Genetic Britain.

Quite an interesting study that's been in the news over the last couple of days showing the different ethnic groups of people from Britain that dates back over 1,500 years. Been reading quite a bit of it and it's very interesting.

The interesting conclusions appear to show...

The Welsh have DNA that goes back to the earliestsettlers of Britain (although the different between North and South Wales is huge).

The People of Cornwall really are different, genetic makeup from the rest of Britain is akin to it having borders of a different nation.

The Celts don't appear to be a a unique group.

The Vikings reputation for 'raping and pillaging' is undeserved as they've barely left a trace.

I'm trying to peer at these maps on my phone so am I getting this wrong or do you think I'm North Welsh?

Looking at that, from South West Wales I've regrettably got more in common with the sweaty Ulster Scotch no?

Great news for UKIP supporters, you are half German and a Quarter French!

Unfortunately, you got that the wrong way round but as its in my dna to surrender, I agree with you. :P

I'm not sure how people in Lancashire will feel at being classified as West Yorkshire.

In all it merely shows how pointless national boundaries are.

Wrong, I am Roman. A friend and I, actually walked the full length of Hadrian's Wall, (Bowness to Wallsend) wearing replica armour, (loaned to us from "The Ermine Street Guard.") We did it for charity, but loved every minute of it. I was much younger then, of course

I have always considered myself Roman, but that is a different story. I may tell it one day.

Also love this site. Maps the density of people with your surname in different parts of the country.

That is a cool site.  My surname's very common from central England all the way up through Scotland, but rarely seen in the south which matches my experience of growing up in the south and being told by my parents what a common surname we have, yet never actually meeting or even hearing of anyone else with it(save other family members ofc).

I'm very surprised by the Viking thing.  People always think I'm Scandinavian when they see me so I've long been convinced of its truth.  I'm going to pretend I never learned this and stick with the Viking card though, much more interesting than being some Norman-Saxon lovechild.

I'm NW. I do know the are some from up there with my name but have never found a direct relationship. They moved around a bit in the 1800's and early 1900's. the split up. A little bit of Irish but mostly English and unknown.

I didn't realise I was a quarter German!!

Perhaps you should change your name to "Dr. von The Singh" or "Dr. The Singh Helmut" (making sure not to misspell that last one)?

Is that unique element to the Yorkshire dna demonstrated in the tendency to announce they're from Yorkshire and be immensely proud for no reason within about 5 minutes of meeting you I wonder?
