Martin O'Neill

Dog shit gets bad press. I once stepped on some and brought it inside onto the carpets and it smelt fantastic.

So is MON the dog shit or did you just want to share your feelings with the group? lol

But in fairness... Pearson got us from league 1, to the play offs, sacked, to the play offs, promoted, 14th place finish.

Can't moan at that.

Pearson did well but he's gone, poster's on here seem to be turning there nose up to O'Neill which I find a bit strange. If you look at some of the realistic candidates he's by far the best one.

But it is an impressive achievement thats the thing.

Look at it this way.  Pick any manager now for Leicester, your choice.  And over the next 3 seasons this said manager spends 150 million on players (up from the 120 O'neill spent to allow for inflation and all that).

If Leicester finished 6th, 6th and 6th, how would you feel as a fan?  Would you be annoyed you didn't finish higher, really?

They're not comparable scenarios are they? Villa had been more than an established club at this point, were flirting with the title in the 90s. We've just returned to the prem after our longest absence, of course I'd take that. Although, after the 3rd 6th place, you'd have to ponder on whether we were actually going to go forward as a club or remain here

Thanks Eric. How are the seagulls doing?

He's probably talking about what MoN did at sunderland for one year is what people are remembering him for...

How does what Villa did in the 90's have anything to do with the dogshit squad they had that was flirting with relegation every year when Martin got there lol?

Merely emphasising that they were a firmly established top club in the premier league at that point and wasn't that long ago that they were up there, we're going into our second season.

Well this is perhaps where we differ in opinion.  2 of the 4 seasons before O'neill took over they finished just two places outside the dropzone and their highest position in 4 years before O'neill was 10th.  So to me they might have been "established" as it were, but they certainly weren't great.  They were an also ran, like every other bottom half team.

Established doesn't really mean anything if you just do enough to stay in the league like Villa had done (and now, after O'neill, continue to do so).

Like I said, from where they were before him, to spend 120 million over what..3 seasons, 4?  and to have three lots of 6th placed finishes is the best you can do.  To make the next step up, even back then is a different world of finances, just like it is now.

Glad the balance is being redressed. The afternoon anti-Martin Pearson fans/kids were spouting heresy. Bring on the Second Coming!

If O'Neill spent £120-£160 million over 3 years and we were knocking on the top 6 or top 4 door we'd all be ecstatic.

Is he a spent force?

Time will tell I guess but I'd rather MON than a number of the other options to be fair.

Umm what makes you think there's any correlation between people who are positive about Pearson and negative about this? As far as I can tell (and I haven't read the last few pages) lcfcsnow has been most negative about this and he's always been anti-Pearson.

maybe he is just anti Leicester

Anyone think MON could take us to the next level? i.e top 10 in the prem, getting into Europe, winning a cup or two he has done it once before can he do it again? Here is hoping!

So Martin O Neill spent £120 million and made Villa an established top 6 Premier League team and some think that is a bad thing? I say more reason to get him back

My Villa supporting mate doesn't talk too highly of MON either. Mainly talks of the money spent and him not rotating the team enough near the back end of a certain season which apparently cost them a place in the top 4. Are all Villa fans fvcking idiots?

If he likes to spend money then he has the right owners here.....

Some of his acheivements are remarkable.  If you take Sunderland out of his record then Leicester actually had the lowest win rate on his record.  Aside from what he did with us, he took Celtic from finishing 21 points behind Rangers one year to winning the Treble the next.  Let's not forget he took Celtic to the Uefa Cup final too, losing to Mourinho's Porto.  His acheivements at Villa were great too.

I do want him but I don't at the same time, it's a bit weird.  I don't want to risk tarnishing the golden age we had under him last time.

That said, if he had never been our manager, I would think that he would be a solid candidate for us now.

Having been brought up as a City fan firstly under Little, then MON I have to admit I love O'Neil.

Similar I guess to how some of our younger fans respect Pearson.

I loved his energy, his passion and his signings.

He's older and not the manager he once was I suspect.

But with all the names mentioned, this is the one that excites me the most. I'd love to see the great man back at City.

One thing I would say..IF the Thais are wanting a 'yes man', a puppet so to speak, MON is NOT that. He can be a fiery bloke and don't expect all media plesantry with him. He is a pretty direct talker and says it how he sees it.

For the first time in weeks, I'm excited at this prospect.

Mate I thought you were older than that!

If he was appointed now and we were relegated next season it would not tarnish any opinion I have of him or what he has achieved before

Don't want to spoil the memories, incredible man manager so I expect him to keep the confidence high, would like to see someone else doing the coaching. Cambiasso?

Definitely has the owners who would give him the money to attain that a little bit quicker than what he achived it before.... He also would inherit a MUCH better squad. Pearson has left him the nucleus of a fantastic set up so i cant help but think he'd be pretty much walking into something that would be very difficult for him to mess up.....

Reminds me of those dream job offers i used to get on football manager   :D

To be fair though i might be tempted to get him in a headlock and ask him what in Gods name went wrong?!?!?

True mate, MON probably feels like he has been in a coma for long period of time, with the changes at City since he left.

I think this whole episode has and is damaging our progress for the coming season. My only expectation of a manager this season is to keep us up again.
