I've got some beautiful watches and have loved collecting them over many many years ...   but I have to say that at the moment all I wear is my titanium iwatch 5 with it's soft magnetic leather strap ...  its brilliant !   Can make calls without the phone, use a compass when out walking and its soooo light.   And ...   it is a genuine thing of beauty and technical achievement.

I’ve got a Tag (not F1) and wear it every day. Great watch, not flashy and not expensive enough for someone to mug you for it. A good all rounder

Where did you buy yours from? Ive had a look online and Beaverbrooks have some nice ones. Just always find watch shops quite unwelcoming with 4 or 5 blokes stood around in suits with no customers in the shop 😂

You tried Pragnell?  Last time I went in, 9 months or so ago, I had a chat with them about watches and they had loads of Tag watches in.  Since they moved shops, the floor is nicely split so you do get some privacy and 1 on 1 service.

Best cheaper ‘luxury’ watch brands? Longines, Tudor etc?

I like Hamilton and Longines. Seiko are also producing some nice stuff in their Presage range.

I've also bought a couple of watches from a company called Undone - the watches are totally customisable, you can pick what strap, case, hands, dial, buckle etc. you want.

Have a grand seiko, best watch I own. The detail and watch face is stunning

Longines are brilliant for the £1-3k price point I don’t think there is better. The master collection is outstanding value (chrono moon phase in particular), Seiko or Seiko heritage collection, Tudor, Raymond Weil are making some nice pieces now and have massively improved - especially the small seconds range.

Christopher Ward make really solid watches (UK brand) can’t go wrong with one of their divers

sinn - less well known German brand make solid watches for 1-2k

Under the 3k mark

Mido Ocean Star is worth a look. I’m really tempted to get one, great watch and less than £1k

These new Tag Heuer Connected Calibre E5 look nice. A bit steep for my liking. Are they worth the price, how is the functionality?

Just seen they work well with iPhones.

Got this a few weeks back when I was in Italy. Love it and saved about £220 on tax.

Some very decent designs available but most are only available with auto/mechanical movements. I've got my Dad's watch but couldn't wear it as a daily because of all that winding and resetting the time that it needs. Why would you want to do that when quartz provides accuracy and always ready to go? Is anyone really that interested in what's going on inside? Add this to the servicing costs which makes some automatics not cost effective and almost disposable. A quartz will last a lifetime with periodic battery changes (or none if it's light powered). My wife has a Citizen eco-drive that hasn't missed a beat in 17 years!

I've got a Bulova Jet Star with the Precisionist movement. Super accurate with a sweeping second hand that beats any automatic. Can't recommend it enough.

Bought a San Martin off AliExpress last year as a beater. 9015 Miyota mechanism, I'm having a very difficult time regulating it to keep it losing minutes a day. It was -/+30 seconds a day before I tried to tinker it myself, but after multiple goes it's running 4 or so minutes a day fast, can't get a grip of it.

Point of it was a nice cheap mech I could bash about and don't fancy paying loads to get it sorted. Nice looking thing though - SN0150

Is watchmaking a hobby for you? I could never wear a watch that loses or gains that much in a day. Never know what the time is! Even the 'luxury' auto brands aren't accurate.

My work/daily is a GW-M5610U square G-Shock. I just wanted something bang for buck mechanical to call on for smarter occasions.

That's about the limit of my arsedness on watches. Unless it's an investment purchase, it's very much a mean to an end. I just know you can tighten mechanical watches up and that this is a half decent movement so thought making it more accurate & useful would make me want to wear it more.

G-Shock just works. It's solar so never have to charge it, it receives a signal which resets its time every single day. It has a stopwatch, a timer, a light. Literally just a tool..... but it's not formal or showy. The fact this mechanical one loses so much time now I cba wearing it or tinkering, but know a pro watchmaker would probably want half the value of it just to hone it down to a 20 second +/- daily.

there are two types of people who buy watches, some that want an expensive piece on their wrist to show it off and people who are interested in the precision of Horology.

citizen eco drive are great watches

I have a grand seiko that has a sweeping minute hand - It utilizes a traditional mainspring to generate power, but replaces the standard mechanical escapement with an electro-magnetic "tri-synchro regulator" controlled by a quartz crystal

i have 5 watches and the more I collect the less I wear them so will only buy another if I sell. I will always wear one for a few weeks then rotate
