, and mentioned Craig Daniel nobody picked up on his glaring error, I cannot help thinking if it were Sky he would of been (good humourdly) ripped to shreds. As for ITV and it's football coverage I have never rated it, cannot put my finger on the reason but they just don't do it right. I always watch the FA cup final on the BBC, and World Cup finals the beeb always do a far better job.
