Martin O'Neill

I want a modern, forward thinking coach receptive to the likes of sports science and statistically aided scouting.

The Guingamp fella looks excellent on paper.

Big Sam fits the bill and regardless of media speculation, I'm disappointed not have heard about contact.

Aitor Karanka at Boro is a learning manager who has a great contacts book. Doesn't mind input from scouting team judging from some signings too.

I am even coming around to Lennon as I see him as someone who we could adapt into who we want.

Cocu was mentioned but that maybe overly ambitious.

Montella and Thomas Schaaf both have experience of managing top flights recently. Schaaf in particular did pretty well in similar circumstances with Frankfurt.

Just to clarify I have read this correctly you'd pick Sam Allardyce over Martin O' Neill?

Yeh over the past five years Big Sam has performed better.

O'Neill has managed to get Ireland ranked lower than their Northern counterparts and put Sunderland right in deep stuff. I just looked his last signings at Sunderland :- Danny Graham, Kader Mangane and Alfred N'Diaye (£3.8 million) Bit of a mixed bag that season Fletecher and Johnson in but also Saha, Cuellar and McFadden.

By comparison Big Sam's last five signings at West Ham were Valencia, Jenkinson, Sakho, Song and Amalfitno. Though there was Nene too.

Both similar clubs. Both similar budgets.

i have no reservations about the choice APART from him being a legend here.

nah no sentiment - just a good choice

Have to agree with you Baggers

Although I hope it's not my rose tinted spectacles talking I mean looking errrm you know what I mean lol

Nope his record is still quality... Bar one bad run and got the sack for it, wasn't given a chance

Most people are saying he'd be good with Walsh and Shakespeare, there's no guaranteeing that'd happen, I've not got the rose tinted specs on when it comes to O'Neill because I wasn't old enough to remember but he's underwhelming for me because he's not particularly progressive, apparently he doesn't use prozone, he's not interested in coaching and his transfer business is sketchy. I appreciate he's a brilliant motivator but I don't feel that's enough anymore.

One positive though is that there'll be some continuity with the effort and attitude of the players but I get the feeling we'll lose some of the flair and the swagger.

To be honest I am already resigned to disappointment as the 'panel of 5' appear to have about as much football knowledge as most of the blokes in the local pub around the corner from my house.

Love him or hate him, there is no question he is. a good manager. If he came here, he would have money at his disposal, which is something he did not have at Burnley, last season.

I wouldn't be unhappy if he came here, although not my first choice.

If he doesn't come now, I'll be so gutted.  As per many others on here, this is the first time I've felt really excited about the new Manager since the shock of NP departing.

Cannot believe some of the negativity against him.  Let's just give it a go and see what happens - those of us around in the MON days can never have those memories tarnished.  Who knows, maybe they'll be even better?

Come on Martin - time to come home.

If this is true then who was today's interview with? Ranieri?

I'd guess at di matteo
