Footballers Wages

We all know that the Premier League teams pay huge amounts to their players and it naturally decreases as you go down the leagues, bar the odd exceptions.

So I was just thinking, mainly because I have mutual friends of a few lads who play in Scotland's Div1. After a trawl through the forums of Scottish football (which wasn't too pleasant), it seems that the lads in those leagues earn around 300-450 a week? Surely this isn't correct. That means they probably earn a salary between £24-28k.

I was just wondering whether people do play football on short contracts, for such small amounts of money, full time. Now I'm the same age as these guys, and don't earn much more than them, but I know I've got a skill set, and experience which would allow me to walk into a similar job or better should my contract not be renewed in 2021. Where these guys won't know if they're working from one year to the next.

Just a thought, and I don't expect much response. Am I completely wide of the mark here?

It doesn't surprise me in the slightest. Scottish PL football is horrific to say nothing of the leagues below. Poor attendances, and a poor standard of football means clubs can only pay such a miniscule amount. That said, I bet the lads you know are a lot more down to earth than the likes of Nile Ranger and Ravel Morrison.

A friend of mine plays football in the Vanarama conference for Nuneaton Town. They are only part time so he's got another job. He's only on around £450 a week playing football.

Also when the season has finished till they report back for pre-season training he doesn't get any money. So he'll have about 6 weeks off without pay.

The differences between professional, semi-professional and amateur status basically reflect the differences in wages that those clubs can afford to pay. Most semi-pro players and below need another job alongside football.

The wages quoted for Scottish League 1 in the OP seem about right and these lads are probably earning a lot more than other local jobs pay to 20-30 year olds in Forfar and Stenhousemuir.

I know someone who plays for Ross County and finished an Economics degree from Edinburgh. Pretty sure he'd earn more outside of football, especially in the long term.

Someone I went to school with plays for Sheffield Wednesday. One of their better players too. I believe he's on a decent now (as expected).

Weird really because most of my year are either scrapping away either in work, at Uni, or even unemployed and one is just a professional footballer lol

Nobody is forcing them to play football instead of getting a normal job, but if they've got any sense they'll be putting plans in place for what they'll do once they finish playing.

A lad I know got himself an engineering degree part time while he was playing in the conference. Injury stopped his playing career at about 28 and he got plenty of offers from engineering firms (this was in 2009 as well in the worst of the financial crisis). He ended up going to America to coach football to a youth club funded by some middle eastern tycoon. Earns a fortune by all accounts. Moral of the story, if they're smart about it then opportunities abound.

I'm sure I read somewhere that Jon Stevenson was getting £100 a week at Oadby

I think Bardon are paying that for step 6 football.  There are clubs at a low level that are paying well and hoping they can walk through the leagues.

I know the village I'm from used to pay ex cobblers players 300 a week yet anyone else would get 30 quid a match and 10 If you was a sub.

I suppose it all depends on how much money the club has to throw at getting promotion

Of course theyre only on that amount of money.

If youre talking 100k a week footballers, youre talking about 0.0000000000000000000001% of people who play the game

I was talking to a mate the other day and we reckoned there's probably about 17 or 18 premiership players on £100k+

Terry, Fabregas, Costa, Cech and Hazard.

Kompany, Agüero, Silva and Toure

Gerrard

Rooney, Van Persie, Mata, Falcao and Di Maria

Walcott and Özil

Lower championship players probably don't live a life too dissimilar to the average person, obviously they're much more comfortable but if they're on £150,000 a year they can't afford super cars or massive houses, they probably have to stash their spare cash for when they retire.

He's probably on £25,000 a week so I'd day he's leasing it

Correct.

Didn't George Taft have a Mercedes when he was in our youth team? Surely he would have been spending most of his wages paying it back every month.
