Jace Posted 10 July 2015 Posted 10 July 2015 I have to admit if this pulls off it will certainly help take away some of the pain and hurt of Pearson being sacked alright
Jon the Hat Posted 10 July 2015 Posted 10 July 2015 It would certainly be from the sublime to the ridiculous if O'Neill replaced Pearson. It was clear to some of us he was a busted flush when he arrived at The SOL, so to give him the job now at The KP would be inexcusable. Having said which he would, of course, start off with a handsome victory on the opening day against Sunderland, but it would be downhill after that. He would undo so much of the good Nigel Pearson has done in the last few years. He was crap for you, but who isn't?
Bob Weasel Fox Posted 10 July 2015 Posted 10 July 2015 Legend - welcome home That was an emotional gameRemember it well
yorksfox Posted 10 July 2015 Posted 10 July 2015 Despite the Great Escape we are perhaps not that attractive a proposition yet. It would be a coup to get MON to return, is there anyone better out there? Villa fans that don't rate Top Six finishes should reflect on his successors a little more! All managers make the odd poor signing, MON included, but he clearly ticks more boxes than anyone else out there.
Grewks Posted 10 July 2015 Posted 10 July 2015 Only adds fuel to the fire that the thai's are pretty clueless about the game.

Much more attractive than the ROI job is right now and a great solution for their current money situation
ROKERITE Posted 10 July 2015 Posted 10 July 2015 After his 6th place finishes with Aston Villa? Oh yes, it's a matter of realising when a man has passed that point when he's not the manager he was. Sadly, though we hoped he was still the MO'N we'd all admired with you and Celtic, some of us feared he was no longer anything like the same manager. Added to which was the serious ill-health of his wife (meaning he naturally couldn't give the dedication to his job that was needed) and the retirement of his right-hand man John Robertson. The man I would like, were I a Leicester City supporter, is Sean Dyche; but I note the suggestion seems as unpopular on here as it was on RTG when some of us were arguing his case for the Sunderland job before Advocat's change of mind. I can't and couldn't understand the negativity about Dyche. I think he's done very well at Watford and Burnley. I fear Sunderland and Leicester City supporters could regret not making the move for Dyche, a year or two from now.

ARM1968 Posted 10 July 2015 Posted 10 July 2015 They probably realise how angry we all are and that the appointment of MON might placate us ;-). In all honesty I have mixed feelings, but he's better than most of the dross linked to us.
desertfox2 Posted 10 July 2015 Posted 10 July 2015 Hmm my boycott of Thai duty free could be coming to an end..... MON back and a duty free case of Tiger, things are looking up!
biggs Posted 10 July 2015 Posted 10 July 2015 Not reading all 25 pages but for me this is a better appointment than some of the names it appeared might be coming our way. I'd be happy to say welcome back
EGBFitness Posted 10 July 2015 Posted 10 July 2015 I don't understand the negativity towards MON coming back. Yes he is a legend here and would be a shame to tarnish that reputation BUT what if that legacy doesn't get tarnished and the club moves forward? Nige came back and was a popular figure at the club but that hasn't been tarnished. There's plenty of managers who have returned to clubs they have had success with and haven't ruined that reputation. Highly likely he will want to work with a younger coach, hopefully and doubt it would be Keane (this he would take Ireland job) but could this pave the way for Cambiasso role? He doesn't jump around like he used too- who cares? Just cause you have an animated manager on the sideline doesn't mean you will get more points. Wenger, Ferguson 2 examples who have/had got less animated during their career. Been out the premier league for few years- so had mourinho but I'm sure Chelsea wasn't bothered! He has still been active manager who would be keeping very close eye on premier league whilst manager of Ireland so it's not like he doesn't know how premier league football is played! Pearson had never managed in the premier league before this season. Getting MON back we have a manager that will build on what we already have at Leicester. I think he still has a lot of respect for the club and wouldn't come in and ruin what we have built so far. I don't think the times have been right before in the past when we were championship etc and it was more of a desperate hope he would return. Ireland job has very little prospect for him, he is with an average ageing national team ranked 30/40's in Fifa rankings with little prospect of achieving much. IF he returns to LCFC I think he will be picking up from where he left of but with more potential. He has a world class set up in terms of stadium, training facilities and quality squad to build on. We have ambitions of Europe in year or 2 where he already took us too and with bigger budget to play with. A few years ago he was linked to England job and was even earmarked for Man Utd job for when Fergie left etc, he has probably over achieved everywhere he has been par Sunderland but because of that short stay record people don't want him here!? We will have a manager we can fully trust and will get the place buzzing again, what else does city fans want!!??
CosbehFox Posted 10 July 2015 Posted 10 July 2015 A legend for us but sadly a step back. He's lost his zest for it. He's not the same bloke he was. He lost it when Robertson decided not to carry on. Anyone think Pearson is a pain behind the scenes, this fella was as well. It's an ill judged attempt at appeasing fans with no real forward thinking.
Callabinho Posted 10 July 2015 Posted 10 July 2015 Martin O'Neill sides on the day can match any side in this division. I'd welcome him back.
Bob Weasel Fox Posted 10 July 2015 Posted 10 July 2015 O'God would still be in God in my eyes even if things don't go as well this time Fingers crossed though if he is the replacement I wish him well and hope he can replicate the old O'Neill Magic

Wymsey Posted 10 July 2015 Posted 10 July 2015 Who would you suggest is a step forward then? Dave Jones (he's from Cardiff).
Thracian Posted 10 July 2015 Posted 10 July 2015 Not the guy I'd choose. Like many others I don't think he's adapted that well to the modern game, some of his drive seems to have disappeared and he's not given himself that kind of challenges necessary to keep his batteries charged. What he did for Leicester is beyond dispute and there were so many magic moments. But it was with a completely different style of team to the one we have now. Surely there must be someone exciting out there...and who's willing to come here.
Wymsey Posted 10 July 2015 Posted 10 July 2015 I hope he comes here with 'open arms' support; if we didn't have a spell under him like we did, we wouldn't be classed as a club that had European taste and cup winners.
ROKERITE Posted 10 July 2015 Posted 10 July 2015 You could always replace him with Paolo Di Canio, so he can pull your chestnuts out of the fire as he did ours when O'Neill had us crashing into The Championship. Now Paolo would be an exciting choice, my favourite Sunderland Manager in the 53 years I've followed the club, whose sacking remains one of the blackest moments for me as a Sunderland supporter.
Leicesterpool Posted 10 July 2015 Posted 10 July 2015 I hope he comes here with 'open arms' support; if we didn't have a spell under him like we did, we wouldn't be classed as a club that had European taste and cup winners. Without doubt I can imagine it'll takeaway some of that negativity surrounding the club following the exit of Pearson. The return of the special one will excite many. Funny it'll be twenty years since he first joined the club.
CosbehFox Posted 10 July 2015 Posted 10 July 2015 Who would you suggest is a step forward then? I want a modern, forward thinking coach receptive to the likes of sports science and statistically aided scouting. The Guingamp fella looks excellent on paper. Big Sam fits the bill and regardless of media speculation, I'm disappointed not have heard about contact. Aitor Karanka at Boro is a learning manager who has a great contacts book. Doesn't mind input from scouting team judging from some signings too. I am even coming around to Lennon as I see him as someone who we could adapt into who we want. Cocu was mentioned but that maybe overly ambitious. Montella and Thomas Schaaf both have experience of managing top flights recently. Schaaf in particular did pretty well in similar circumstances with Frankfurt.
biggs Posted 10 July 2015 Posted 10 July 2015 Quit worrying about his 'legend status' This is a new era and the man was arguably our best manager so I'm thinking he may well be again. He knows the premier league, he knows the fans and he'll have something to prove. I like the positive signs going in.
Deucalion Posted 10 July 2015 Posted 10 July 2015 I always felt he left us as unfinished. Let's hope, like with Pearson, he can finish what he started all those years ago. FA Cup anyone ???
