In an open letter to Esteban Cambiasso, James Sharpe says a big thank you to the Leicester City midfielder for his contribution to this unforgettable Premier League season.

Dear Esteban,

When news broke back in August that Leicester City were interested in you, I received a text message from a friend. It said: "I will cry tears of joy if we sign Cambiasso".

He had seen your famous World Cup goal for Argentina, your Champions League victory under Jose Mourinho. Your name alone was a huge coup for the club.

I was at your first press conference. You were the only City player I can remember who came with an entourage.

There was genuine excitement but also a lingering concern. Had you come because you wanted to embrace the challenge of keeping a newly-promoted side in the Premier League, after a career spent winning every trophy under the sun?

Or were you here for one last pay cheque before heading off into the comfy slippers of retirement? You wouldn't have been the first, there have been several of those over the years.

Would you still be able to do it? That was a worry, too.

We'd seen what you did in Milan and Madrid. But we've seen other footballers fade in their 30s, their talents diminished by the passing of time.

Those concerns were quickly eradicated. You were here because you wanted to be. The way you celebrated your equaliser against Manchester Unitedicon1.png, your constant instructing, reassuring, calming.

And you still had it, too. At times it seemed you were on a different wavelength to anyone else on the field.

You spoke with such passion before West Hamicon1.png at home. Leicester were seven points adrift then, with nine games left. It was all over. But you wanted to tell the whole city that Leicester was not dead.

No one had believed before but, suddenly, they listened. Turns out you were right all along.

It would be wrong to give you all the credit for Leicester's miraculous escape, though. You were one cog, albeit an influential one, inside the City machine.

You said that yourself when you accepted your player of the year award. Every member of the squad deserves one, you said. Everyone played their part.

But you have stolen the hearts of City fansicon1.png like no other player I can remember. Never have the supporters, en masse, been so united behind one man.

I have spoken to middle-aged men who have had your name printed on shirts for the first time. The club shop ran out of 'A's twice. Others have tried to get days off work, in your honour, citing religious reasons. Some even shaved their heads, for goodness sake.

You have given Leicester fans moments they will cherish forever – your equaliser against United, your goal against West Ham, disagreeing with goal-line technology at West Bromicon1.png, telling a ball boy to calm down, picking up a plastic bag and trying to put it in the referee's pocket, that pass against Chelsea, your attempt to heal a Swansea player who had cramp. There have been many.

And then, finally, that bow. The end-of-season bow.

It was a fitting way to bring your season to a close, like a magician stooping in front of his awestruck audience.

It was as concerning as it was joyous. Was it merely a celebration or were you signing off in style, saying thank you and goodnight, biddingicon1.png farewell to the City faithful?

Who knows. Perhaps even you don't know yet. You have said you want time to decide what your future holds.

You might decide to walk away. Quit while you are on top.

It will be difficult, if impossible, to better what you achieved this season. You have embraced Leicester City, and it with you, and helped pull off the greatest of all great escapes. If you leave, you will depart a legend.

One season – a Leicester legend. Others have come close – Gerry Daly, Kevin Campbell, Les Ferdinand. You've eclipsed them all.

You will doubtless have an endless queue of suitors – probably from Asia or America – prepared to offer a king's ransom to prise you away from these parts.

One thing is for certain. You will find nowhere else where you are loved, adored and cherished as much as you are here.

You must have heard the fans on Sunday. It was impossible not to. The chants of "Cambiasso, we want you to stay" are still reverberating around the four corners of the King Power Stadium now. And, hopefully, in your ears, too.

But, whatever your decision, on behalf of every single Leicester fan, thank you. It's been a blast.

Yours sincerely,

James.

How patronising! What an embarrassing letter! Basically he new jack **** about Cambiasso before he came! Anyone who'd have done the tiniest bit of research will have known that

A - Quite a few Inter fans were gutted to see him go and Nigel would never have signed him if he thought he wasn't up to the job.

B - It's just never been in Cambiasso's make up/personality to be the kind of guy who'd do it for the money.

The only thing this letter does is highlight the authors lack of knowledge and common sense. I hope Cambiasso doesn't think all fans questioned him at the start.

Also there's absolutely no reason to give personal thanks in an open letter. The Mercury are complete ****** for printing this too.

Pure cringe. Can't really believe what I'm reading.

I get that reporters on local papers need to support teams – show solidarity to the cause.

But lines should be drawn at not embarrassing yourself and the brotherhood of scribes by publishing asinine drivel like that. Why nobody prevented that from being printed I don't know.

He is a young lad reporting and unfortunately with this one he has misjudged it big time. Hopefully he will learn from this and not be so ****ing soggy in future.

Christ's sake... This letter epitomises what I've been talking about all season.

It's cringeworthy....

Do people REALLY get this wound up by a footballer?

Let's face it. He won't have a clue what it's about apart from the words Leicester city and his name.

Or he will google translate it and will think the guy who wrote is trying to marry him.

Which, turned on its head, is exactly my point..

It's quite bizarre.
