Martin O'Neill

He spent more than Wenger around that time easily

So you're saying if you put Wenger in charge or Villa at that time and gave him the budget O'Neill had, and had O'Neill managing Arsenal with the squad they already had in place, the positions would of been reversed? Absolute lunacy to think getting Villa finishing 6th was poor.

I find some people's views on MON on here surprising.

He'd hardly be replacing a tactical genius, so for me the 'he doesn't know the league argument' is a non starter.

I also don't buy the non-stop workman like application of his team.  We were often labelled 'boring, boring Leicester' under his management but the team he left us with was a delight to watch.  We played some great football.  Boring, boring Leicester was sang many times under sarcastic tones from the stand.

I'd welcome MON back here and anyone less accustomed to the idea either wasn't old enough to experience the late 90s or is a fool.

Enough said.

I said nothing of the sort, why twist what I've said? He asked who he spent more than in the top 4, I gave him someone. Simple.

He most probably did.  But I'd wager that before O'Neill started spending money Wenger had a considerly better side to begin with.

End of the day, if O'Neill spent 120 million whilst at Villa and got 6th, 6th, 6th in a row, thats still probably about as good as it was going to get.

What? it's all about what the squad's are before you spend a load of cash on a load of tat these days?

You think he did a bad job at Villa? You think he should of broken in to the top 4 given the money spent?

I don't think he did a bad job there, but I don't think it can be considered a fantastic achievement.

It is very likely to happen, yes.

I'm at the conclusion now that the bookies, the news & anyone else who claims that they are 'ITK' actually know fvck all!

A statement saying 'Leicester are interested in O'Neill' from some idiot at sky is what we are going off!! Who told Rob Dorsett of this interest before they told Ireland?

Have you thought, sky control sports news and they are also one of biggest sports betting companies out there now.

Let's throw loads of random names out in the news and claim to be 'ITK' get loads of people betting on what they know is bollocks! It's a win for them.

It would be interesting to see how much they could change peoples betting with what they tell us. You have to take anything SSN say with a pinch of salt. They're the Daily Star of TV.

You stared all this off by stating that O'Neill didn't do a good job at Villa because he spent 120 million and didn't break into the top 4.  All I'm saying is is that 120 million doesn't and won't break you into the top 4 going from where Villa started when he signed.  He may have spent more money than Wenger in that time period I can't be bothered to check but Villa didn't have a side as good as Arsenal when MON took over did he?

My Villa supporting mate doesn't talk too highly of MON either. Mainly talks of the money spent and him not rotating the team enough near the back end of a certain season which apparently cost them a place in the top 4. Are all Villa fans fvcking idiots?

I never said that, i said it cannot be lauded as an "extremely impressive achievement" I think he did an alright job considering the circumstances of when he arrived and with hindsight . 120 Million is a perfectly suffice warchest over the years to get into those top 4 positions, at that time anyway. Wenger had the better squad, no question but ultimately that's what the 120 Million is for, to change that and he failed to do that a lot of the money was spent on the likes of Nigel Reo Coker fgs.

What people are forgetting here is O'Neill did all his work with Leicester in the top league after getting us up. Then getting us consolidated in the premier league and winning us cups as well with not alot of money either, that's why he's a legend.

How long did it take Pearson to get us up into the premier league and he had decent backing with that as well. And we spent a good part of the season sat at the bottom playing dog shit football to boot.

But it is an impressive achievement thats the thing.

Look at it this way.  Pick any manager now for Leicester, your choice.  And over the next 3 seasons this said manager spends 150 million on players (up from the 120 O'neill spent to allow for inflation and all that).

If Leicester finished 6th, 6th and 6th, how would you feel as a fan?  Would you be annoyed you didn't finish higher, really?

But in fairness... Pearson got us from league 1, to the play offs, sacked, to the play offs, promoted, 14th place finish.

Can't moan at that.

Anyone still got their "Don't go Martin" signs from when he almost joined Leeds? If we appoint him, we should do a big tifo spelling that out, for old times sake
