ithuriel Posted 4 April 2015 Posted 4 April 2015 Received a phone call just this morning from someone with very bad English claiming to be from Windows saying my computer was being hacked and they were going to help me by going step through step in protecting my PC. Told him it was a nice try.
bovril Posted 4 April 2015 Posted 4 April 2015 I got one of those last month and when I asked where he was from he said "Leicester".
Fox92 Posted 4 April 2015 Posted 4 April 2015 Been going on for years those calls. I got one the other month said something like I was getting infected every time I used to the Internet. I was like "go on then, who is my ISP" and he was just repeating what he first said

I was like "go on then, who is my ISP" and he was just repeating what he first said Yep, I get 2 or 3 of these calls a year. I always ask them as they know my computer is at risk can they tell me my IP address at which point they usually hang up.
ithuriel Posted 4 April 2015 Author Posted 4 April 2015 Hmm in future, if I'm in the mood, I might play along and see how long it is before they get frustrated and hang up.
The Doctor Posted 4 April 2015 Posted 4 April 2015 I've always thought it would be fun to waste their time by pretending to be a doddering old lady thinking they meant your house windows.
DB11 Posted 4 April 2015 Posted 4 April 2015 They happen quite a lot and one method to scare you is to direct you to system logs and say there are loads of errors - which is true, there will be, but they are natural and nothing to worry about. They then offer to connect to your PC via remote access and then install malware on it, at which point your PC becomes under the control of a botnet. If I've got the time I play along for as long as I can until they hang up after giving me abuse

Trav Le Bleu Posted 4 April 2015 Posted 4 April 2015 I got one saying they were from BT and that my computer was affecting their line, which was interesting since I am on Virgin's cable network.
Vlad the Fox Posted 4 April 2015 Posted 4 April 2015 I've had a few of these over the last year. Reckon they're from Manchester, last time they rang I went along with him then after a couple of minutes told him I was from metropolitan police fraud unit. Phone went down on a flash.
StanSP Posted 4 April 2015 Posted 4 April 2015 Received a phone call just this morning from someone with very bad English claiming to be from Windows saying my computer was being hacked and they were going to help me by going step through step in protecting my PC. Told him it was a nice try. That's not new at all
MC Prussian Posted 4 April 2015 Posted 4 April 2015 Received a phone call just this morning from someone with very bad English claiming to be from Windows saying my computer was being hacked and they were going to help me by going step through step in protecting my PC. Told him it was a nice try. Just pull the same trick on them and try to "help" yourself... Keep them on the line for as long as you can, whilst you talking them into buying or installing something they don't need or that is harmful.
separator Posted 4 April 2015 Posted 4 April 2015 Always plenty of fun that can be had with these types of calls...
Rincewind Posted 4 April 2015 Posted 4 April 2015 Tell them that yours is a premium number and then put them on hold.
